  1. Well, I have been grouchy and moody all day long, probably caused by not enough sleep the past two nights, and disappointment over cancelled plans, so I was really not in the mood to like anything this evening, but I came home to a BPAL box and thought, well, maybe this day's not a total loss. I don't know how, but BPAL always comes when I feel the worst, hooray for BPAL. Lessee, here, what did I order? OH! Two, Five & Seven! Smart me, I have been wanting a rose!

And then it smelled just exactly like Robitussin cough syrup with a dash of Mr. Clean floor cleaner. :P

Which much intensified my grouchiness. Fine, not my day, but getting on with it, I go out on the balcony to water the plants and it occurs to me after a few minutes how good my rose geraniums smell. Must be because it recently rained. Really nice! They're really very rosey ... except I came back in the apartment and realized it wasn't my rose geraniums, it was Two, Five, and Seven. The miraculous BPAL morph took place within about 20 minutes and enveloped me in green grass and rose after rose after rose.

    I love Beth.

  2. So, yes, sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere.  :D  Searches for "butch" and "picking up the ladies" didn't render anything.  :P

I'm one of those women who comes across as neither butch nor femme, so I'm trying to give myself a bit of "pheramone" to make heads turn when I walk by.  :D  I was thinking something slightly musky, maybe a bit spicy, that could give me a waft of power and sexiness.  Just don't want to smell too guy, since attracting heterosexual women would make things even more odd.

...pretty much anything that makes you want to pick yourself up, I guess.  *laughs*

I think Golden Priapus fits that mold - also Queen of Sheba. You might try Come to Me. Although that may be fresher than what you want, it's very slightly musky and has a pheromone quality to it - but I think all Beth's scents do, so I'm prejudiced. I can't think of any others right now - I'm fairly heavy into femmy perfume. Here's hoping you get some more answers! It's an interesting question.

  3. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this one, since I've amassed three bottles of it. I love it, and I get compliments even from "straights" on it -- I can wear it to work!

    Yes, green floral.

As to what florals, it's amusing to see everyone smelling one thing and another, from jasmine to honeysuckle to hyacinth. I have no idea what's in there, to tell you the truth. I don't get jasmine. I get a melange of bulb flowers (tulips, daffodils, hyacinths) daisies, and grass, some herbs, and I swear I caught a whiff of freshly turned earth. I'm guessing a rose or two. One of its several facets is a tad bit soapy, and I love that bit of clean smell, whatever it is.

It wears really well - I get about 8 hours from it - with quite good throw.

  4. Has anyone had a strange reaction to Magus?

I tried it out yesterday and whenever I sniffed it it made my mouth water - but no in the good way. I got a bitter taste in my mouth that I can't really describe. The overwhelming smell from the oil was nutty, a bitter nuttiness. As it faded I got the other notes, sandalwood, cedar, and frankincense I think and under the nutty smell they smelled quite good. I am temporarily blaming the reaction on high john essence or galangel because I have never come in contact with them before.

Can anyone give me a description of what high john or galangel is supposed to smell like? I'd likt to try and track down which one of these babies did this so I can try to avoid it in the future.

    Thanks!

I get that nasty taste in my mouth from frankincense, and cedar gives me the taste in my mouth, nausea, and a headache.

I found this about galangal: "The root contains a volatile oil, resin, galangol, kaempferid, galangin and alpinin, starch, etc. The active principles are the volatile oil and acrid resin."

Resins are incense. So there's something those elements have in common - they're resinous.

  5. The Ides of March smells like wildflowers in lush green grass -- a perfect Spring scent! It lasts well, too.

ETA: You have to be old to remember this - anybody remember the original Herbal Essence shampoo? It's along those lines, to me. Which is a really good thing. It's very clean and refreshing to my nose.

  6. Absolutely stunningly fucking beautiful. Stars like diamonds in a black velvet sky. A religious experience, like the Goddess just manifested in front of your face.

Somehow high and pure and deep at the same time. In the vein of Moon Rose, but more.

If you don't like florals and you don't like rose and you don't like jasmine and you don't like musk -- get this. If it doesn't change your mind, nothing will.

  7. I love iris/orris - and it's usually described as elegant, chilly, distant. Black Pearl takes iris to the beach and puts it behind the ear of a smiling Polynesian girl in a bikini. Brilliant!

Sweet, tropical, I get a pineapple or galanga smell in the top notes (which I think is the iris/hazlenut weaving together) - it does smell round and silky - the scent has equal depth and range.

