    Searching for the Perfect Vanilla?

Ooh, this sounds very similar to Delight & Consternation. It was essentially a vanilla lemon tart to me. It doesn't have the herbal aspect but should be pretty close. Rigorous Love could fit as well. It has a bit more complexity than the blend you're describing, with coconut, anise and orchid, but it also has a soft lemongrass. Thank you, I'll check both of those out.

    Searching for the Perfect Vanilla?

I fell in love with the vanilla scent in Wen Sixthirteen. It's described as "lemon rosemary vanilla". To me it smells like a slightly warm/bakery vanilla, with a hint of herb and lemon. It comes across almost more like lemongrass than full on lip puckering lemon. I went through many of my bpal's trying to find something similar, but since I normally dislike lemon scents I don't have anything close. Can anyone make a recommendation for scents?

    The Girl

Ah, this is an out of the park smash hit! The halloween scents have been such a roller coaster of surprises. I'm always searching for pale+floral that doesn't turn my skin into a flower shop and give me a headache. So I thought I'd try this one, even though I had low expectation. But wow, this is really nice. None of the florals in this amp too much, and the musk doesn't turn nasty at all. This blends into a really nice powder, slight pale musk, and some captivating creepy flowers. I've tried most of these notes in other blends with no success, but somehow everything here is just the right blend to give off a really nice scent without being overwhelming. When I first put The Girl on, it seemed pretty flat, just kind of a nice, wounded innocent kind of smell. But then it really started to swell and get more complex. This has kind of a sad quality to it, but it remains very clear. After about 6 hours it started to lose some of the complexity, and powdered out into a very soft sweet scent. I could go for a couple bottles of this!

I'm so jealous of the people who get fur from this! This was the only halloween scent I was dead set on getting, based on the description it sounded so awesome. I was expecting this to smell like damp wolf fur, with coldness and slightly sweet/smoky parts to it. But on my skin this just kind of goes "bleh". I'm going to give it a few more tries, because it's not bad, per say, I was just really hopeful for something specific from this and it kind of let me down. It smells like gender neutral musk, kind of sweet, and golden-yellow amber resin. Nothing really sticks out, nothing really gives me any mental images, its just an overall decent everyday scent that isn't too masculine or too feminine.

I didn't expect this one to agree with my skin, considering the floral part in this. But on my skin, for the first hour or so, it was mainly earthy/wood/roots. Similar to Penny Dreadful in that it smelled like roots, dirt, and leaf liter over some perfume. However this is very soft, and there isn't much of that spicy ting that PD has. After a while the white musk and the flowers in this kind of grew and balanced it out into a really nice, slightly different smelling feminine scent. I didn't pick up any juniper, and this didn't really come across as foody to me. Overall it's nice, but I'm not really sure if I like it a lot, or just kind of like it. It's definitely a complex scent, and I look forward to wearing this several times to really get a good feel for it. It invokes the feeling of walking in a well lit wooded area on a cool day, smelling some of the late blooming flowering plants as you crush them underfoot.

From this I get cotton candy/sugar and buttery cream, I don't really get any cotton smell from this. To me it smelled exactly like cotton candy and cream, but my boyfriend said it smelled like butterscotch. Cream scents can go buttery on me, but this was really pleasant and foody- gorgeous. While it has the feeling of sweetness and girlishness, this scent is quite grown up and demure. It's a little sweeter than something I would normally wear but it's really nice to have around for days when you need something different. It had reasonable lasting power but it doesn't stay very strong.

    Thirteen (13): July 2007

In the bottle, this smelled so gross to me. So I looked up the notes in this and decided to give it a chance, with much success. Fresh on my skin, on the left wrist it's coco and liquor, with some ginger in there to give it dimension. On the right wrist, it's smooth, creamy chocolate and vanilla. This one didn't change much from start to finish, it stayed coco liquor and and something that must be a mix of honey, peach, and clove. On the right it's nearly gone, and leaving behind some faint incense type vibes. I got several complements today that I smelled "yummy" and I craved chocolate all day. I really like this, even though I wouldn't wear it everyday.

