Tungerine

This is similar to Event Horizon, just as dark, but colder. I think it's also a little less sweet. If Event Horizon is purple, this would be green-blue. It doesn't end up soapy like most aquatics do on me, in fact I think it's more metallic than aquatic, or maybe like cold stone. I wouldn't call it pleasant but it's interesting and evocative and I think I'll need a bottle because I keep reaching for it and have nearly finished the imp.

When I got it a few years ago my initial impression was DEAD LEAVES!!! (damp rotting ones) with a hint of ambergris, and the other notes were barely detectable. I put it away for a while and now it's much improved. All the notes are well balanced, and it's more dry leaves than wet. It reminds me a little of Alecto, but softer and sweeter.

To begin with I smell lime and white musk. I'm not a fan of white musk, but it isn't too strong at this point. After a minute there's coconut, then the lime gives way to lemongrass. It changes fast to begin with! It's bright and effervescent. At this point I can't detect any florals, but a little later it's lime, lemongrass, and subtle white flowers. Thankfully white musk stays in the background. Several minutes later there's something a little woody that gives it more depth. It's really nice at this point, but it doesn't last. After half an hour the white musk is beginning to torment me again. It's not awful but I wish it wasn't so strong. Hours later, everything but the white musk has faded. I think it's an essential element of the scent, but I just don't get on with it! For that reason it's not one of my favourites, but I like it enough to wear occasionally. And I really like the way it changes.

This is a warm scent, slightly incensy. I imagine a hay meadow in late summer, grassy with yellow and purple flowers and lots of butterflies. I can't tell that there's any coconut, perhaps due to ageing, but I think I can detect non-coconut amber. The patchouli is subtle and not overwhelming. I think it's the combination of amber, tobacco and khus that makes me think of sun-warmed hay. Unfortunately the blueberry note spoils it for me (although it's not unwearable). I just don't like dried blueberries!

My absolute favourite. The notes that stand out most to me are musk, clove, black pepper. It has a slight resinous sweetness, and I think it's become less sweet as it's aged. I think it's similar to Dracul, but less sweet and piney. It's more of a masculine scent to me. It's dark and mysterious, and the name suits it perfectly.

This almost works for me but it has this sort of damp smell. Damp ashes. It's not particularly smoky, it's ashes that have been rained on for several days, but without any outdoor freshness. It's not grey so much as green. It's not really unpleasant, but it's not what I hoped for, although I think it could be very good combined with something else. I'll have to experiment a bit. But at least it doesn't smell anything like actual brimstone! (not that I expected it to...) Update: I actually like Brimstone more when I wear it in warmer weather, it's refreshing, but it's very similar to Djinn and I don't need both. Djinn is more smoky and I prefer it.

This is very rich and dark. The cocoa and leather are the most prominent notes. The patchouli stays in the background, and adds a sort of earthiness. The flowers are barely detectable but add complexity. It sweetens a little after a while, but it's never foody, and it remains rich and dark for hours. It's definitely in my top 10.

There's one note, which must be the cotton blossoms, that's a "clean laundry" scent and it absolutely overpowers everything else and sticks around too. I think most people would find it pleasant but I can't stand it. If I can find the imp again, I'll check if ageing has improved it, but I don't think this one is for me.

This is definitely warm and cosy! I find it hard to pick out individual notes except for the chestnuts and brown musk, but it's woody and a little creamy. It's fairly sweet but I don't find it syrupy. It's one of my favourites, but not one that I wear frequently, it's more of a special occasion scent.

When I first tried Azathoth a few years ago, the tangerine and saffron were dominant and it was more citrus than anything else. Along with the vetiver, it was harsh unless I applied just a tiny drop, in which case it was a pleasant citrus scent which I liked enough to buy a full bottle. It wasn't really dark, not compared to a lot of other scents. But it was definitely "high-pitched and screeching" unless handled with care! After losing the bottle for a couple of years, I found it again recently and while it's still recognisable as the same scent, it's changed a lot. It's more dark than bright now. It doesn't have that acidic tangerine note now, and I'm not sure I ever detected a black amber note; there's barely any sweetness to it. It's mainly burnt vetiver, cedar, and a touch of woody citrus which combine to smell like incense used in an evil ritual. I think it represents an insane, mindless god really well. It smells weird by ordinary perfume standards, but that's what I love about it (it's my second favourite scent after Old Demons of the First Class).

My first impression is of dried herbs. More than anything else, it's dry. It's one of the least sweet scents I've ever tried, with just a hint of herby sweetness in the background. It's almost bitter, but in a good way. After an hour it's mellowed a little, and become slightly more woody, and after five hours it's almost gone entirely. I struggle to find the right word to describe it. It's not exactly harsh, because that suggests unpleasantness somehow and it's not at all unpleasant. Austere perhaps? I think it evokes dry, barren rocks and vultures and forgotten tombs. And I love it.

Both the rose and pomegranate notes are well balanced for me. There's a fruity tartness, tempered by the rose, so it's neither too sweet nor too sour. On my skin it sweetens gradually, but doesn't last very long. I like it but it's not something I'd wear, I'd rather smell it on someone else.

Cucumber, but with a slight perfumy sweetness instead of the hint of sourness that real cucumber has. Like an idealised cucumber, but still very recognisably a cucumber. Very cool, fresh and green. Not really my thing though.

My first impression in the bottle is bright, overpowering bubblegum sweetness with a darkness in the background. On my skin it starts off very sweet bubblegum but quickly calms down to something more complex and subtle (although still very sweet), and the darker notes become more prominent. It's no longer candy, but an alien and beguiling flower. I usually can't stand very sweet scents, but I really like this one.

Very, very dark and resinous, but without being excessively incensey. There are floral notes, but they're not light and delicate in the way you usually envision when you hear the word "floral". The opium is fairly prominent, a little more so when I'm wearing it, but otherwise it's no different to how it smells in the bottle. I find the scent doesn't change much as it dries either. It's the darkest scent I've tried so far, and it's one of my absolute favourites.

Starts off very fruity, but swiftly settles down to something darker and more woody. For a while there's a fairly strong coconut smell, which to me makes it smell less shadowy and mysterious and more foody, but I think I'm just sensitive to coconut. It takes a while but the coconut blends in eventually and the scent as a whole becomes richer and really lives up to the description.

This is a very cool, damp scent. It's gentle. It reminds me of a spot under my grandma's yew hedge that was always a little sheltered from the weather, so I could sit there and stay dry while it rained. It doesn't exactly smell of yew, but it does smell of fresh wet soil and damp (but not mouldy) leaves and rose geranium. It really does smell like I'm outside gardening on a rainy spring day. It was in my first order, and it's still one of my favourites. I like to wear it on hot, dry summer days as a reminder that the rain will come eventually.

Initially I get... bell peppers. I don't really understand what's going on here, but after a few minutes it settles down to a warm, earthy and gently spiced scent. The orange blossom isn't as strong as I'd like, but overall it's very nice. Not one of my absolute favourites, but sometimes it's just what I want.

I'm looking for a GC scent that evokes sunlight, a lot of previous suggestions are no longer available and I'm sure there are newer ones!

Old Demons of the First Class is quite similar

Can anyone recommend something similar to Veritas? I had an imp and I meant to get a full bottle when I'd used it up but by the time I'd saved up for a big order it was gone!
