Puddy Tat!

Today's animal story is that a cat was camped out on the front porch last night when I got home. There are feral cats in the neighborhood that are truly wild, and over the winter we'd put a dish of dry cat food out on the porch to hide them over. Lately, a yellow and white cat has been up on the porch, but vanishes when anyone appears. Until yesterday, when it was just hanging out, meowing and acting like it was at home. This isn't a feral cat, it's a poor house cat that was either abandoned or got out of the house and never made it home. The poor little soul has terribly matted hair and mite-infested ears. It's really skinny and a bit skittish, but it wants to be house kitty so badly! It starts kneading its paws and purring when you talk to it, and if it sees you through the window, it meows at you. It will let you pet it if you sit with it long enough and it comes to trust you. It's never hissed or clawed once; it's a sweetheart.

What to do? I can not let it in the house very easily, for Mugzy and Ella Bean would try to eat it. Mugzy has apparently declared cats to be his mortal enemies. I could get it inside and lock it in a basement room, but I think it needs veterinary assistance, because it lists around a little bit when it walks. I wonder if it wasn't hit by a car or injured in some manner. All the feline shelters are full, but I can't let this poor thing sit around much longer. I may have to use canned cat food to lure it into a small dog carrier and get it to the vet. I won't take it to the Humane Society, because considering the state of its coat and its tendency to list a little bit, they might euthanize without giving consideration to adoption. This kitty just wants to go home, or to find a new home. The poor, poor baby.

It's bad enough to have lost dog karma and baby bird in distress karma, but now lost kitty karma is following me around. For the time being, I'm calling him/her Puddy, since Tweety Bird has always rocked my world.

Poor thing! ;) I think even taking him to a big shelter where he will likely be euthanized is more humane than leaving him out there. I would like to  and  and perform a zillion other painful tortures upon every a**hole who dumps housepets to fend for themselves.

Tonight it's rather like a little lion guarding the house. Puddy is orange and she's just sprawled out, lounging on the porch. She doesn't have much reason to leave, I'm giving her food and water and there's shelter and a nice breeze on the porch. I am beginning to think the poor thing isn't very well... she just lists around when she stands up to walk. Then she regains her balance and she's OK. It could be no big deal and it could be something more serious. I'm going to take her to an all-feline veterinary and see what they can do for her.

Ugh, that's frustrating. It really doesn't seem like you're in a position to keep the cat with your 2 puppies. You're a kind-hearted person to want to take care of Puddy, and wanting to get him/her to a vet.

If you're ready, try picking Puddy up by the back of the neck -- darkity referred to it as like a Vulcan grip, right above the shoulder blades. It's like when the mom cat carries the kittens around, there's a nerve that literally relaxes the cat when pinched, and you can lower him/her into a carrier easily.

Thank you dawndie, the darkity patented "vulcan grip" is something I remember from watching mommy cats carry around the babies when I was a little kid. It's been so long since I had a cat, that I've forgotten! The poor kitty has simply taken up residence on the porch and is utterly content at this time, but she's visiting the vet on Monday.

Ear mites can do a number on kitty's balance, and even on their personality. It's really weird having things crawling around inside your skull.

I suspect the kitty's listing will go away once the mites are treated.

The poor thing, the inside of one ear is nearly black if you look down into it. I'm hoping you're correct and that's all that is the matter. The other thing we'll do when she's at the vet's is to have them scan for a microchip. It would be great if we'd found someone's pet who ran away and we could get her back home. But I'm not holding my breath on that; I think minilux's initial assessment is probably the case, and she was abandoned. She's feeling pretty happy right now, so we'll see how we can help her even more!
