  1. You know how craft stores smell when they get in a new stock of potpourri? That's pretty much what this smells like on me, for hours, with lots of throw.

I was hoping for the foody loveliness everyone else seems to get, but for me, the spicy/greasy/leather notes are taking over, and I can only get a tiny bit of sweetness as a complex component note (and that's only because I know to look for it).

It's a nice nostalgic scent for me, but not one I wish to wear.

  2. This is a truly amazing scent. It smells like BBW's Coconut Lime Verbena + Xiuhtecuhtli, but is more than the sum of its parts. Frankly, it's the most perfectly tropical fragrance I've ever smelled.

Sadly, it fades very quickly on me, but I love it so much I'm going to make a scent pendant for it. :D

  3. In the bottle: sweet, narcotic and soporific. Honey and a heady floral bloom.

Wet: very sweet for a floral; not as sweet as a BPAL foodie scent. Honey, honeysuckle and lotus are the strongest notes.

Top Notes: Narcotic lotus and ROSE* and honey.

Middle notes: Still sweet, with lotus and rose* as the primary notes.

Base notes: honey and soft powder with a strong floral component.

*rose may be the tiniest part of this scent; I expect it wouldn't even show up for most people. My body just throws rose to an unbelievable degree.

All in all, I like this scent! It's sweet, but it's sophisticated and sexy in a very old-fashioned way. It's not a day or work fragrance by any stretch of the imagination. Save it for nights out. :)

  4. Some more recent finds...

BBW's blackcurrant/vanilla aromatherapy smells like Eat Me.

Colonial Candle Company of Cape Cod's Gold and Frankincense candle smells like Angel and/or Xiuhtecutli.

Pink Sugar smells sort of like Pink Phoenix. Or rather, Pink Phoenix smells like Pink Sugar layered with Hollywood Babylon.

BBW's Twisted Peppermint 3-in-1 smells like Lick It.

BBW's Spiced Apple Rapture 3-in-1 smells like Brisingamen.

  5. I'm not someone who normally goes for that kind of mood, but I do try to keep my mind open when looking at a new scent, so I have run across a few. Some of these are not super-dark at first glance, but I'm including them because they may smell differently on you.

    Black Annis

    Brimstone

    The Caterpillar

    The Cracked Bell

    Death

    Hemlock

    Highwayman

    Loviatar

Numb (smells like fresh blood to me)

    Pain

    Sloth

    Two Monsters

    Wolfsbane

And I would give the Dark Elements collection a try, as well as Destroying Angel, Slobbering Pine, Kumari Kandam and The Demon Islands (although I haven't tried any of those).

  6. I find that Xiuhtecuhtli smells like Angel, but is a bit mellower. Which is FINE by me, because Angel tends to have an overwhelming throw when I wear it, and Mugler is fixated on the idea that a cloud of fragrance is glamorous, so all his bottles dispense huge quantities. I end up having to take the spray top off to get just a little bit.

As far as layering goes, try Le Serpent Qui Danse with Angel or Xiuhtecuhtli. :> I would also try White Musk, Danube, or any of the lighter floral fragrances.

  7. I bought an imp of this the same time I bought Monster Bait: Closet, since I noticed some note similarities.

If forced to pick, Eat Me is the better scent. They are similar in many ways, but Eat Me seems like the more sophisticated of the pair. (Closet Monster is a very heavy foody scent). It smells sweet and vanilla-y, but the currants give it a perfumey edge that is absolutely divine. It also has a airy, powdery twist - which I love.

I normally use a form to break down the scents, but I tried this on when I couldn't sit by the computer and write down the phases. My apologies.

    Throw: Medium

    Rating: 5 out of 5

Related Recommendations: Antique Lace, Regan, Baneberry, Le Serpent Qui Danse, Monster Bait: Closet, and possibly Dorian.

  8. Hypothesis: this is going to be AWESOME.

    In bottle: Buttercream!

    Drydown: MANGO-APRICOT.

Top notes: bourbon and berries and MANGO-APRICOT.

