    How Doth the Little Crocodile

This brought a huge smile to my face as it is soooo pistachio, which I love and not only for how unusual it is. There's no real sudden change to this, the beginning is strongly pistachio but the mint/vanilla is there, as is a hint of chocolate. As it dries further gradually the pistachio dials down and the chocolate sneaks through a bit more but it always feels balanced. It has a "green" feel, but the colour green, not the scent of green plants. It's a foodyish smell for a hot day. I can imagine I smell cedar, but it is in no way a major player - it's like say a tree in Twilight compared to Bella (mint/vanilla), Edward (pistachio), and Jacob (chocolate). Nuts?? Yes I am! Who would like it: well aside from me, who found it everything wished for, try it if you like Tokyo-Stomp (dare I even say I think this is better?!), Green Tree Viper (this is like the snake oil-less version, kind of).

suggestions for a girl's writing class

My first though was Alice - and it has the literary connection too! Or The Mouse's Long and Sad Tale - very sweet and childlike. I have not smelt How Doth...Croc yet but that could be an option too?

    Sophia

Oh my goodness...it took me three sniffs of the imp going "oof what IS that??" each time to think...GERMOLENE!! It smells just like Germolene. On skin it is still Germolene with slightly amped jasmine of the follow me boy persuasion. I keep sniffing it because of it's strangeness but I don't think I could wear it lest people think I have some kind of first aid fetish. Very interesting but not one to wear outside for me. ETA: I was clearly way too quick off the bat with this one...it's morphed into...Phantasm. Crazy, and a shame as that is my wake me up scent, and it's bedtime. 30 minutes later than Phantasm, we have rose, slightly talc-y rose. It's morphtastic - too many personalities for me. I think this is the end of the changing though, very faint now, this has the smell of the end.

    Leipreachan

I am going to come back and write my proper review later as I am laughing still - I just tried this on my hand and my six year old daughter leaned in for a sniff and said "oohhh, keep that one!" then skipped off to clean her teeth for bed, two seconds later she ran back to say "oh, when you don't want that one, can I have it??" I'll try and give a proper evaluation of this in a bit but it is hard! Funnily the other day I was thinking how it'd be nice to have a bpal that smelt a bit like horses, well I think this might be it. My sniff-helper says..."horse's breath". I smell, grass, leather, horse-ness and something hedgerow-y.

BPAL version of Cool Water Game by Davidoff?

Velvet Panther - Dark musk, star anise, agarwood, styrax, vetiver, gaiacwood, king mandarin, violet leaf, black vanilla ? Not identical but it has a slight fruity element and a woody one too. You could try him with a decant.
  6. To answer the H.O.Glory/W.Diamondback question: H.o.G is very beeswax and gunpowdery on me whereas W.Di is more like leather, and the feel of a snake, if that makes sense!? WD to me is more snake oil than snake oil is, it really made me think snake... My love is growing for Boomslang, and have gone completely off Temple Viper which is now sickly sweet on me (and I like sweet, non foody smells), and I don't like King Cobra anymore either, Green Tree Viper is my go to "I have a headache" blend, and Cottonmouth is my rarely-worn but well-liked, floral-dress scent. I don't own a floral dress but you know what I mean... Actually, I do own a floral dress come to think of it, but it's pixellated flowers on black so it doesn't fit what I mean...rambles on...Cottonmouth is more vintage Laura Ashley hacked off short and left unhemmed with some battered but top quality white cowboy boots to complete the look. Okay, now I need cowboy boots.
  7. I ordered 9th July and have nothing still - you're not alone!

    Zombie Apocalypse

I can smell the strawberry jelly*, I think maybe this will work on me but then I get the whiff of the old curried donut of death. On skin the curry scent amps up so much that it's just horrible on me. Bah! *jelly as in the dessert not what we in the UK call JAM.

BPAL scents appropriate for very young children?

Oh, my mail is not my own anymore, to the point where if I can grab it as it drops through the door without them knowing I childishly hide it. BUT I have to have something that's mine. I like to wait until I have done chores to "earn" the package and open it slowly and carefully look at everything. They want to rip it open and spread it everywhere.

BPAL scents appropriate for very young children?

If it were me, I'd sleep with it between my boobs for a night (if that is possible - I don't know if this thing removes) and forgo the perfume for now. Mama is the best smell to babies.

    Pure by Jil Sander

I found this: Jil Sander Pure Perfume by Jil Sander, It has fragrance notes of coriander, galbanum, bergamot, aldehydes, carnation, tuberose, gardenia, rose, oakmoss, styrax, leather, and vetiver. Whew, pretty varied notes there! Have you tried Stormclouds Over The Midway for an ozone scent? I have no help really for you as with notes that varied and not having smelt it, it could smell like anything.

What BPAL would this fictional character wear?

Laurel's ideas were indeed fantastic and Tristran was also my first thought (even though I am not that knowledgeable about Star Wars).

