  1. The embodiment of Victorian funereal elegance. A delicate sugar-spun vanilla cream cotton, stained by tobacco and incense smoke, Indian musk, and drops of cognac.

Just got my bottle from DD today. I figured that I had heard about this scent enough times on the forum that I could risk buying it unsniffed, and it does have several notes that are great on me. Impressions:

In the bottle: Something STRONG is attacking my nose...it smells really sharp, boozy to the point of crossing over into medicinal. I'm gonna take a stab and say it's the cognac.

Wet: Exactly the same, if anything the medicinal/boozy note amps for the first 10-15 minutes.

Dry: Booziness calms down some and I get a little more vanilla now, but the cognac is still predominant and not playing nicely with my skin.

This smells very much like the Vanilla CT I got (and recently sold), so I guess at least now I know there was cognac alongside the vanilla there and that I should stay away from it from now on. I'll see if it morphs any more later today but for now I'm thinking this one is probably going to end up on my sales page as well. Boo.

  2. In the bottle and wet on my skin, this smelled exactly like a chocolate-covered cherry without the cherry. It's got to be the chocolate/honey mix that's doing that. I adore sweet, foody scents so this is deliciousness to me!

Dry, the chocolate goes just a bit powdery to me and turns into Chocolate Necco Wafer!

I wish this lasted longer because it smells wonderful, but then again I only tested about a drop just in case. I happily give this one a 5/5 and plan to do a much more slathery test later! My first 13 is a smashing success!

  3. In the imp: Wow, this is really green! And I don't mean the color of the oil  although it is a beautiful pale green. I mean, this is one of the few times an oil has actually smelled like a color to me. No florals that I can detect.

Wet: Pine-Sol! Undiluted, chemical, straight from the bottle Pine-Sol. Still no floral anything.

Dry: Pine needles. The chemically smell is gone, but pine is still all I get. This would smell lovely in a candle around Christmas time, but it's not a hit on my skin.

  4. A bawdy, gleefully wicked and unruly scent: Kentucky Bourbon, sugar and a sprig of mint.

In the imp, I got mostly mint and just a hint that there might be some alcohol hiding somewhere.

Wet, FRESH MINT AHOY! If it stayed exactly like this, I would be happy to walk around wafting minty goodness everywhere I went! It's a good, really freshly muddled mint, not a Listerine kind of fake mint. Very nice.

Dry: Sadness. The mint is completely gone and the scent has turned to a vaguely masculine powder. I tried it on DH and he had the same experience with lovely mint and then straight to powder. What a shame.

  5. In the imp: Buttery and sweet

Wet: Sugary, a tiny bit of honey

Dry: OMG pralines! I smell like a praline! :yum: The sweet cakes smell brown-sugary and I never got a hint of wine or even milk. This is absolutely delicious, and I have to seriously refrain from licking my arm. Definite 5/5 for this foody lover!

  6. My first thought when I sniffed my decant was "Apple!" and then "something sweet!" I adore sweet-smelling stuff so I swiped some on. On my skin, this is a sweet citrus scent...not quite orange bubble gum, but almost. No apple at all. It seems like there's a flowery something that keeps trying to peek through, but then it goes back to that sweet orangeness. It is light and bright and has minimal throw, but that's okay because I can totally see myself slathering this one.

I have GOT to get a bottle of this!

  7. I have no idea what dragon's blood is supposed to smell like, but it isn't showing up on me anyway! I'm getting straight honeyed vanilla and it is so so good! I can't stop huffing my wrist! May have to grab a bottle of this one! :wub2:

  8. In the imp, this was, as others have said, medicinal and sharp, but it had a nice citrus tang to it. Wet on my skin, I only smelled licorice and nothing else. It has dried down to Irish Spring soap. It's nice, clean and fresh, but not as interesting as I had hoped. Glad I got to try it though!

  9. Wet it was all COCONUT!

Dry, it turned into more of a COCONUT! and a little floral

For me, this wasn't quite foody but it also wasn't quite suntan oil. I'd classify it somewhere in between. The perfect summer coconut scent! 9 hours after I first applied it, the coconut has faded away but the barely-there floral scent is still going! Love this one, and am so glad I got a bottle!

  10. In the bottle: Totally smells like amber, honey and vanilla.

Wet: I'm getting a Queen Anne chocolate covered cherry vibe going on here (weird chemistry, I blame it on my children :P ), but there's something else that smells SO GOOD that I just can't put my finger on. Maybe it's the vanilla? Maybe it's the honey? Who knows.

Oh thank goodness it's not just me! Chocolate-covered cherries was the first thing I thought of and I haven't been able to get that out of my mind! It's not even the chocolate part, it's the sweet cherry and syrupy stuff inside the chocolate. That's totally what I'm getting from this!

Don't get me wrong, I can totally pick out the actual notes and they are amazing blended together, but my brain won't stop with the candy! It's making me wish it were Christmas so I could go buy a box! I'm hoping this will calm down more, as several reviewers have attested to this being a long-lasting scent. If I can stop thinking I've opened a chocolate-covered cherry and wiped it all over my arm, I'll update this.

I do like the minimal throw on this- it feels like a scent I could put on and happily wear on a plane or in another crowded, enclosed area and not worry about bothering anyone else with it.

