  1. Okay, so about a month ago I bought a partial bottle of the Ifrit (maybe one imp was left, and I used it quickly). I looooooooved it, so I bought a full bottle with my next order.

In my new bottle, I can't smell a THING. And on my skin it isn't much better! Very very faint spice. My old bottle (what's left of it) smells as strong and lovely as ever. Is this an aging thing? Or is there such a thing as a bad batch? I've got both bottles in front of me and they smell like completely different oils. :P

It took a while for mine to smell like much of anything. I'd say at least 2 weeks. It was great after a month. But, yeah, when I first got it...nothing.

  2. I am so afraid that I am going to spill my bottles that I decanted some into imps for my own use.

That's why I use reducer caps. I'm so clumsy that I have spilled before-- a bottle with a wand cap and a regular bottle-- and it was so traumatic that I switched forever to reducer caps. You get just the right amount that way.

  3. I have noticed that where I apply the oils (neck, by ears, cleavage, wrist) the skin is very dry. Some of the oils make me itch, mainly the aquatic ones, so I avoid them. Does anyone else get dry skin from the oils?

Would you suggest mixing the oils with odorless moisturizer?

    Thanks,

    Denise

Are you sure you're not having an allergic reaction to something in the scents? That said, some oils do have the ability to dry out skin.

  4. Try Dana O'Shee -- my skin also amps honey, and it didn't do so here. If you can find some, you might enjoy Chaste Moon, but it is one of the rarest of the rare, so good luck! :P

I second Dana O'Shee! It's unbelievably yum! Very milky and soothing.

Have you tried Dragon's Milk or Alice? Both are very creamy and milky, and I don't get any honey from them.

Mag Mell and Gluttony also come to mind.

Alice is lovely! Very milky and a wonderful carnation note in there. Gluttony was more caramel on me than milky.

I just got my new Gaiman decants, and I can happily tell you that Shadwell rocks that condensed milk/tobacco blend.

*Adds Shadwell to her wishlist.* Love milk! Love tobacco!

  5. I get most complimented on Dorian, Snow White (probably the most complimented), The Wild Men of Jezirat Al Tennyn, Les Bijoux, and Mme. Moriarty. It's a mixture of throw, skin chemistry, and other people's likes. With one of my friends if she likes something, she says it's powdery. Kills me every time. I find that other BPALers give the most compliments and have better noses (example: "Mmmm.. Red musk! Is that Mme. Moriarty?").

  6. I love dirt! Particularly fresh, moist, earthy dirt. I need to get more scents featuring it.

    So far I've tried:

Death Cap- My favorite earthy scent! It's all warm vanilla and fresh earth.

Nocnitsa- Another favorite! Smells like a walk in the forest. A leafy-berry-dirt smell.

Jazz Funeral- Boozy flowers give way to moist earth. Beautiful!

Burial- I liked it at first-- it was pine-y and earthy-- but then I started to amp the vetiver so much that I got a headache.

Worm Moon- I really love this. Potting soil with a hint of decaying wood and a tiny whiff of flowers.

Nosferatu- I didn't get earth from this. I got sweet, slightly rotting hay. It was a very powerful scent and reminded me very much of my grandparents' barn. I think I need a bottle of it just for that.

Malediction- It smelled like turpentine and vetiver. Gave me a migraine.

  7. Got this as a frimp recently. (I really need to go through my imps and finish up my reviews! :P )

Initial Impression: mostly jasmine with a hint of sweetness

    On Wet: JASMINE!

On Dry: OH HAI!! IZ JASMINE!!!!

    Final Impression: :D

  8. Ah! Love is a marvelous thing. Congratulations!

Some beautiful scents that remind me of the first flush of love..

I Died For Beauty- The Venusian splendor of ylang ylang and violet stirred by hyssop, frankincense, and grave loam.- So achingly beautiful. I'm not a floral gal, but I really love this. The frankincense and grave loam really make this scent!

Jezebel- Biblical witch, priestess of Astarte, and general troublemaker. A true role model for today's upwardly mobile Modern Woman. A gloriously decadent blend of honey, roses, orange blossom and sandalwood.- Decadent is definitely the word for this perfume.

Les Bijoux- Skin musk and honey, blood-red rose, orange blossom, white peach, red apple, frankincense and myrrh.- Very sexy, a bit sweet. This one unfolds slowly. Gorgeous!

Suspiro- A Latin word that means to sigh or draw a deep breath, that also suggests longing, desire, yearning, and a passionate wish. Ylang ylang with white plum, white orchid, jasmine, calla lily and lily of the valley.- Another floral unlike any other.

Scherezade- A master storyteller who possessed unfailing courage and compassion, a sharp, quick wit, and a true understanding of human nature. Saffron and Middle Eastern spices swirled through sensual red musk.- Sexy and soft. I love this one.

