I used to have (actually I guess I still do) relatives that live in HK. My last trip there was in the late eighties and I still smell things that bring back distinct, vivid memories of my short time there.

It is SUCH a memorable city, isn't it? I do the same thing -- smells, a quick glance at something, and I'm right back there.

I wish I had relatives who lived there, just for an excuse to go back! Even most of my friends are now at college in the USA.

How long did you get to stay?

I always loved HK at Christmastime. All the lights and the festivities are just amazing. I agree, it's one of the oddest places but so fascinating. I hope you get to go back soon!

Did you once live in Hong Kong? I love that city! I had to get Fire Pig, too. I'm all about lunar new year scents!

I did! I've actually lived in Hong Kong longer than anywhere else at this point, for nine years. I hated it when I was there (probably because I hated the school I was at) but now I really wish I could go back and reexplore it because it's as close to a home as I have.

I'm glad you got some ideas! Definitely try 'Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress' if that intrigued you. It's really fabulous... my review couldn't possibly do it justice. And it led me to all these other books about the Cultural Revolution that I've got piled up waiting for me.

I love Margaret Atwood! Have you read Blind Assassin? It was my first Atwood book and I just loved it.

I actually haven't read it yet but it's now on my list!

Have you gotten to read Oryx and Crake yet? It's really fabulous if you haven't.
