    Midnight on the Midway (2006)

Hmmm.. it's odd, because straight on my skin it's like very nice soap plus incense. Perhaps the particular florals in this one are the type that turn automatically to soap on me, which happens only too often with my skin chemistry. It's very clean and gentle and there is an element of sugar in there, but the soap is much too prevalent.

    Dilution and Carrier Oils

Yeah, none of the craft stores seem to carry them. I get mine at sunburstbottle.com. I'm not sure where to get them other than that site.

    The Sportive Sun

Hmm, definitely smelling the cedar. It's a sweet cedar that doesn't turn into pencil shavings, but that may be because I definitely get heliotrope and frangipani behind it. It's a very interesting woody-floral. There's a bright, sunny element to it, too. It definitely does the name justice. Nice summer blend, prettiest in its wet stages.

    March Hare

Hmm.. this is odd. It's reminding me of some sort of medicine teamed with marmalade and spices. It's making me stomach churn a little bit, unfortunately. It's sweet, spicy, and syrupy. Like Robitussin poured on top of marmalade with a dash of cloves. Not for me. =\

    The Jersey Devil

I smell tomato leaf, pine, and something sweet. It's very like walking through a tomato garden that happens to be in a forest full of pine and blackberries. Oddly, there's a creamy element that comes to fore when I pull my nose away, which I can't really say what that could be. The pine is there but definitely not overwhelming or trying to make itself incredibly obvious. Unfortunately, due to my sucky skin chemistry, it turns to soap after a while.. but it was nice while it lasted!

    The Candy Butcher 2006

Dark chocolate with a heavy cream undertone. In the bottle it's like opening up a packet of powdered cocoa and taking a sniff. It's dry, but definitely a pleasant smell. Or it could also be chocolate icing that's been cooling. It's like that wet on the skin, too. Instead of being rich and deep like chocolate syrup or melted chocolate chips, this is dryer, more subdued. There's a plastic component trying to take over as it dries, but it's not proving to be entirely successful. I can still smell the yummy chocolate. I love this wet, but I'm going to have to see if it goes totally plastic after a while before I decide whether or not to get a bottle. A little while later and after a shower where I was careful not to wash my left arm, it's morphed a lot after being under light water. It's deeper and the plastic note has gone. Really like this one for when I'm feeling foody but don't want to smell like cake.

Walk into a florist's shop, inhale deeply...

L'Ecole des Filles has a flower shop feel to it. =)

    Dragon's Heart

Hmm.. there's something odd about this. Sort of a dusky, musky, and strong spiciness that reminds me vaguely of.. burnt eggs.. or something plus musk and some odd sweetness. This has been my introduction to dragon's blood, so I guess that's what dragon's blood smells like. It's probably 95% my skin chemistry being sucky. But this sort of gives me a headache, unfortunately. Swappin'.

    Chaste Moon 2005

In the imp, verrrry creamy vanilla. First on, there's some sort of spicy edge to the creaminess. It's registering as either ginger or dragon's blood resin. It's very comforting, in the camp of scents like Mouse's Long and Sad Tale. At one point it reminds me of the craft store I used to go to to buy fabric, which isn't a bad thing. I miss that store. I know when it gets to be a few hours after application, there's something about it that reminds me of the scented dolls I had when I was a kid. This is pretty. A scent I would use to either go to sleep or feel relaxed.

    Villainess and BPAL

    Gloop + Boomslang.

    Lurid

Lavender, white musk, and ozone is what I get. I can't detect the currants. At first, it's really pretty and very unlike any BPAL I've tried except maybe Cloister Graveyard minus the mint note. But it dries down to have an odd, salty, sharp scent that makes my nose tingle a bit. Which is a shame, since it's absolutely stunning in its beginning stages. There's something very pretty and unique under the sharpness, but I can't see myself buying a bottle.

    Poisoned Apple

In the imp and first on the skin, this smells like a true apple. Not that sickly apple scent that's mass-produced in almost every store that sells "apple" scents.. but what you smell when you have a freshly pealed apple up to your nose. It's delicate and juicy.. not overly sour or sweet. On the drydown, the other notes peak out, and it goes ever-so-slightly soapy-sweet on me pretty quickly. Stupid skin chemistry. Another swap.

    Whitechapel

Smells quite like limeade. I don't get really anything but the lime and citron notes.. very, very lightly detect the white musk but can't smell any lilac at all. It has a bit of that cleaning fluid quality to it when wet, too. Slightly powdery on the drydown but still cleaning fluid. It smells better after it's been on for a good long time, but still not good enough to buy a big bottle. I will be swapping this one.

