Scents for pregnancy? Not recommended by the Lab

Congrats to you all! May all of you have safe, blissful pregnancies! I found that I had a lot less trouble with BPAL than I did with other perfumes during my last pregnancy. That link is a great one for questions pertaining to BPAL and pg! I swear, we should have a preggers/nursing mom thread somewhere here. Or, do we? If we do, someone please let me know, cuz I'd love to chit chat! There sure does seem to be a lot of us!

    Wings of Azrael

I have been avoiding this one like the plague because, while I love violets, any flower with lily as part of the name does not really work for me. I got it as a freebie from the lab. Last night, I finally decided to put it on. I smelled the oil and smelled a LOT of juniper. My first reaction was to put it back, but something forced me to put it on. On: WOW! Talk about a scent morphing. This is actually a very pretty, soft woody floral on me. I get violets, but not bright screaming violets, more of a pastel rendition of a violet. Very soft, not watery, more "dreamy" and, for some reason, comforting. Not really my style, but I will keep the imp. Definitely for those who love soft, sweet florals. E.T.A. This scent has really grown on me and I want a bottle for winter.

    Czernobog

Wow, this is a heavy scent. Just a drop on my wrist and I could smell it for hours. This scent immediately started off a deep, sticky pine. Rather like the sap you will find on pine lumber. Then, the animalistic musky side of this fragrance really began to bloom. Immediately upon smelling this scent in its full glory, I thought of a black wolf watching from a thick, pine forest on a chilly night. I thought this might be what his fur smelled like. Over all, a very strong, sexy predominantly male fragrance. I might wear this to a club when I am in ball-buster mode.

    BPAL and pregnancy

Yes, Dana O Shee. Dahling, it smells just like a sweet little babe. I'll bet Milk Moon would be wonderful. I missed it. I would try other oils carefully in little teeny dabs to see if they go wonky, irritate your skin or sinuses or upset your delicate tummy. I know in this thread we discussed oils which may be harmful. I seem to recall Pain being a blend which may not be safe. Congrats on your pregnancy! May it be blessed!

    Springtime scents

Phantom Queen has a very sweet-green-clean smell to me, reminds me of the trees in late spring, when they are just beginning to look alive again. I could see one wearing Morgause as a spring night-time scent, it's just "cool" enough to be great for spring. But, I'm going to be wearing A LOT of Bathsheba and Dana O'Shee. I really prefer (especially when it warms up a bit) to wear things that stick close to the skin. Both of these are so warm and light and don't overwhelm.

    'Second Skin' Scents

Great order! I just want to add that although it's a bit "watery", and I usually HATE watery scents, Water of Notre Dame is very calming, soft and has this slightly salty vibe to it that makes it mesh really well with the skin! It's absosmurfly wonderful!! I can't wait to hear your verdict and what you decide on.
  7. I'm about to become a mom again for the third time and I would also highly recommend Dana O'Shee (I'll be taking an imp with me to the hospital) due to the lack of floral abundance as well as the fact that it is light and very sweet. Also, the milky-honey-grainey smell is very comforting and stays close to the skin . I would be very careful of gifting floral scents as newborn babes can have allergies (esp if exclusively formula fed) that mom doesn't show sign of, as they have not had time to build up their immunities. I've read that quite a few people on the forum have allergies to roses. Good luck, and let us know what you decide!

    'Second Skin' Scents

Sounds like you've got a good selection going. Good luck and let us know how it goes for ya! BTW, anyone who has tried Eos might be able to comment on whether or not it's what you're looking for, but the site description goes as follows... EOS ~ The Rising Sun. She is Ostara, Easter, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of fertility and the dawn. She is a protector and friend to all children. Her scent is that of softly glowing skin, jasmine, buttercup and honeysuckle. Might be something worth trying due to the "softly glowing skin" in the description...