Middle notes: Buttercream and bourbon and berries and cake! (Not death). Also, APRICOT. (No mango). Then it morphs into that salty note from Shill, berries and bourbon.

Base notes: vanilla, berries, and (wtf) popcorn.

    Throw: medium.

    Rating. 4.5 out of 5.

Conclusion: awesome in entirely unexpected ways!

  9. In imp: sharp floral over a powdery citrus base.

Wet: The citrus-amber combination amps up and takes over. Note: this is not a complaint.

Drydown: The jasmine comes out, although I can still smell the citrus/amber.

Top notes: sweet citrus, powdery amber and some tangy jasmine.

Middle notes: Jasmine (which doesn't do well on me), heavily masking some luscious powdery sweetness.

    Base notes: :P Amber.

    Throw: medium

    Rating: 4 out of 5

  10. Wet: cypress, with the rose and tonka underneath.

    Drydown: it gets a little menthol-y. :?

Top notes: Ginger, cypress and patchouli. Verrreh nice.

Middle notes: Ginger, cypress, tonka and patchouli. It has an almost cedar-y effect.

Base notes: It's kind of a powder-y cedar now.

    Throw: medium

    Rating: 4 out of 5

  11. In imp:OH. So that's linden! :D Good to know!

Wet: Oh, man, this is doing some pretty pretty morphing on my skin.

Drydown: jaslkdfjdaslkfjdaslfjdaslf dryer sheets. What happened?

Top notes: Linden and dryer sheets, and if I sniff real close, that really nice scent I got when this was wet.

Middle notes: Dryer sheets tempered with linden.

Base notes: Slightly musty linden :P

    Throw: medium-light

    Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

  12. In imp: Lavender

Wet: lavender, with a sultry undertone.

    Drydown: missed it.

    Top notes: Sultry lavender.

    Middle notes: Spicy lavender.

    Base notes: Spicy lavender.

    Throw: medium

Rating: 4.5 out of 5. Out of all the dream blends, this is the only one I'd wear as a perfume.

Effect on sleep: I slept more soundly than usual :P ; I don't remember if I dreamed. I mean, of course I dreamed, I just didn't wake up in the middle of one so I can't remember it.

  13. In imp: Soft lavender

Wet: Ooh, I don't know what that is. I get this soft, gently floral scent with a bloom of incense underneath.

Drydown: Lavender with some dry spices.

Top notes: A sweet "rosey" note along with some lavender. I say "rosey" since rose generally doesn't smell this good on me.

Middle notes: The lavender returns, softened by florals and an elusive hint of incense.

Base notes: Spices and that rosey note.

    Throw: Medium-light

    Rating: 4 out of 5

  14. In imp: mock orange and something....else. I know mock orange isn't listed, but that's what I smell!

    Wet: missed it.

    Drydown: missed it.

Top notes: Something high and clean smelling. A soapy, fresh floral.

Middle notes: Ooh, wait. I actually smell something aquatic! Normally aquatics go all dryer sheet-y on me, but this one feinted towards dryer sheet, then bolted for aquatic. A nice fresh sea breeze of an aquatic, too. :P

Base notes: damn, it's fading, but it's going to more of a low tide aquatic scent. The good kind of low tide. :D Oh, and maybe someone put their laundry out to dry in the distance.

    Throw: medium, then light.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5. Not my thing, but it does what it does very well.

  15. In imp: mmm, tangerine.

    Wet: spicy tangerine

Drydown: carnation and roses and some powdery amber

    Top notes: carnation and amber

Middle notes: a rather stale mix of carnation and roses, with a little bit of the amber peeking out.

    Base notes: rose

    Throw: medium

    Rating: 3.5 out of 5

  16. In imp: Choward's violet gum.

    Wet: Choward's violet gum.

Drydown: ooooh. I'm still getting the sweet violet scent, but it's developing this lovely fullness that is just yummy.

Top notes: Choward's violet gum, amped up a bit.

Middle notes: Oooh, now it has a vague spiciness around the edges. My nose is STUCK to my wrist right now.

Base notes: A sweetly floral vanilla.

