  1. I can't believe this one isn't getting more love. On me, it's a citrus vanilla-musk, soft and creamy. This will be wonderful in the summer time.

Definitely a simple scent - and the first of the RPG line that I have really, really liked!

  2. MOON OF HORSES
One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,

Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.

And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.

And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.

By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.

For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

Grape vines, cinnamon, frankincense, olive leaf, red wine, saffron, stacte, galbanum, costus root, smoke, and brimstone.

This is a really interesting scent. This is fresh out of the mail, so my opinions MAY change. But!

In the bottle, I smell mostly grapes and wine. When this is applied to the skin though, the first scent I can only describe as vegetal. Not green, like grasses or herbs, but green like the BPAL scents with the tomato notes in them. My nose detects easily the olives and the smoke/brimstone scent, but I can't pick out any of the other scents individual. Cinnamon fearers, rest easy; I cannot smell cinnamon in this a bit and it does not give me a skin reaction.

Overall, I don't know if I really like this or not. It is certainly an interesting scent. Try this if you like the earthy scents.

  3. Oh, sigh sigh sigh.

This has lemon in it - I don't think it's lemon grass, but lemon balm. It's the sweet citrusy lemon that I amp to high heavens. When I first put this on my wrist, I get a touch - a TOUCH - of lavender and herbs greens until it is all overwhelmed by the evil and insidious lemon. As it dries down, I get a bit of the rose, but then it is just lemony rose.

    cries.

  4. Am I smelling the same perfume? I get a ton of leather, a touch of opium and almost no rose at all. I think this one might need to settle so that the astringent edge comes off the leather note.

ETA: On second wearing, this is more rosy, less astringent. It is a dark and evil rose. I am not a huge fan of rose scents, but I've been getting into them more lately if they are grounded by something else. I think that the opium here ground the rose nicely so that it does not overwhelm. Definitely a sexy, grown up scent.

  5. This, for me, is a hybrid between the chinese new year scents and the atomic luau scents. There is definitely a citrus fruit medley in this - melon for sure, but I thought perhaps lychee as well? and maybe peach? - I don't get any lemon from this, thankfully, since lemon is a note that overpowers all on my skin. No orange either. The fruitiness is complimented by a grassy, minty note. This is not the mint note from the Yule blends, but more of a "true" mint - the smell of fresh herbs. This will definitely be in rotation for the summer months.

  6. This is sweet, resinous perfection. I do not get any kind of chemical smell from this at all, on my skin. I think the term "butter" is a misnomer, as there is no buttery note in this. If anything, I smell opium and amber - probably a dark amber. There are some faint hints of spices, but I couldn't tell you with any certainty what those spices are. They are all rolled into the opium to make one delicious, sensuous, amazing, grown up scent. So much awesomeness.

    Good throw and longevity.

  7. WORM MOON
Do not smirk as a hearse goes by,
For you may be the next to die.
They wrap you up in a big white sheet
And throw you down six feet deep.
They put you in a big black box,
And cover you up with dirt and rocks.

All goes well for a week or two,
Then things start changing; all is new.
The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out,
The worms play pinochle on your snout.

A big green worm with rolling eyes,
Crawls in your stomach and out your eyes.
Til your blood turns mossy green
And oozes out like Devonshire cream.

Worm Moon marks the season of rains, when the worms scuttle forth, aerating the earth with their movements and enriching the soil by digesting waste in organic material, which creates organic fertilizer.

This is a melding of Victorian Grotesquery and springtime fecundity: mold-crusted dirt, decomposing organic matter, coffin wood, drooping funeral flowers, congealed blood, gloomy lunar oils, and cuckoo flower with something moist lurking underneath.

This smells amazingly like dirt; moist, loamy dirt just after the rain. This is perfectly appropriate for Worm Moon. I'm not sure I want to smell like damp dirt, but I'm amazing at Beth's skill in capturing just what it smells like! It makes me imagine mounds of just dug up soil in a graveyard.

    Oddly, I don't dislike it.

Low throw, and it dries down to something a little more wearable. Same notes, but slightly less dirty and more just ... earthy. Some of the floarls come out, with a touch of a metallic edge. The drydown reminds me of the darker, more "adult" florals in the BPAL collection.

    Least helpful first review ever.

    ENLIGHTENMENT OF THE COURTESAN JIGOKUDAYU

Silken coconut, angelica, soft golden incense, tiare, carnation, and Asian pear.

This is very, very sweet both in the bottle and wet on my skin. If I didn't know the notes, I would have thought that cream and sweet pea were elements in the blend. It has a very sweet, creamy feel to it. I think that the sweetness comes from the fruit in it and maybe the coconut. This does not smell at all like suntan lotion to me, so maybe "silken coconut" is different from regular old coconut? Sadly, I do not get a strong carnation or tiare smell, which is too bad as they are my favorite note. Instead, everything blends together into ... sweetness. This, to me, is in the same scent family as Agape and blends like it. Pretty and quite girly.

As it dries down, the scent does not really morph. Low throw.

LORD TEISHIN WITH A DEMON BEHIND A SCREEN

Blood red musk, Spanish mandarin, candied red fruits, Chinese geranium, red pepper, and effervescent tangerine pulp.

This is really interesting... it is a kind of peppery, effervescent citrus. The tangerine note from BPAL is always kind of sparkling to me, and this is no exception. The geranium and the red pepper are adding the spicy note that co-dominates this blend. Red musk is usually a little so-so on me, and I don't find this blend particularly heavy on the red musk. The muskiness blends in with the other notes.

