  1. Note - I wrote only one review for the set. But since there are two entries (as it should be, I think! sorry I didn't do it earlier) I'm duplicating my entire review here.

No description. This scent was available to VIP guests at a special reception with Neil Gaiman at the NYC Comic Con 2008 as a fundraiser for the CBLDF. After the VIP meet&greet, he read for the general admission crowd a selection of pieces including an unreleased short story titled "Orange". This scent set was create to go with the story.

Orange is actually a set. An orange burlap bag contained a 5 ml of Orange, and an imp of Dark Chocolate.

The imp label reads: "Inspired by Neil Gaiman's short story "Orange". Use this to feed your perfume. (Inedible for humans, please use only to feed supernatural orange lifeforms!)"

(I'm not going to give away the story. It's one of those that you have to read or hear to fully experience. I'm sure youtube will have tonight's reading at some point!)

Orange: Not surprisingly, it smells like orange! But it's a soft orange, more like orange sherbet. In fact I almost think it's creamy, especially in the drydown, and reminds me of an orange creamsicle. No obvious cream notes that I can tell, it's just soft and not a harsh citrus at all.

Dark Chocolate: This is that magic ingredient in Wulric and Boomslang. Like those, the dark part separates out - I can't tell how much is the dark oil because the label covers the imp, but it seems more like Boomslang in color once it's mixed up and put on. Not bitter chocolate, just a dark creamy cocoa, it's wonderful.

Together: Should I lie and say it's horrible? You know it's not true. It's the perfect blend of orange and chocolate. sweet but not candylike. soft and refreshing.

It's a fairly straight forward scent meaning that you probably know if you like orange, and chocolate, and I doubt this would change your existing opinions on it either way. But it is beautifully executed, especially how the orange is soft and refreshing at the same time.

I tried both on together before Neil got around to me at the reception. I told him I put both on together, and he sniffed my wrist then he said another girl had only tried the orange, and he made her come over and sniff too!

Hours later, I got in my car after taking the ferry home and taking photos of the NY skyline with an almost full moon. My wrist was faint (I tested sparingly) but just wonderfully soft, barely orange as you usually know it, but leaving the impression of orange as a concept, with a hint of dark chocolate.

Love Neil, love "Orange", it was a fabulous night!

(More photos will be posted to my flickr account and a report of the whole evening in my blog. If not tonight, early next week.)

ETA: it's possible there's a subtle floral in here, maybe orange blossom? I have no idea. But I'm not huge on strong florals, and it's not strong floral... I hope more discerning noses can help me later...

  3. the only tiki scent i ordered.

opening the bottle and sniffing, it was almost orgasmic I loved it so much!

I put it on and it turned not-so-nice. I didn't have the note list on hand, and it smelled like it had vetiver in it. (Which was unusual because the few vetiver scents i CAN wear, are harsher wet and nicer in the drydown.)

I may try it again. I may try it in a scent locket or diffuser. But I'm afraid this one is a disappointment for me... :P

  4. This smells like a rich spoiled brat who was wearing too much expensive floral perfume, after her shower upon entry to the prison system. i kinda get the citrusy stuff while wet, but it's a powdery soap scent, with a hint of expensive florals beneath it. Yes, a distant cousin to EBM (enraged louse musk??)

ok i smell a SLIGHT SLIGHT hint of that note that's in snow white.

definitely clean, powdery, with the hint of a past of debauchery.....

too powdery/floral for me, but very fitting for the name/theme!

  5. some replies from over at the henna page! including a friend of someone here ;o) (I didn't want to share real names without permission so I changed BPAL'ers name to her initial!) It's not a definite answer, but may help with some notes to look for in scents!

Catherine's husband says she's away today but has experimented with henna blossom EO's, and she'll get back to me when she gets home.

    Heather:

My friend M (the star of my homepage! heh) is also a fan of BPAL... a huge one! She makes awesome candles and has a ridiculously huge selection of oils (not as many as BPAL...but definitely as many as only a BPAL-fan-run candle company would ever carry). I've asked her to make some tarts and/or votives for me to use while doing/making/thinking about henna, and after a bit of brainstorming, this is what we came up with out of her own set of available oils:

"What do you think of doing either orange blossom+clove

or cedar+nag champa? These are what seemed closest to

the smells I associate with henna (the first the

smells around the room as I'm doing the more pleasant

part of the preparation, the second with the actual

earthy smell of the henna+cajeput). I think the

    orange+clove would smell best. "

Check out M's site here: EnkindleCandleCo.com. They're some damned awesome candles and she currently sells them for far too cheap...