    Pele

That's odd.. I don't really get tropical florals. I get more traditional florals. I can't really explain what I mean by that.. but this is reminding me of a perfume my mom has been wearing for years though I can't put my finger on which one since she has so many. I also agree that it smells like there's a lot of White Musk in there.. which I like only in small quantities. This is kind of musty on me and it fades really quickly. I'm going to have to swap it away. =\

    Defututa

This is so grown up and sophisticated and demure and lovely. I feel too young and immature for this one. And I swear I've smelled this scent before somewhere else.. it reminds me so much of a bubble bar or bath bomb from Lush I've tried. Maybe All That Jas or Romance In A Stone, since they're the only florally ones I've tried.. but I can't put my finger on it at all. For those who can't wear certain scents (like Sophia, for example) for the jasmine, give this a try. It's a subdued, delicate jasmine.. not an in-your-face jasmine. I think it's the honey and smokey vanilla that's making this semi-creamy and soft. But it's much more complex than just those three notes.. the other notes are working harmoniously so that I can't really detect any of them or can say that jasmine is the dominant note.. it's a creamy floral for somebody very sophisticated. I would only wear this on very special occasions. I'm not sure about a big bottle for this one, I'm definitely going to have to give it a thought since I generally only like buying bottles of scents I know I'll reach for often.. I'll have to see.

    Golden Priapus

Vanilla and amber can do no wrong on my skin. Until there are other notes I really don't care for mixed in. In the imp and on my skin, I can smell the beautiful, warm, creamy combination of vanilla and amber underneath the sharp pineyness. It's a soft pine, but it's still pine and I'm not a fan of pine in the least. Otherwise, this would be utterly beautiful. If you like pine scents and like creamy scents, this one is definitely for you. But it's unfortunately not for me.

    Kuang Shi

Hmm, I didn't get any of the sharpness or bitterness others have gotten, oddly. Usually when someone else gets sharp and/bitter, I do too. I get soft white musk and the citrus elements.. can barely detect the sandalwood in any of the oil's phases. It's sort of a creamy, very soft citrus. It fades pretty quickly on me and always remains light. It's pretty, and I do love citrus fragrances, but it's so soft and faint that I don't think I'll buy a big bottle, but will probably save my imp for the warmer months.

    Boomslang

In a word? Yyyyyyuuuuummmmm. At Will Call I was so fascinated by the thickness of this stuff that I had to try it. I watched it drip from the wand and it accidentally landed on my boobs, and let me tell ya, it took forever to run down my skin, it was that thick! Then when I went to rub it in it was like tanning lotion since it's so dark! It took a little while to get it to disappear into the uber paleness that is my skin. As others have said, it's like chocolate covered Snake Oil. Not foody, really, but scrumptious nevertheless. This is sort of how I thought Snake Oil would smell. I think the rice milk registers as smooth vanilla in my head. I don't like Snake Oil, but I really do love this. The note that's in Snake Oil that makes me dislike it is hardly in this. I don't remember detecting it at all in the bottle at Shelldoo's, so it probably disappears with age to reveal creamy, chocolately Snake Oil. I love how there are gritty parts solidifying on the sides of the bottle.. it actually sort of looks like teensy clumps of cocoa mix and I love it. So yes, I got a bottle.

Recs for those who can't do sweet perfumes?

I was thinking maybe give 51 a try? To me it's not sweet at all, it's dusky and glowing. Are there any well-known perfumes or oils you've tried and have liked that we could get more of an idea of your tastes?

    Nefertiti

Strangely, in the imp and first applied, this reminds me strongly of the scent of the refrigerated section of a flower shop. It's cool, and there's no real distinct scent, but it smells nice. When dried, the sandalwood is what's dominant. The green part that I detected in the imp is still there (probably the herbs), but somewhere in the background. I definitely get whiffs of the iris, and it's pretty strong. It's all right, but I'm definitely not in love just yet. I think the iris is making it a little soapy. I'm going to age my imp to see if the iris calms down a little bit. Perhaps the sandalwood will come to the fore then.

    Tamora

First on, this is quite like Fae. But after it dries, it's almost nothing like Fae. First dried, it's creamy peaches. Very lovely, very warm. After a half an hour, the sandalwood really peeps out, and I smell it almost more than anything else. It's spicy, woody, fruity and creamy all at the same time to me, somehow. It's really quite beautiful. Still debating whether or not to get a bottle since it's that time of the month so I need to try it again in a few days just to be sure, but this was really lovely.

    Blood Countess

Hmmm.. there's something very sharp, tart, and biting about this. That could definitely be the roses, since roses hate me. I think I smell a trace of the gardenia, and there's definitely the berry under there trying to sweeten it up, but losing to the astringence of the flowers. I do think this represents Elizabeth Bathory well (the sharpness) but, alas, it's not my cup of tea.

    Lyonesse

Ohhhhh, this is yummy. It's creamy, golden, delicious vanilla. I wouldn't say it's foody, because there's definitely something underneath it - possibly the amber or the musk - keeping me from wanting to lick my arm, but this is quite heavenly and yummy. Going on the top 10, I think. Getting a bottle.
  24. Agreed that Dorian and Vanilla Lace don't smell similar. Vanilla Lace smells like warm, thick vanilla icing. Dorian smells like.. well, I can't pin it down. I've always just said Dorian smells like hot sex.. lol

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

My mom went through stages where she'd wear only one perfume. When I was really little, it was Red Door. When I was 6-9, it was White Diamonds. At some point when I was still young, it was Versace's Blue Jeans. Recently it's been the light pink (lily) version of Angel and The Body Shop's Japanese Cherry Blossom mixed together. However, the scent I always associated with her was the one from the restaurant she used to work at. It was very specific, the smell. She always smelled like their food, lol. Now she smells like strong perfume.