  11. This, to me, smelled like someone took Whip out drinking. As inexperienced as my poor little nose is, I could smell the wine, leather, and rose right away. Mmm, sophisticated leathery roses. I love the combo but wish it had lasted longer. The longer I wore it, the more it faded into just soft rose with no other notes coming out. I'll definitely try it again though!

  12. In the imp: Flowery and a teensy bit of lime.

Wet: JASMINE! Might as well be a SN of the stuff, because I'm not getting anything else.

Dry: My skin, the mighty Rose Amper, has beaten the jasmine into nothingness and laughed at my pleas for lotus and lime. It's all rose, all the time.

Also, I was surprised to hear others say that this had such good throw on them. I have to physically touch my nose to my testing spot (back of my left hand where it meets the wrist) to smell anything. Even an inch away, I can barely tell anything's there. This probably means that Muse will sadly be another fast-fader on me.

  13. Apple pencils.

This was the thought that ran through my head after applying Desire and continuing to re-sniff every 15-30 minutes. I never got any rose, vanilla, patchouli, or anything else. First all I could smell was something woody (this would be Mr. Teak) and later on, hints of apple if I inhaled *really* deeply.

So, yeah. Apple pencils. Not the sex-in-a-bottle I was hoping for. It's not bad, it's just...not sexy.

  14. I couldn't completely separate any of the notes on me. I got whiffs of vague citrus-ness and just a general happy/clean/bright scent. I liked it very much, but my nose never did pick out one single thing and nothing in particular amped on me (which is weird, because with FIVE ROSES I figured that would be all I could smell, but I never got any rose at all), just a well-mixed bouquet of scents.

Unfortunately, 2 hours later I couldn't tell I had even put perfume on. It had completely faded that quickly. I liked it while it lasted, so maybe I'll use it as a room scent or keep it mind should I ever get a scent locket.

  15. Sophia is lovely but...strange. When I first applied it, I swear it smelled exactly like sugared lemons. I have *no* idea how that happened, even with the list of notes right in front of me, but there it was. About 10 minutes later, that was completely gone and all I'm getting now is rose rose rose. I like rose, and it loves me, but I already have Whip and Persephone for my rosy needs...maybe I'll keep waiting and see if it changes again. It went from sugary lemons to straight-up roses, so who knows?

  16. I tried searching this topic but the search brought up way too many pages of posts that weren't really what I was looking for, so in case I'm repeating something that's already been asked, I apologize!

My mom wore Vanilla Fields for years and I'm thinking of having her try some BPAL blends that might be similar. They don't have to be exactly like it, but I know that she likes vanilla. I'm already planning to have her try Snake Oil, but are there any good recommendations for something close to VF?

Here's what I found for the notes: Vanilla Fields is an elegant, oriental, woody fragrance. This fragrance is a blend of natural notes from vanilla, jasmine, violet, bergamot, ylang-ylang and mimosa.

    Thanks in advance!

  17. In the imp, this smells like chocolate-covered sugar cookies. With nuts. If I had a smidge less willpower, I would be seriously tempted to drink this stuff.

On me, wet and later when it's dried, it smells like some kind of vanilla-hazelnut coffee. I just want to roll around in this scent and be lazy and decadent. I only wish it lasted longer, but it seems my skin wanted to eat this even more than I did. Just a couple hours later and I can barely still smell it, if my nose is all the way down on my skin.

    Lovely, creamy scent!

  18. Yep, that's exactly what I get. Roses and honey.

I LOVE it! I smell both at the same time, so it's like honey-covered roses. I can't stop sniffing myself when I wear this! I even went back and put more on just so I could get a whiff every time I moved. Mmmm. This was a frimp, and I will soon have to get a bottle! :wub2:

  19. In the bottle and wet on my skin, this was straight-up CINNAMON. Unfortunately, it dried to a mix of cotton balls and cheap deodorant. Not inspiring any amorous feelings in me or the hubby. Oh well.

    ETA:

*Ahem* I spoke too soon, apparently. I did my best to wash this off since I didn't like the way it dried on me. However, the jacket I had been wearing had wonderful-smelling sleeves for at least a week! I loved the way it smelled on my clothes, and wish it had smelled that way on me! Also...even after washing the oil off my skin, this little guy lived up to his name :) That is all.

  20. My very first BPAL order and I generously( ;) ) chose 2 oils for hubby instead of grabbing more for myself. I'm pleased to say my selflessness paid off! I swiped some on his neck and sniffed him as often as he'd let me, even if I interrupted him to do so!

    Wet: Mmmm...crisp, sharp, MANLY

Dry: Cold, dark, still that crispness, it smells sorta ocean-y but in all the right ways. I don't know if he's completely sold on it just yet (though he loves the name!), but this is how I want my husband to smell all the time. Like he's just gotten out of the shower but wouldn't mind getting dirty again! :wub2:

  21. Malevolent, dark and shadowy: sinuous black musk, wet leather and vetiver.

This was one of the imps I chose specifically for my husband to try (I get 4, he gets 2, that's fair, right? ).

Wet, all I got was what I'm guessing is the vetiver. Couldn't pick up any leather at all, which was a bit disappointing. Once dry, it was more like...a man's study. Dark leather chairs, the vague scent of pipe tobacco, very "this is man's territory." Nice, definitely manly, but I think just a bit too old for hubby. I didn't get any "dangerous" vibes from it, just leather-chair comfort. Might pass this along to Dad instead.