    'Second Skin' Scents

I got a gimp of Dirty in my last order and it's very clean sheets drying on the clothesline on a sunny day on me. It reminded me of pressing my face against sheets fresh from washing hung to dry on the line during the summer. This was a very close to the skin kind of scent, where it took my hubby hugging me to notice it. Very unobtrusive and very unfoody. Bathsheba is my newest fave, and I have to say it is very lush and pretty, but it retains an innocence that's very refreshing. I like it as an everyday, feel pretty kind of scent. It doesn't have tons of throw on me so it does rather just melt into my skin. It does have a good ammount of sweetness due to the plum, but it's balanced out by the musk and spicey carnation. Blood Kiss is not at all a very "second skin" scent for me as it has a lot of throw when I wear it. Also, this has a very sweet cherry/vanilla smell to it on me for a while. Very smokey and wicked, though. I love it to death! Dracul has a very "second skin" affect on my hubby. Very sexy and dark. I don't know if you would be comfortable with it as it is rather manly, though it is gender neutral. The listed notes are: black musk, tobacco, fir, balsam of peru, cumin, bitter clove, crushed mint, and orange blossom. It's intoxicating. I wanted to just lay there and smell his neck for hours. If I were feeling froggy, I might try it for myself, but he's hoarding his imp of this precious until his 10mL comes in.
  10. I'm really loving Bathsheba right now and I'm wondering how well it will layer with Potion...any opinion? I'm trying to find a good, light lotion that will layer well with it! Thanks! Bathsheba=Plum, Carnation and Musk.

    'red' scents

No, I agree. Blood Kiss is very smoky, deep red. Blood Rose, although it didn't really agree with me, is a very red red scent.

    Blood Rose

This is very close to Persephone on me, closer than I would have liked. For some reason, this turned very sweet, wet rosey on me and it's just not working with my current chemistry. I'll probably give this another go another time when my hormones aren't as whacky, but for now it's just too too wet and rosey for me. However, I can see what many people say about Beth's abilities with rose and other floral scents. So far, her rose scents are truely rosey and not the "fabricated" or "artificial" scents usually released by perfumers, these are the real deal and Blood Rose is no exception. It's beautiful, it's just not working for me right now. Tried this again post-partum and I am afraid it is still too wet and sweet for me. The wine in this is more like a sweet sangria than a bordeaux. The dragon's blood does not really come out until the end, although it does add a bit of a sweet, acrid note throughout. I think I am going to just take a break from the roseys and stick with the spicey-sweet scents. Bye blood rose, I wish I could have gotten to know you better. But, it's not you, it's me...

    BPAL and pregnancy

Oh yes, believe me. I've had some strange experiences with that. Some florals (non-BPAL) with NO rose in them at all have suddenly turned rose on me, LOL! So, that is something to think about, for sure.

    BPAL and pregnancy

Being PG for the third time myself, I would have to agree with watching the pennyroyal and other, possibly harmful, EO's during pg. It's just best for the mom's peace of mind, if nothing else. I would like to add when buying scented products for a pg woman, it's best to find out if she has any scent-induced nausea/stomach upset. It's fairly common, I had it at some point with all my pregnancies. Lavender, in large doses will cause me to lose my lunch everytime. Don't know why, but it does. Also, when pg, it's common for women to develop temporary skin sensitivity and have reactions to things one doesn't usually have reactions to while not pg.

    Carnal

I'm afraid this didn't really work for me. I've found out now that while I lerve figgy goodness, I need it to be combined with other, non-fruity scents to work for me. In the imp: Very bright orange scent. A bit of the earthy fig, but not too much. On: Wet, this is very orange-y. It's a ripe, full, juicy orange smell. Not at all Orange Cleaner or synthetic. Very nice and juicy. Before it was dry, the fig came out in all it's figgyness. This was a very earthy, juicy fig. Very Very sweet and earthy. Overall, not my cup of tea, but I'm sure those who are looking for a very earthy, sweet, fruity oil will LOVE this.

    Desdemona

This scent didn't work for me. It's got a green, floral vibe to it, but there's also something that seems almost aquatic (probably lily?). It's very pretty and fresh, but it's just not me. I also cannot really pick out any one scent, even the carnation is really well blended into the other notes. This would be great for those who like very fresh, clean florals.
  17. As far as sexy scents go, so far the hubby really really loves Morgause, Blood Kiss and his big fave is Bathsheba. I'm going to say that Bathsheba and Morgause make me feel the most "feminine" and sexy. Blood Kiss is more of a "attack your SO on the couch and make him/her beg for mercy" scent.

    Dracul

"Named in honor of Vlad III, Tepes, of the Order of the Dragon. Black musk, tobacco, fir, balsam of peru, cumin, bitter clove, crushed mint, and orange blossom. (Gender neutral)" My hubby has fallen in love again with a BPAL and this one is his new fave. I leaned into him when he came home last night and took a big whiff (love smelling my man when he comes home from work) and I know why. This scent is very masculine and sexy in a very dark, timeless way. It's a rather ferocious scent that shouldn't be worn by those not willing to embrace the dark, masculine side of their personality. The fir and the musk dominate this scent on my husband, but they are tempered by the clove, mint and sweetness of the orange blossoms. I got just the slightest hint of tobacco, but the cumin was totally lost on me (not such a bad thing b/c I don't necessarily love the scent of cumin.) Overall, I really love this scent. Just right for curling up in front of the fire during winter. Hubby adores it.