On the dry down, the spicy-musky scent takes over this blend and I lose the citrus entirely. This does not surprise me, as citrus rarely sticks with me.

Really interesting. I like this, but I think if I wore it next to me face it would give me a headache as it has quite the powerful throw.

  10. Mmmmmmm, tobacco flower, how I love you. I can always pick it out in any blend that has it, and here it is particularly present. It blends seamlessly with the vanilla. This is not particularly woody or heavy on the patchouli. On me, it is all vanilla and tobacco flower. :wub2: :wub2: :wub2: This is a heavy, sexy, very adult perfume and I love it.

  11. (I don't see a topic for this anywhere - if there is, mods delete!)

This does not resemble the released version of Dreadful Lies in the slightest. The predominant note (to my nose) is the light resinous note that is present in Ra and Cat Allingham. In fact, of the bottles in my collection, I think this most closely resembles Ra, but without any of the spices. That sweet, resinous note is tempered with something else - I smell a kind of spicy green, which might be tagetes (a note in the released formulation). The throw is very, very low and it seems to fade quickly. That being said, it's actually quite a pretty scent if you enjoy scents in this family.

  12. Anthesteria, one of the four central feasts of Dionysus, is held for three days during the month of Anthesterion-- the time of blooming. It is a celebration of the birth of spring, expressed symbolically though the ceremonial opening of the pithoi containing the previous year’s vintage. A time of joy and drunkenness, it is both a celebration of earth’s renewal and springtime’s bright passions and a festival of the dead. During the three nights of Anthesteria, the ghosts of our ancestors roam the streets. This commemoration of death and rebirth, passion and springtime was one of the few, precious moments when all were equal in the Hellenic world; during Anthesteria, man, woman, and child, free man and slave, human and spirit were all unified under the auspices of Nature’s great cycle.

Dénthis wine and Bibline grape, with honey and a touch of thyme and oregano.

For me, this is mostly white wine. It seems like the same wine scent from Horreur Sympathique and from Bon Vivant. I also get some sticky sweet honey as well. No thyme or oregano to speak of. There is almost a tropical feel to this scent - I get an almost quince like effect from the wine and honey. Pretty!

  13. I would agree that Metal Rabbit and Metal Tiger are very similar, although I think I prefer Metal Rabbit. Metal Rabbit has a distinctly present tangerine note that Metal Tiger is missing. Metal Tiger smells mostly like bergamot on me. Metal Rabbit is very different from Earth Rat (mostly melon) and Fire Pig (all lychee). I haven't tried Earth Ox, so I can't compare.

    I love this, so I'm happy. :)

  14. On me, this is mostly vanilla and cotton, achingly similar to antique lace ... but then there is something seriously unpleasant in there. I agree with the poster who said it's kind of a grape-y, wine like scent. I don't like the smell so much when it is right up next to my nose. I think I'll let this settle and age and then re-evaluate.

  15. This smells like how Snake Oil SHOULD smell like (or, at least how I imagined it would smell!) While Snake Oil is a bit meh on me, WILF is this rich, marvelous vanilla/champaca/musk. I do not get any mint or chocolate (usually a death note for me). It's like the love child of Panther Moon and Snake Charmer on me. Marvelous!

  16. I would agree with the comparisons to Lambs-Wool, although on me this is less a potpourri scent than Lambs-Wool. To me this is fruit rounded out by the sweetness of honey. Lately honey has been going all sour and funky on my skin, but thankfully this must have whatever the "good" honey is because that does not happen. Instead, I get a rich, golden, apple-y, beeswaxy scent. I'm so glad my BF went out of his way to find someone to pick this up and surprise me with!

  17. The Full Moon that shines over the frost-rimed heart of winter. Traditional lunar oils combined with glittering snow flowers, soft breezes and frozen ferns.

This is for the 2010 version.

On me this is a strong wood and mint perfume. Usually mint plays pretty nice with me, but if anything as I wore this longer, the mint smelled stronger and stronger until I had a feeling of wearing some kind of flu medication. The boyfriend asked me to wash it off.

    Sad.

  18. I really love this! On me, it is incense-y/dark musky blend. There is a bit of sharpness if I put it close to my nose, but i love the scent of it as it wafts around me. I found the dry down to be exceptionally like - mostly wood with a touch of spice. Low throw on the dry down, I think I'd have to bring a touch with me to spread on myself throughout the day.

  19. I am looking for rose recommendations! I could never really wear rose before as it gave me a headache, but since I've gone off of my birth control medication, either it smells differently on my skin or I am not perceiving the scent the same way. In either case, I skin tested some rose-y imps and .... I liked them! I still think I prefer blends that do not have rose as the dominant note, but it's okay if it is a present note. Recent blends I've liked with rose include:

    Othello

    The Grindhouse

    Joyful Moon

    Champagne and Roses

I don't have much other rose stuff laying around because I didn't like it. Can anyone suggest other rose blends where the rose is an important note, but it isn't the dominant note? And I think I might like it better when it is not combined with other florals....

  20. This scent is evennmore beautiful than I thought it would be. I concur with previous reviewers - definitely amber (it smells like Egyptian amber, which is my favorite kind), spices (perhaps cardamom and nutmeg? definitely no cinnamon) and incense on me. There is a sharpness right as it goes on which I identify as myrrh but it goes away almost immediately. I don't smell any "fruit" notes in this, unless there is a touch of wine (which I identify differently than a fruity scent). This is a beautiful scent that is a summer/fall wear for me. I love it, and I'm happy I found a bottle!