    The Masque

This was a frimp I got from a very nice lady. Smelling this in the imp, I didn't even want to try it, since all I could pick up were rose, which I amp strongly, and clove, which I don't really like (having goth friends smoke clove cigarettes around you constantly can do this). But I was persuaded to give it a go, and I'm glad I did. This smells sort of like Samhain in that it has clove, mixed with sweet incense like spice. However, I think the carnation in this gives it a tiny bit of a floral backbone, it kind of softens things out and gives the other scents something to stand on. I get clove, rose, some amber, some incense, some sweetened sappy honey, and carnation. Overall this just blends down into a really beautiful scent, where no one thing really stands out, but everything contributes to a slightly spicy, slightly naturally sweet, clear smell. This evokes the color burnt orange to me, and makes me think of warm fall days around Halloween, when mischief is in the air, and it's sometimes still hot enough to play around outside at dusk. I think this really does a great job of capturing the spirit of The Masque, now if only I had more...

    The Deep Ones

In the imp, and just applied to my skin, this smelled very "clean", like Cthulhu, and fresh. Sort of like walking into a perfectly clean house. It also smelled heavily of juniper berries, which is a scent I always feel gets lost in blends with juniper in it. I really loved this, and since it was so light, I proceeded to slather myself in it. I work sitting at a desk all day, and as the oil warmed up with my body this got so overwhelmingly powerful I ended up going to the bathroom and scrubbing my skin to get this off. It smells incredible, like salt water, clean, fresh air, and juniper berries, but it's one of the oils that you can apply very lightly and still get a big impact from. I really wish I had detergent and cleaning spray scented with this, it's so fresh and bright. Just wonderful!

    Megaera

At first this reminds me a bit of Titania, in that it has a very crisp, fresh, juicy fruit smell, although I get mainly grapefruit tartness at first. This does morph between slightly spicy, almost like red hots, fruit, and something I can only attribute to the combination of the black amber and bergamot which smells like of musky and earthy. Overall there are other blends that have similar scents as this that I like better, as this almost feels like three scents mixed together, just too much going on. I'll keep this one around though, because I'd love to give this another go after it's aged a little while.

    Depraved

I tend to really like patchouli and it tends to like me back, but the kind in this just doesn't do it for me. It smells like rancid body odor, slathered in apricot. I think this one was just too simple to me, no blending of scents going on. It was just a fight between patchouli and apricot, and no matter who won, my nose lost.

    Haloes

Overall this smells quite "perfumy" on me. I really get the sharpness of the white ginger, mixed with apricot. Vanilla tends to go buttery on me, but this one doesn't stray too far, and the amber and vanilla blend really well. The oak and lily of the valley don't really make much of an appearance here, that I can tell. And I have no idea what tonka smells like, but it's listen in several of the scents I like, so I guess whatever it is agrees with me. This scent blends really well on my skin, so after an hour or so, I don't get so much notes, as just an overall good smelling perfume. I really like wearing this, especially when I want something that smells grown-up and womanly, without wanting to wear something floral. It smells glowy amber yellow, delicate and developed.

    Samhain

2008 version, decant This is the quintessential autumn smell, to me. My boyfriend and I both adore wearing this. On him it's mainly pumpkin with sweet clove and spice, and I can faintly pick up a woody smell in the background, but the patchouli is invisible unless you really seek it out. On me I get apple cider, earthy patchouli/wood, and a little bit of pumpkin, but not like pumpkin pie, more like the smell of the pulp as you scrape out your jack o'lantern. I'll be seeking out every version of this scent, to see all the variances of this, it's just so spectacularly cozy and warm. It has just the right amount of everything to make a perfect fall scent.