    Bathsheba

Alright, I'm so mad at myself for not buying this one unsniffed, but ah well, I have so many imps to try hopefully, that will make the time pass quickly. First impression: Huh, sweet roses and spice. I was about to put this one back for a day when I was in a rosey mood. Went to the website, no roses, must be my funky nose. Second impression...YOWSA! Carnations abloom, for some reason I'm seeing pink ones, golden delicious musk and just the slightest bit of a dark purple sweetness from the plum. Lovely, in a very sensual (not sexual) way. For some reason, I am seeing a woman dancing provocatively in front of a bonfire at sunset. Final thoughts....This is a very "sunset" type fragrance. You get the pink from the carnation, the golden from the Arabian musk and the purple from the plum. My husband enjoyed this on me immensely. Don't get me wrong, that's just for color scheme. This is very much an "anytime" fragrance, one to put on when you want to feel sexy and golden. Male reaction was VERY favorable for those who want to know. One side note, however, I can't see this being a "gender neutral" fragrance, as described, but perhaps that's just me...

    Dorian

I told my husband we should have ordered the 5ml or even a 10ml right of the bat of this... Overall: This is a very playful, asexual scent. Very hedonistic with a bit of a bite. In the imp: Lemon drops. Very sweet, almost scared me off at first.. On me wet: Lemon and vanilla with a slight creamy sweetness to it. On me drydown: Ah...there's the tea and the fougere. The lemon and vanilla-sugar go into a creamy state and the acridity of the tea tempers it nicely. The fougere is there, in the background and keeps this light and not overly foody. This is AMAZING. The musks come out last and give it just the right ammount of a feral edge. On hubby, actually, it was just like me, but better. Ah, this is something all men should own because it is sexy in such an underhanded, nonchalant way. The musks also seemed to come out more with him. Nice staying power on both of us as well. I can't help but think of Dorian as Alice's older, very naughty brother. You know, the one all the girls pined for and parents adored. The man who could break a thousand hearts, but managed to stay on good terms with all of them...Ah Dorian, you are a bad bad boy!

    Dana O'Shee

Ah...this has got to be one of the most comforting scents I've tried in a long time. Sweet, yet not really foody...green, but not verdant. This was perfect for snuggling up after being sick sick sick. Very much like a yummy bowl of steel-cut oats with cream and honey. First impression: sticky sweet. Not too sure about this, as I haven't had the best of luck with the sweeter bpals. However, better to give it a chance, eh? Wet: honey. Pure, sticky sweet honey. Very sweet and comforting, but not at all overpowering. Nice sweet scent. Not sure if this is me or not. Drydown: Ah...there's the grains. This was what made this scent really work, imho. The grains, and there's something else...almost slightly creamy/milky, but not vanilla. Oh, this was very nice for a day of recouperation. Overall: Don't know if I want a large bottle, but I'll finish the imp.

Figs and Fig Scents - alone and in combos

I have only tried Carnal from that list and I have to say it's very figgy. The orange is still there, but, on me, Carnal is very very figgy.

    Nine Mysteries

My nose is a bit off due to allergies, but this actually helped a bit clearing my sinuses up. The mint is very strong in this one. At first sniff and wet, this oil reminds me of Peppermint stick ice cream. Cold, and very sweet. Something begins to peek out once on the skin, however. A floral of some sort. I'm smelling violets. This is a rather pleasant surprise. Dry: the peppermint fades into the background and this opens up into a nice, violet-y floral. I still detect a note of sweet here, like a sugary smell. Perhaps this is the coconut people were talking about, but I'm getting more vanilla or brown sugar. Something a bit...dark-sweet. Maybe it's a musk note mixing with a sweet, darkening it up a bit. 2 hrs later...this scent has morphed into a soapy-clean smell with a hint of mint. It's a strange morph, much like WoND, only this was even more "clean". Not expected, but ah well, it was nice for a bit. Don't think I'll be purchasing a bottle, but I'll try the imp again once I'm feeling better.
  24. I would like to second Port au Prince. It's rather androgynous, though, almost slightly masculine. Very spicey. The Rum comes on really strong, but after that it's all sweet clove and the rest all go into the background for me to sweeten and broaden the clove. Might be my chemistry, but it's purdy sexay.

Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils

Oh no, not at all. I, for one, am sorry if I came off that way!! I think it's like Scylla said: we're a bit on the defensive b/c we lerve our BPAL and we want to protect the people who spend so much time, effort and money into making it.