    Throw: Medium.

    Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

  17. In imp: light and soapy - like Irish Spring - with a tiny twist of cedar.

Wet: It's almost a non-scent. I get a vaguely "clean" smell, and that's about it.

Drydown: The Irish Spring scent is coming back.

Top notes: Mostly lily with the other floral notes backing it up - I can tell they're there since it's not a pure lily, but I can't pick the other notes out.

Middle notes: It's gone soapy. :/ Too bad - I don't adore Irish Spring.

Base notes: Irish Spring and Dial!

    Throw: Medium-light.

    Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

  18. In imp: a light, airy scent. It feels expansive when I smell it, which is odd.

Wet: I can barely smell this. White florals?

    Drydown: A musky white floral.

Top notes: lilac and green tea.

Middle notes: a slightly stale lilac.

Base notes: OK, now it's pulling together. I can smell all the various notes.

    Throw: light.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Not my thing, but not bad.

  19. In imp: fresh, dry pears.

    Wet: juicy pears.

    Drydown: lush, juicy pears.

Top notes: a full ripe pear with a light floral note underneath.

Middle notes: a wispy white floral.

Base notes: None! It's gone! wait! It came back! Light rose.

ETA: And it came back again! Hello, juicy pear.

    Throw: light

rating: 2.5 3.5 out of 5. It's pretty, but far too light.

  20. :D I'm going to try and do a review of this at night, so I can report on if it has any effect on my dreams.

In the imp: lavender and dusty herbs. It smells like an herb shop.

Wet: Lemony lavender...like the Yankee Candle, but more refined.

Drydown: Erm, I kinda missed it. :P

Top notes:Soft lemons with a lavender twist.

Middle notes: The lemon gets sweeter, like a lemon cough drop.

Base notes: I probably won't be awake for these, but I suspect it will be mostly lavender. mostly lemongrass.

    Throw (so far): Medium-light.

Rating (so far): 4 out of 5. It's better as a room scent than a perfume, I think.

Rest of the review coming in the morning!

Effect on sleep: no notable effects on dreams, but I did sleep solidly.

  21. In imp: light woody herbal with a white floral twist.

Wet: palmarosa comes right out and overpowers everything else.

Drydown: a little sandalwood struggles mightily to come through, but it's still a palmarosa scent.

Top notes: Rose, violet and palmarosa with an oddly musky undertone.

Middle notes: the violet gets stronger, and the sandalwood starts to make an appearance. The rose is still there, but the palmarosa seems to be fading.

Base notes: rose. *siiiigh* This means it's going to go stale on me, as nice as the initial stages were.

    Throw: medium

Rating: 4 out of 5 (not my thing, but I appreciate the complexity and I would recommend it to floral lovers)

  22. In imp: it's like Perversion (sweet coconut, tonka and leather) with a waft of cigarette smoke (the smell when you inhale - not the sidestream scent) and....Chanel #5 (henceforth referred to as "the cologney note").

Wet: sweet, fresh coconut and tonka.

Drydown: the leathery/tobacco leaf/cologney notes come out to play with the coconut and tonka.

Top notes: tobacco leaf, tonka, coconut and a waft of the cologney note.

Middle notes: sweet leather with the tiniest waft of tobacco leaf. At this stage, if smells almost exactly like Perversion on me.

Base notes: SEXY smoky sweet leather. Again, almost exactly like Perversion. However, Perversion has significantly more throw on me.

    Throw: Medium.

    Rating: 4.5 out of 5

  23. A deceptively sweet orchid vanille with a faint trace of stephanotis.

In imp: Oh oh OH. Honey and vanilla and florals and fruits - it's scrumptious.

Wet: Honeysuckle with a waft of fruit.

Drydown: Oh, this is so gorgeous. More fruityness.

Top notes: Powdery fruit and a deep, true vanilla.

Middle notes: The best baby powder EVER. Lush and true, with a vanilla-y finish.

    Base notes: Baaaaady powder. :P

    Throw: a strong medium.

Overall rating: 5 out of 5.