    Inez

This undergoes a massive transformation on my skin, in the bottle it's all amber. On my skin, it's sharp and slightly masculine. It also reminds me very much of both J-Horror and White Phoenix which smell extremely similar on skin to this, and identical to eachother. I don't really know why. Inez:Golden amber, vanilla musk, myrrh, cedar, carnation, and red sandalwood. White Phoenix:Frangipani, magnolia, cotton flower, osmanthus, crystal musk, ambrette, white orchid, sugar cane, davana, white sandalwood, petitgrain, lavender, and lotus root. J-Horror:stargazer lily, white sandalwood, chrysanthemum, and shincha, with white mint, eucalyptus, licorice bark, and blood orange. So, nothing in common between the three except sandalwood and not even the same kind, but I can smell lily in Inez, and no sugar in White Phoenix, but they do all smell much the same on me. Someone mentioned Jacob's Ladder and I see the similarity there also. It has given me a headache and I am glad I did not order a bottle unsniffed like I almost did once. My mental picture is of some longish haired blonde guy who works in "The City", who thinks he is pretty handsome and laughs like a sealion as he gets drunk on expensive cocktails night after night in a glass and chrome 80's style bar. I wish this smelt on me how it appears to on others. I need to wash it off.

    Pepper

I had high hopes for this but it starts as single note pink pepper, and stays that way. I don't really like it.

    Velvet Panther

I was looking forward to this initially before I found I didn't like vetiver (which turns out to be not exactly true since in some blends it burns off fast), so dismissed it, then eventually I got a decant and mmmmmm. I love it. The mandarin was there, a tiny hint but very faint, I just eat citrus up. It reminds me of...Wulric. It smells almost lavendery in it's initial 20 mins or so and then begins to dry down into a fantastic smooth musky vanilla with almost a chocolate tone. It reminds me of Angel too, which is fab as I have been looking for something in the same vein for a while and all the usual ones don't do it on me, I clearly smell different in Angel to other people! I like the smell of this on me, I'd be equally happy to smell it on a man. A lovely surprise.

    Gore-Shock

Well this is Ho's Bakery Char Siu pasty. It made me kind of want bacon. Not something I will ever wear again - I only tried a dot like a pinhead too. Very well done, but it's not what I have in mind of how I would like to smell when I put on perfume. I just don't see anyone going..."hey you know that girl, the one that smells like grilled barbecue pork, hmmm she's so hot"

    Psychological Horror

Well it's Horror alright. My nose and skin are clearly nothing like anyone else's. There is no Ivanushka musk here for me. It smells of CURRY. It's a kind fenugreek/cumin smell over violets. So glad I did not spring for a bottle of this. On me this is blech. ETA, the next day the residual white musk that is left is kind of nice but not worth waiting for the curry to leave for, it has staying power though!
  18. Thank you for the suggestion I went and tracked down a bottle on the sale section it arrived today (thank you sunshinedaisybliss) and I love it,! It seems to have a similar vibe to bloody mary which is possibly my all time fave bpal! Yay! I'm so happy that you liked it!!

    Talcum Powder, French Talc....

I found Gothic Horror very rose talcy.
  20. cinnamonster

    Gothic Horror

Wet: I get Floral Gums. Those tiny sweets that taste of floral perfume. Dry early on: pure roses 5 mins later, I'm getting a breeze of talc that dies down rapidly to just a puff in the air and then underneath the roses, I get a vague spiciness and the smallest smudge of incense. It's very Tabula Smaragdina. Not something I would wear often but very nice. It'd make a very nice dusting powder I think. ETA this kind of grew on me, I think I'd like a bottle. In a side by side comparison with Tabula, Gothic Horror is soft and powdery against a sharper woodier incense in T S, of the two I prefer G H.

    Lovers with Rutting Cats

I was dying to try this, but now I have I am sad to report that it smells EXACTLY like Christian Dior Hypnotic Poison on me It is not what I expected. It's like uber-strong Playdoh, and I like the smell of Playdoh, it's just TOO strong in the exact same way that H.Poison is, and I don't necessarily find the scent of Playdoh all that sexy. I should have realised by now, the Asian influenced scents do not like me. Like me, they do not. Ugh. I'll keep trying them though.

    What scents are masculine? Gender-neutral?

Lady on The Grey goes to Polo for men on me. Is there some weird Gaiman thing happening here?

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

Well I only know Hypnotic Poison, but I tried Lovers With Rutting Cats the other day and it made me think of this very perfume! It drove me mad til I could remember what it smelt like, I know it's an LE, but it's still available from a few people on the forum.

    Desire

First off let me say this was a lab frimp. I NEVER would have tried this from the notes, but, hey I am REALLY glad I got this. From the start there's a sharp but musky smell, a sexuality that makes me feel this belongs in O's family. I had a really hard time putting notes to this, my guesses were perhaps myrrh, and maybe also opium. I was very very surprised to discover the real notes this morning when I tried it on again as my nose was a bit blocked due to allergies last night. Coming through is a sense of woodiness, under a sweet, sexy kind of smell. This is a such a mystery to me how this smells how it does, I get a vibe of violets now, the throw is violet-y but not close up. I'm really sorry to anyone reading this review and finding it hopeless. I'm baffled by this. I love it though! Breaking it down by notes... bittersweet neroli - I love Neroli black patchouli - this is kind of a no black musk - no no no no no gilded by apple - lab's apple is a no on me bergamot - usually good blood red rose - I amp up rose and usually avoid teak - teak hates me vanilla - vanilla is good This shouldn't work, but it seems to. So if you have reservations about any of the notes in this I would have to say just give it a try!
