CXLVI (146): This blend starts off with a strong pine note and something which smells astonishingly clove-like. Now this is a combo I would not have thought would be good, but it is surprisingly nice to smell, especially since the pine doesn't overshadow the other notes. In fact, this blend puts me very strongly in mind of Yule celebrations, and the incense I like to burn at midwinter. Yes, there is also a smoky undernote to this as well...almost incense-y, which quickly overtakes the initial pine.

I traded for this bottle with another forumite, because it didn't work with her skin chemistry. It does with mine, fortunately, and I love it!

  2. wait...snow glass apples in a COBALT BOTTLE?! !!!

I know! Mine (via ComicCon boothie -- thanks again so much, alhbooks!) got here yesterday, and the cobalt bottle surprised me. I thought the Lab had quit using them a couple of years ago... The blue suits the coldness of the scent as well as the art of the label very well! :P

edited to thank the right person, correct a verb tense, and add the phrase 'label art.'

CLXXI - also known as CTIV: 171 -- Cloves! Cloves and fruit -- but not the apricot of Depraved, nor the cherry of Blood Kiss, nor yet the fig of Hetairae. It's almost like the Ecstasy of Passion, but not so much amber, yay! Amber doesn't always play nice with my chemistry. This is a lot like Clémence, but no patchouli, and kind of deeper somehow and a bit sweeter. This is a keeper, yay! I may have to play this fun game of BPAL Roulette again...

OK, after a bit, this is even better! OMG, there is such luscious smoothness in this blend! Definitely sweet clove, but there is something else that is keeping this soft and smooth and just sexy. Mr. Stellans approves, hee! :P

  4. Woah, Scylla's review of the Torture Queen states that it is Snow-Flakes on her from application to drydown, and let me tell you... it smells like Snow-Flakes in the bottle, minus a very minute amount of the snowy-sweetness.

on me, it's more Sea of Glass but much better. The metal note keeps it from Snow-Flakes IMO, and the less sweetness is more than minute with my skin chemistry, which I am the first to admit is weird. :P I really wasn't sure I'd like this one, but I do. It may be a skin-only blend though, rather than locket-able. Many metallic notes are headache-inducing in my scent lockets, but are fine on skin.

  5. ...

ETA...Now I wonder if it's just me and I have a wacky sense of smell. I just asked my Dad's opinion and he said they smelled nothing alike. :P

If it was my dad? (or my husband) I would trust my own sense of smell! :D My husband has about four things that he says perfumes smell like: baby powder, cookies, an old lady and patchouli. At least that's when he doesn't like them very much, otherwise he'll say, "Oh, that one's nice."

Mine has about 3 replies when asked for his opinion on my smell choices:

    1) Okay

    2) Ugh

    3) smells like carp dough (this is not a good thing, it means icky sweet/imitation vanilla flavoring smell)

I've just about given up asking his opinion, and just waiting to see if he smells and smiles instead.

To keep this on topic, does anyone else think Jezirat al Tennyn reminds them of Singing Moon, or is it just me?

  6. Burial is my favorite piney scent. It's got a dirt element that makes it more like the pine needles carpeting the forest floor.

I just got Thanatopsis as a freebie from the lab and was pleasantly surprised by it. It smells a lot like a pine forest at night. I think it's going to be a great scent for fall and winter (especially since I have to avoid a lot of the usual winter blends because the snow/ice notes are such a disaster on me).

Kenjari, have you tried Snow Moon? I have an aversion to anything mint which eliminates most cold/snow/ice blends for me, but Snow Moon? Is abolute piney, deep forest love!

When I first opened the bottle of Sugar Moon, my heart sank. All I could smell was burnt sugar, with a slight plastic-y note behind. Was this going to be another Lunacy to break my heart, like Old Moon did?

*cue angels singing* Hallelujah! This blend reacts to my skin chemistry in such a way as to put the most expensive blend in the world to shame! My skin sings with the ecstasy of the wonderful Smut-but-better, SnakeOil-but-better, SnakeCharmer-but-better scent of Sugar Moon! Even my husband, whose normal opinion of my scents range from "What's that?\" to "You smell like carp dough!? likes the smell of Sugar Moon on me. And that's a good thing. :P

  8. wow...i just got an imp of y'ha-nthlei and to my nose, it is selkie's GC sister. both soft, slightly sweet aquatics. though i still have some selkie left, i'm definitely upgrading to a bottle of y'ha-nthlei in the near future...after i'm finished wiping clean my bank account with the next big update :P

This is on my bottle short list also. I didn't like aquatic notes much, really, until Beth and her magic lab entered my life! I'm even discovering some blend with a small (very, very small) mint note which not only don't make me sick, but that I actually like (Moon of Ice, for example).