  9. I don't know if this is the right thread for it but it seemed the best option...

I was using TKO for the second time last night from a testable sniffie I got in a swap. I put some on plushie and kept it close to my face so that I could smell it. All good so far - then, at about 6am I woke up (thanks to the cat wanting feeding...), went back to bed 5 minutes later and took the TKO plushie near me again. When my alarm clock went off at 7:30am I felt extremely tired - much more so than usual. I felt a bit groggy and getting up was really hard work. I wondered if it was the TKO and the fact I fell asleep again with it so late in the morning so that the effect hadn't worn off yet by 7:30am? Has anyone experienced similar?

I don't know about anyone else's experiences with TKO, but I tend to wake up feeling very groggy when I get it on the fabrics near my head. I'm assuming that it's the prolonged sniffing that's doing it. When I have it only on my skin, I'm fine. It's usually faded before I wake up in the morning. But the few times I got it on my blankets or pillow, I'm dead beat for a good part of the morning-- but, then, I'm not a morning person either..

  10. I'm so glad I ordered Valentine of Rome! :P I can't wait to smell it.

These are the only frankincense blends I've tried so far:

I Died For Beauty: (The Venusian splendor of ylang ylang and violet stirred by hyssop, frankincense, and grave loam. [grave loam, in this case, is oakmoss and Spanish Moss]) Now, typically, I'm not a floral gal, but I do love this. It's not overpoweringly flowery, it's soft and blended. The frankincense adds a nice warmth, the moss a softness and roundness. Very pretty!

The Scales of Deprivation: (Thin, dark, and shadowed. A scent that offers no sustenance, comfort or satiety: lemon peel, white sage, frankincense, lavender fougere, sandalwood, vetiver and labdanum.) I love, love, love this! This has a light throw but lasts forever. The frankincense is prevalent in this one. Everything else plays a supporting role. It's not a lemony scent by any means!

Les Bijoux: (Skin musk and honey, blood-red rose, orange blossom, white peach, frankincense and myrrh.) Another favorite of mine though I don't get much in the way of frankincense or myrrh in this. It's primarily peach, musk, and honey on me but ymmv.

Penitence: (Smell sanctified! A blend of pure, pious frankincense and graceful myrrh.) I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but I really love this one! This is the holy grail of frankincense!

  11. Is there any ways the section AND the "title" of the area can be listed with the search engine results? Of maybe make the section a link? I just searched all over the site for sheol, because I couldn't find funeral oils, and the links only take you to the forum review site, not the page the oils are on.

Funeral Oils are listed under Ars Moriendi. Just scroll down and you'll find Sheol.

Well, I found it in the end, but for people who are new (like me) it's pretty hard to navigate the site when you don't know some of the pages names have changed, there are sections IN the sections, etc. Clicking on the link does no good for finding and/or adding the oil to your cart. (which I only use for paypal anyways, but it's easier to use to keep prices and such straight) Maybe This could go under suggestions for the site?

That's where I'd put it. It's a good suggestion. I know that I've often wished there were both a forum link and a site link so I could choose which I wanted to view.

  13. I love Daisy by Marc Jacobs. Does anyone know how Maenad compares?

Daisy: top notes- wild strawberry, violet leaf, and ruby red grapefruit, heart notes- violet, jasmine, and gardenia, base notes- vanilla infusion, musks, and white woods.

On me: the strawberry amps, there's some green, only a hint of citrus. Later I get the vanilla and musk. Hardly smell any florals, very little woods.

Okay, I just ordered a free sample of this from the website! I smelled it in a magazine and it was great. I don't think Maenad smelled anything like it, though. On me, Maenad smells like a strawberry shortcake doll...but in the imp, it smells a bit more complex. i think it would be worth a shot....

Thanks! Maybe if I get some Maenad and mix it with something I'll find a close cousin.

  14. I love Daisy by Marc Jacobs. Does anyone know how Maenad compares?

  15. Initial Impression: rose and stems. It smells like someone literally crushed an entire rose into the bottle.

On Wet: strong rose, undercurrent of green

On Dry: the green disappears and leaves a gorgeous red rose behind

Final Impression: I really, really love this. This is the ultimate rose scent!

    Rating (on a scale from 1-5): 4.5

  16. Initial Impression: grass, cream, hint of marzipan

On Wet: cream, some marzipan (some people said it smelled coconut-y), hint of grass

On Dry: more blended, less green. Now I see where people got that coconut-y smell from., sometimes I smell it.

Final Impression: ZOMG! I love this. I also got a ton of compliments on it when I wore it to work. Now I understand why people hoard it.

    Rating (on a scale from 1-5): 5

  17. Initial Impression: gingersnaps and cinnamon (maybe I need to age this a bit?)

On Wet: cinnamon with gingersnap undertone (I amp cinnamon)

On Dry: after a strange wood shavings phase, the cinnamon behaves itself and sinks quietly into the background so I can smell more gingery goodness

Final Impression: I really love the spiciness from this but the cinnamon is a bit strong in the beginning (unlike what I got from my friend's bottle). I think I need to age this a bit and hope it mellows out.

    Rating (on a scale from 1-5): 4