    Baneberry

Wet on the skin this smelled very dark green, like dripping wet fern leaves, but with a "clean" smell that bordered on Irish Spring soap smell, with a tiny hint of blackberry juice. After it had dried down a bit, the clean/soap smell faded in and out amidst the berry scent. I think the description of this is really accurate, it does have lots of dark green leafy smell, mixed with herbals and berries. This scent was different than most BPAL scent I tried in that I put a tiny amount of this on and it just wafted all around me, scenting the room and myself. I don't know that I would use a bottle of this, but it has a really fresh scent, good for the rainy/hot weather we're having right now.

    Lady Una

Lady Una did weird things to me today. I was feeling kind of flighty, and I had just gotten an imp sized decant of this in the mail, so I decided to give it a go. This was my first Neil Gaiman scent, and I was very excited. Fresh on my skin, I definitely get the honey musk, and the vanilla. The honey musk smells exactly like sweet, light honey + musk, and the vanilla is very smooth and creamy, it doesn't go "waxy" at all, which some vanillas do on me. I can't tell if it's the green tea leaf or the "fae spices" that I'm picking up on, but there is some kind of very faintly ethreal, sweet scent going on in the background. The blackberry leaf is very far away, like smelling blackberries growing from across a field. Honestly, I was already working myself up to get a bottle, just five minutes in. It smells lush, melancholy, mystical, and beautiful. Then it turned into buttered popcorn. Sweetened gourmet popcorn with fresh butter and a vanilla creme drizzle, but popcorn none the less. I'm assuming the honey musk in this, which is the strongest note to me, and the green tea leaf morphed, making it smell this way. But something about this still makes me want a bottle. I guess I'm going to have to give this one several more tries. If this is any indication, the Gaiman scents are as complex and weird as the stories.

    Phobos

I never really expected to like Phobos, I hate nearly all things lemon with a passion, except for fresh lemons themselves. I received this imp, and gave it a go, just for the sake of having tried it. And it is lemon all the way. I get a vague sense of lemongrass, slightly green and fresh, underneath the overpowering lemon verbena. It's also a little "dry" smelling. But there is no way this is ever going to be for me. The best way I found to wear this is to lightly layer it under Swank, letting the juicy pomegranate temper the lemon scent a little. This way it smells like I happened to spill some mixed drink concoction on me. If you like/love sweet lemon scents I think you'd really love this, it's very accurate to it's description.

    Dana O'Shee

I agree that the honey in this scent is very light, and blossom scented. At first this does smell of cherried almond cakes, and it goes through a phase where it's kind of too cherry scented for me (I really detest anything cherry). But after a while this mellows into a very simple, but yummy scent. On me this smells like oatmeal, and very creamy milk, with a hint of honey, kind of like the sweetened honey spread we put on biscuits in the South. I got an imp of Dana O'Shee and Alice, not really expecting to like either one. The honey in Alice seems much more potent and sickly sweet than it does it Dana O'Shee. This is really a sleeper hit, it kind of quietly grows on you the more you wear it. It invokes images of softness and sweetness. This seems like a great scent to wear when you want to smell nice, but don't want anything that will overpower, or stand out too much.

    Delight

I love frangipani, so I couldn't wait to try this one. At first this smelled very green and astringent, with the faintest hint of fresh, young rose. After a little while I picked up a faint trace of powdery franipani, and the tuberose was very nice. Both of these were overwhelmed by the rose, however. Overall nothing in this scent works with me. I never really picked up any particular scent in this, it just turned into a jumbled mess of way too strong floral. I never smelled anything even remotely jasmine in this, and the rose overpowered any frangipani I get.

    The Candy Butcher 2006

I woe the fact that I only have a small amount of this. Hands down this is one of the best things I have ever smelled in my life. In the beginning it does smell kind of like the "after-chocolate" smell a candy bar wrapper or something might have, not full on chocolate bar, but a hint of creamy chocolate left over in a glass. It's very mellow, and yet very strong, throw wise. After a while it goes very creamy. I get mainly sweetened, slightly spiced, chocolate cream. I cannot figure out what in this makes it smell spiced, not hot spice, but more like the spicy smell in some exotic chocolate bar. The cream smell is very soft and decadent, it does smell like warm half and half! At this point I'm lucky if I can drag my nose away from my wrist to function, this is so drop dead gorgeous. I don't get any nuttiness, and no plasticy breakdown. Overall, on me, this has great lasting power, and is pretty strong compared to some other BPAL I've tried. I'll always be on the hunt for this one, I suppose, it's so very lovely.