  9. I just got an imp of Tombstone, and I have to say, the drydown on me is a dead ringer for Love's Philosophy. The wet stage is iffy, but once it's dry it's the same creamy vanilla.

I second this. Tombstone has more of a woodsy note, and lacks the wintergreen that some Love's Philosophy bottles have, but it does seem to be the same vanilla.

Edited to add: I really like Love's Philosophy, but Tombstone is one of my all-time favorites.

ITA. The only thing that put me off about LP was the wintergreen impression I got from it, but Tombstone is all love. :P

  10. zankoku_zen, there's nothing worse than when a bad memory ruins a nice scent! I knew a girl who wore Coco back in the 80s but she smoked so damn much that she warped the smell into something awful - so when I smelled the normal, should-have-been-lovely Coco on anyone else I would get so grossed out by it even though the ashtray reek element was missing. If I smelled Coco today I bet I would have the same reaction.

It's funny, but you do associate a smell with a person. I smell Angel and it starts minor heart palpitations because I'm worried I'll run into my ex-boss.

For me, Chanel #5 is what my mother wore when she wore perfume (my dad is horribly allergic). So while I like the smell, I would never be able to wear it. More importantly, I shouldn't want to *hug* random strangers just because they smell like my mother... :D

Wow! My daughter said the exact same thing! In fact, Chanel No.5 was my scent too (the eau de cologne though, not the perfume which I found too strong) until I discovered BPAL. Now I don't wear anything but BPAL and my daughter says she doesn't 'recognize' me by smell any more! :P

On the other hand, I've totally enabled her with the Salon Sunflowers!

  11. It's not the best but it's nighttime here and my best pics are taken in the daylight. 876944.JPG

I hope this is not to large, if it is (Mods) please let me know and I will provide a link instead.

ETA: BaB ... the background has a very very faint light gray poem on the label.

Thank you so much, BBA! That is totally not what I expected ... good thing I didn't go down the script-romantic font path I was thinking about. It looks like the scent name is in a sort of typewritery font ... interesting!

    THANK YOU! :P

It puts me in mind of Christian typing his romantic stuff in Moulin Rouge...

  12. Comfort scent is Snow Moon, which reminds me of my beloved North Carolina mountains in winter time. This can put me to sleep like no other scent, even those containing lavender. Snow Moon was my first BPAL obsession, and I have managed to amass an almost unconscionable number of bottles.

Oh, this makes me want to try Snow Moon. I was born and raised in the NC mountains. *is now homesick*

PM me; I think I'll be able to enable you with a decant...

My favorite cheery scent is Jazz Funeral. Something about its bright citrus with its underlying dirt note is just amazing to me, and any time I sniff it I smile. Thank goodness it's a GC, and one I hope never gets discontinued.

  14. For just a second, I get a faint hint of what Long Night Moon should smell like. Cool, aquatic, pale misty flowers - the winter floral I've been looking for.

And then it goes all wrong. It smells like plastic! It smells like hospitals! Wah! I need to figure out which of the many notes is doing this to me...

I'm so sorry it goes plastic-y on you, because on me it does smell like you say it should: "Cool, aquatic, pale misty flowers - the winter floral I've been looking for." In fact, I skipped the Lunacy I was supposed to wear last night (Peony) and chose to wear Long Night Moon again because I really love it so much. I'm very grateful to Beth for this blend...it's wonderful!

  15. LongNightSS.jpg

I was so very nervous about this lunacy; when I first read the notes and saw the mint note *shudder* .... well, I ordered my standard (for me) 2 bottles anyway, hoping it would work on me and knowing I could probably sell/swap it if necessary.

I am here to tell you it is not necessary! The mint note? Non-existent to my nose, even in the bottle, but more importantly: on my skin! At first sniff, this is a very nice white floral, but as it warms on my skin, the scent cools, strange as that may sound. There is a lovely chilly note in this (the blue musk?) which makes it so much more than just a nice floral, plus the sage gives a faint herby scent which perfectly complements the chill. Musk isn't always kind to my body chemistry, but in this blend it behaves so well! I wish I'd ordered another couple of bottles for back-up, because I'm going to enjoy wearing it in my Nightly Lunacy Rotation.

Final Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars.

oh, ugh! All I get from this is a strong mildewy-rotten smell which doesn't really morph much but only mellows slightly. This is not a scent for me at all. I admit I had qualms about this one, but then I did about Shadwell too and I ended up liking that one. I'm glad I joined a decant circle, though...

  17. I am looking forward to the rest of the Haunted House set, and Hexennacht! Oh, all of them!

Err -- Hexennacht was a glitch and was not really available, so there won't be any labels appearing for it.

Yeah, that's what I get for not reading the update thread past the initial posting. I saw the first update where a glitch had it (Hex 07) and never read further. :P

Oh well. Maybe Spring 2008, where it really belongs anyway?
