I love this one, too. It's rich and heady and wears well. I do put it in the same sort of family as Snake Oil - which I wear nearly every day. Am considering a big bottle purchase.

Galangal smells like crushed pine needles, with whiffs of cinnamon and mild ginger. clicky "Just had your first taste of Tom Kha Gai and your senses are still reeling from the exotic citrus flavor of something that clearly was not a fruit? Did you bite into something so exciting and pleasant that you thought about forgetting the main course and simply ordering more soup? The “kha” in that soup is a fantastic member of the ginger family called galanga or galangal." I believe this is the pineapple/mango/orange smell we're getting. Hyssop, a member of the mint family, smells a little like fresh, crushed rosemary - Fresh, earthy, fruity, woody, slightly sweet. Spikenard is in the same family is valerian, and is said to be effective for tension, stress, migraine, nervous indigestion and insomnia. It's characteristics are heavy, sweet-woody, spicy-animal odor reminiscent of valerian, ginger, cardomom, atlas cedarwood oils, with a flavor that is warm-spicy, rootlike in sweetness, somewhat pinewood like and slightly bitter-burning, powerful. Frankincense is one of the tree oils that can really calm and soothe the whole body and mind. It eases all the aches and pains, clears the lungs and acts as a skin tonic. It is fresh, woody, balsamic, slightly spicy and fruity. This oil blend is a blessing in a bottle, and the longer I wear it, the more I like it. I'm going to sleep in it tonight and see how I feel in the morning. For now, I have it slathered on each wrist and forearm, and I've been putting my nose between my wrists and breathing in deeply. Its scent is delicious and its effect is profoundly calming.

The best of its type of BPAL scent, IMO. And you know that's saying a lot.

    Szepasszony

I love this fiercely. I've been wearing snuggle on the couch in a blankie scents for awhile now, and this sweeps the cobwebs out of your brain and lifts your spirit slam up out of the dumps. Whale watches. Rain and sea spray in your face. Wet daffodils and the silvery sun sparkling on water in the early morning in spring. Dazzling and pristine. A high, clear, sustained silver-green note from Pan's flute. Unearthly, divine. A phenomenal aquatic. If you think you don't like aquatics, based on the ones available commercially (Escape comes to mind, for example), try this. It will rock your world. This is what a water scent should be. If Sea of Glass is even better, well, wow. I can't wait to try it. This will be a miracle in the nasty heat of summer. Definitely a good one to make a body spray from and keep in the refrigerator for all over spritzing when it's 101 and 100 percent humidity. It will feel like you've died and gone straight to heaven. I'm ordering 10ml this minute. ADDED April 6: I mixed it into a bottle of 1 part jojoba oil and 1 part rosehips oil - to taste, so to speak, and used it after a bath tonight. It's all over me, head to toe, and it feels and smells just deliciously, mouthwateringly like cool, clean, water. This is going to be really great in the heat of summer. I would love to make a body powder with it. It's sublime.

I get tea right up front, which delights me - then gladiola, rose, and gardenia, in just about that order - then amber, and the patchouli base just gives enough earth for the florals to grow in and to keep the flowers from becoming too "precious." It's beautiful. A fresh, glowing floral with a beautiful, sensual range -- a lovely wafting top and a sunny, wide, middle. My skin amps the flowers and drinks down the patchouli. This is going on my big bottle list.

    Amsterdam

A beautiful light floral green. I will want this in the spring, and it's worth a big bottle purchase to make linen sprays, air fresheners, and bath products with, as well as to wear. It appears innocuous at first, tending slightly toward the generic, but there is something unique in the dry down that grows on you. An excellent fragrance for work, especially if your workplace is not scent-friendly.