I'm really interested to know if there are any answers about actual henna plant EOs... and I'm sure M would be as well!

Hi there Katie! A little while back, I found some incense that is supposed to be scented after henna blossoms. It's called Heena, made by the Hem company. I get it from nepalishop.com and it's WONDERFUL! I burn it when I do anything with henna, and at all my shows while I'm playing the drums. The guys in my band and some of our friends have come to love it as well ( they had no choice...lol) I could only imagine what a henna-blossom EO would smell like.

    Peace

    Shawn

  6. oooh hmmm let me think....

nothing quite like henna comes to mind, but i use in my mix (for body art, usually not for hair, unless it's just leftover stuff from festivals) an essential oil mix of cajeput and orange. cajeput, tea tree oil, lavender are probably the most commonly used oils that i know of from my forums...

if there's anyway to get an oil extract from the henna plant, i would be all over that!

i think it's a very earthy hay scent... no green grass. you may want to try to find some premature burial (discontinued)? i have that and like it, but i'll have to sniff it again and see if it is similar to henna.

ETA: I asked the henna expert, Catherine Cartwright Jones over at hennapage.com - if you are interested in following it up. But I will report back here anything I find!

  7. i decanted all the snakes last night, and boomslang stole my heart. yup, wet it's a non-foody/non-sweet cocoa, which is yummy. but dry, i barely smell any cocoa, it's all glorious teakwood! it reminds me of something in kathmandu (my fav) and tombstone, but spicier, warmer, creamier..... i was testing a ton of scents so i look forward to wearing this on its own, drowning myself in it.

*off to order my own bottle or three*

  8. initially sweet foody, too much so for me (along the lines of underpants perhaps?)

dries down and becomes herbal lavender... not bad...

now, it's sandalwood, and something.... nicer.

not as crazy about this one as i thought i would be. but still very unique. quite the multiple personality scent! :P

  9. Yule

this does not scream evergreen. it's wood and mistletoe and a little evergreen, warmed with herbal/floral/resins in the background. it's definitely warmer than yuletide, and i picture a room heavily decorated with natural branches and pinecones and a roaring fire in the fireplace.... so amazingly gorgeous, really really special!!!

  10. i love this!!

to me, this is snow white plus mint. not too strong on the mint, but really nice. so so happy! i don't really smell any florals, and hope i don't... (i'm testing 6 at once here and this is a delicate scent, so i must test it alone sometime!)

hmm as time goes on it's less and less like snow white, but so far still really nice! but maybe not quite the true love i thought it to be...

  11. this was pure bubblegum on me and i hated it!!! :P

dry, it still smelled like bubble gum. granted, i didn't sniff it more than 20 minutes later, because of a slight accident at home (um. i dropped my garbage ALL down my stairs, it smelled horrible and i had to clean it up, then hopped in the shower because i was sweaty and nauseous) but i can tell you this one i won't bother trying to test again. no thank you. buh-bye!

i can't stand bubblegum smell. blech.

  12. Second review for CCCIV (304)

Yup, in the bottle fizzy cola!!!

unfortunately on, all i smell is what i think is vetiver. let me explain that i don't mind when vetiver is a VERY MINOR part of a blend, but those that are strongly vetiver make me run out of the room screaming. This is inbetween. Dry, it's a little less harsh but still that vetiver smell, a little incensey, possibly some wood and vanilla notes.

vetiver or not, i'm betting a vetiver lover will like this much more.

  13. this was SOOOO exciting - i got two bottles!

    CCIX (209)

    bottle - sweet coconut

wet - smells like a pina colada! nice, sweet but not overboard

dry - eventually this hits a state that i don' care for... i don't know what it is. it gets almost musky/burnt sugar?? not sure.

the beginning is nice, but not something i'd wear much, and the later stage does not smell that great. i loved trying it but will probably swap it out!

    CCX (210)

bottle - light floral, touch of aquatics

wet - almost all aquatics now - really nice and light, not the masculine ozone. almost like szessepony without the fruity/sweet floral, this is a much milder wildflower floral, and slightly more aquatic

seriously, two things i like but i'm really fussy about, aquatics (some bother my throat) and floral. and it's a perfect blend of the 2!!! i'm in love :P