    Lady MacBeth

For the first hour on my skin this was Dimetapp Children's Chewables. Nasty fake grape powder, I can see where people got "chalky vitamins". I tried really hard with this scent to get the wine, berry, herby smells described. I could pick up a faint hint of the soured wine, and a tiny bit of the thyme with the berries, but as a whole this just smells like medicine to me, and not in a pleasant way. I wanted to like this one so much

    Goblin

The patchouli in Goblin comes across as slightly "dirty" to me. But I prefer my patchouli to be a little gritty/dirty so I really like it in this. The patchouli and the husky coconut really blend perfectly and makes this blend really smooth on me. One second I'll smell all patchouli, then the coconut kind of whispers in and the benzoin adds a little bit of depth. Goblin isn't a very complex scent, but it has a beautiful meld that keeps this scent really interesting. My mom and my boyfriend both are pretty anti-patchouli, but they both agreed this is not too overpowering, and I didn't smell like a dirty hippy, lol. I think this could be a go-to scent for people who like patchouli, but find it can be overwhelming. Also: one day I forgot I had sprayed perfume on, and applied some Goblin, and oh my goodness it was so awesome! The notes in the perfume were: pineapple, hibiscus, and something slightly astringent. The fruit/floral combo worked really well to lift the heavy patchouli/coconut, and it made a really nice, light summer-day scent.

    Swank

In the bottle and wet on my skin this smells like ripe, juicy pomegranate. I don't really pick up any alcohol or boozy notes in this. After it's dried down a bit, it smells like pomegranate body spray, kind of "average" smelling. The longer it sits on my skin, the more tempered it becomes, changing from almost cheap smelling to very lovely and full, a mix of sweet and tart fruity (like pomegranate and white grape, oddly enough) and and a tiny smidgen of strawberry vodka. I would wear this if I were going out for happy hour drinks, or maybe on a night when someone's having a laid-back get together. But it's just not spectacular on my skin, sadly.

    Titania

This will be the first full size bottle I order from BPAL, as this scent is very close to perfect on me. Wet on my skin, this smells a little like pear candy, and sweet pea. Once this drys down, it smells very soft, sweet. It does smell like fruit, but in a very gentle way, no jams or candy scents on me at this stage. The white grape gives this a clean, juicy smell. It also has a very passive floral fragrance. I don't like flowery smells, but this one kind of wafts in and out, and only amplifies the crisp, fresh fruit smell I get. Right now, when most days it's 100 degrees or more, I love how cooling and refreshing this scent is, but I can also see myself loving this in the winter, as it does have a "white" and cold smell to it. The only problem is I have to reapply it very often, but it's worth it, as this smells so great on my skin. *edit* Just wanted to edit to add that this scent is my signature scent. It smells exactly how I want to smell and it blends so beautifully with my natural scent that it's hard to even wear some of my other oils. It also ages beautifully, my imp is over 6 years old and it is much more blended and mellow than a fresh bottle. I would say with time the floral bouquet gains some complexity and the scent becomes more grown-up.

    Smut

Wet on my skin, this smelled to me like chocolate cherry cordials! It's very deep, rich, incense-like/smoky chocolate, with wisps of very sugared cherries. After it had been on a my skin a few hours, I found that this alternated between lightly foody, to more perfume-esque, similar to what I remember my grandmother's perfume smelling like when I was younger. This scent doesn't meld lightly into my space, it grabs you by the face and says "Hey look at me! Tell me I smell good!" I would definitely grab for this on nights I'm feeling sexy and slightly dangerous.