    Marquise de Merteuil

OH. MY. EFF-ING. GOD. That was my first reaction. I have no words. No, really. Buy this for pure heady knock you down dead lush gorgeousness and if you think you can carry off smelling like a Marquise. This is a very beautiful, very fruity floral. It's drying down a little softer than its overture, but it comes out of the bottle full blown, announcing itself, makes you swoon. If you love fruity florals, you will be ecstatic with this one. If you don't, try it anyway. It's too good to miss. Oh, and PS. This is a very good one to refer people to if they start talking about how BPAL is all headshop smells, because this one is pure French perfume.

    Nanshe

I get lavender, freshly cut grass, and verbena. The oil itself is very light textured and the scent is light but penetrating. It goes straight up into my head when I smell it, and feels refreshing and soporific at the same time - I smelled it and felt uplifted while my eyelids suddenly felt heavy. It has an addictive quality in that I keep putting my nose to my wrist, as something in it nags at the edge of my memory but it won't come to me what the scent is. I've put it on my temples, third eye, and forearms, so I should be breathing it heavily throughout the night. We'll see what there is to tell in the morning. I like the scent well enough to wear as a perfume. It's clean and bright.
  11. Hmph! No one BPAL includes all those oils! But these seem likely candidates: Nyx Namaste Ouija Rakshasa Phantom Wicked Seraglio Black Rose Viola Delight Lucy's Kiss Rapture

    Neo-Tokyo

I don't know how it happened, but tonight while going through my imps, I realized I had Neo-Tokyo and had not tried it. OH! I love it so much. I cracked the imp open and thought "SPRING!" Spring means rain on cherry blossoms here, and that's what hit my nose first. Then the bamboo. Then citrus zest - more the peel than the fruit. Then orchid. All making a symphony of pure uplifting YUMMMMMMMMM. It's an instant spirit brightener in a bottle. It's the breath of angels. If you're familiar with classic non-BPAL perfumes, this is, to my nose, a sort of floral aldehyde in the manner of Arpege. Another masterpiece.

Rose Recommendations - which blend is for me?

I think Moon Rose sounds right down your alley - and Red Rose is a must have - I passed my wee bit on because it was so gorgeous I felt guilty keeping it when other people hadn't experienced it yet - it's a marvel of a rose scent. Psyche, Rakshasa and Harlot would be next on my list. Spellbound is exquisite but it's a incensey composition containing rose, rather than a rose scent. If you want something more like a rose soliflore, you'd be better off with Moon Rose or Red Rose.

Recs for those who can't do sweet perfumes?

Those are all pretty sweet, yeah. What non-BPAL scents do you like? It would probably be easier to recommend based on notes or scent families you know you like.
  18. Black Phoenix cures headaches for me. I don't get migraines, at least not debilitating ones, but I do get sharp pain from time to time that feels like I'm being stabbed in one temple with an icepick, and Black Phoenix has helped with that.

    Ave Maria Gratia Plena

I love this one in a hot bath. I'm thinking of ordering it just to make bath oil and a scrub. The hot water amplifies the scent and it's sooo creamy and soothing. Heavenly.

So many scents have almond in them because it's my favorite note, silly. Don't be sad.

    La Petite Mort

I get O, but softer, less piercing, and sexier grown up sister of Dana O'Shee. I can't live without Dana O'Shee, and I love O, although she sometimes gives me a headache. This one is not giving me a headache, and does stay a little closer to the skin. It reminds me of Spellbound, which I can't wear, but smells so great on one of my friends that it makes me envious. A great cool weather scent. I'm glad I bought the 5 ml. Edit: I applied this quite liberally in the morning and it lasted a good 10 hours. I especially liked it in the afternoon and evening. It dries down soap/powdery in a good way - it's clean and warm at the same time, and not overpowering. The more I wear this, the more I like it. To my mind, it's another possible signature scent, because it's so subtle it could almost just be your natural emanation (yeah right, if you were an angel...) or a person could think it was your soap or shampoo ... it's tantalizing and somewhat addictive. This is another can't live without scent, for me - as in, panic sets in when the bottle gets down to about a third left ....