It's scrumptious. It's all I can do not to put my nose in my shirt so I can huff it.

Gotta have a big bottle ...

ETA: It's lasted 10 hours so far, with good throw, too.

  8. Oh wow. Let's see if I can review this w/o blushing or giving TMI.  :D This is another one I gave Brian for Yule, and I begged him to try it first. I immediately squealed, "It's 'O' for boys!" And it is. Vanilla/amber sex in a bottle, with a touch of juniper to be slightly more masculine than O. This should be a Voodoo blend, it works so well. Allow me to suggest slathering it on a boy of your choice--from neck to priapus--and just *see* what happens.  :P  :D

    What she said! :D

I used this to train my sweetie to wearing scent. He asks for it now if he doesn't see it, and if he does, he hands it to me to put on him. Because he knows he's gonna get jumped but good. :D

I do think of it as Snake Oil for men. It's a nice compliment as a His scent to Her Snake Oil, too.

  9. I like the way Ultraviolet said it, best:

... this blend would serve well the wearer who wants a light, fresh, clean but feminine surprise waiting for her partner behind her ear, or in the nape of her neck.

    :P

The boy even liked it smelling it straight from the imp! and he doesn't like anything!

  10. I'm amazed to read about how it's so very masculine. I put it on the boy and it turned really, really floral on him. Beautiful, warm, rich, and very female.

I'm going to try it on him again soon and we'll see.

    ADDED April 15:

It turns very sweet and very flowery on my boy, almost immediately. He can't wear it.

    I haven't tried yet.

  11. Marty, if you're quite serious about there being even the vaguest possibility of dying from perfume oils, I think you'd better not wear any, don't you? Seems like truly playing with fire ...

Cinnamon and other skin irritants can sometimes be managed by wearing lotion under your BPAL - or by diluting your BPAL to make a cologne spray. Often, too, if you just wait a bit, a welt raised by cinnamon will go away on its own. I know my Snake Oil stings me when I put it on right after an exfoliating shower, but the sting goes away in just a few minutes.

That's a surface irritation, though, not an allergic reaction.

I would not take a chance on a severe histamine reaction.

Have you tried Madini oils? http://madini.com/

They have some nice single notes ...

I doubt that Beth would list all her ingredients. No perfumer does that.

  12. Bliss.

It feels like walking on the boardwalk by the beach on a spring day, before the tourists have come, and while it's sunny but still cool outside. Or like how you can smell the air change if you drive down 95 from DC to Virginia Beach - all of a sudden the air jumps to life - it's cleaner, crisper, lightly sea scented.

Very soothing, very refreshing, very Ocean Mother. Was it Pekeana who said it's like floating on your back on a lake? Exactly that. Weightless, carefree. And what RHM said - "a very soothing effect on the emotional body and an uplifting effect on the spiritual body."

I can't believe what a powerful effect Beth's aquatics have on me! I tried one out of casual interest and now I'm compelled to collect them all.

  13. Angel's breath. Deliriously beautiful.

I get gardenia, narcissus, stephanotis, apple blossom, ivy, a touch of coconut (although I had to look for it), and, overwhelmingly, yes, snow cream, that ice cream made from snow. Maggie Moo's Udderly Cream ice cream, maybe - with flowers on top. It's also ozonic - there's a fresh rain/snow/clean air after a storm smell. A deliciously cool, clean, fragrant, floral breeze.

    I'm delighted by this.

  14. I've had this imp so long, I can't remember who I got it from ... why I waited until just now to try it, I don't know. But I'm so glad I finally did!

I don't get citrus at all, and it's not particularly soft on me. It's animalic in a huge way, and very potent. Just two swipes from the imp and it's really asserting itself - which is good, because I really want to smell it.

I get "smokey" and there is something just slightly bitter/astringent that's very appealing, hovering high above a resinous base - that makes me think of old trees and piles of autumn leaves. I feel like I can almost smell the exact point at which the musk and the amber combine, and that nexus is intoxicating.

This is like Velvet, but more. I like it extremely. The picture I get is sleeping naked, wrapped up in animal pelts, in a deep, old forest - which, to me, would be bliss.

Oh my god, would this be good on a man. Whew ... :P

A side note: My cat hates it. :D "catbane" He jumped on my lap, sniffed, sneezed, looked indignant, and jumped violently down.

    Well, fine. Be that way.

P.S. Hours later ... the drydown does go to baby powder - it's the musk. But it's lovely. Different than the earlier stages, but absolutely lovely, with that touch of amber.

    A keeper, definitely.
