    Juke Joint

I got frimped with this in my last order and was almost terrified to try it. It smells like awful perfumed soap in the vial to me, and I figured it had to be something floral. I looked up the description, and decided to give it a try despite first impresssions. When I first put it on, it was lovely sugary mint, then something kinda musky and skin scented came out, if that makes any sense. Now it's a very, very subtle minty skin. I wish the strong mint sugar smell had stuck around, but still this is way better than I thought it would be and I'm definitely glad I got an imp.

    Asp Viper (2006)

This is only the second Snake Oil scent I've tried apart from the original, but it's my favorite so far! The loveliness of snake oil, only more grounded somehow. The earthy almond smell is dominant when wet, then the SO peeks it's head out on the drydown. It's a gorgeous blend, sweet without being foody and earthy without being dirty. Super wear time.

    Beaver Moon 2007

This is one of my favorite foody scents! I was lucky enough to snag a bottle here on the forum and I love it! I was a little worried at first because the fruit notes have a rubbing alcohol tinge to them in the bottle, but it disappears after applying and turns into a lovely strawberry vanilla scent. It has a fairly subtle throw but the scent lasts for a pretty long time.

Ummm... why do I get licorice out of this? I didn't even notice it till the second time I tried this one, but I'm afraid the tiny whiff of Kabuki I caught while wearing this has sent this one to the swaps pile. The tiny hint of anise in it probably wouldn't have bothered me if it weren't for Kabuki. I love black licorice. But I think it's going to be a very long time before I can eat it again after wearing Kabuki. I never thought I would dislike a DB scent... they are all so lovely! Alas, if it weren't for the anise that no one else seems to have noticed, I would have loved this one.

Hmm.. I wasn't expecting this to smell anything like it does but it's lovely. There's a twinge of honey I suppose, but I don't get anything herbal out of it. It actually reminded me a lot of strawberries. I like.

    Hecate

This is an oh.em.gee. to die for scent in the imp. I get fruitiness out of it somehow... cherries. Like the bright red, sweet cherries in the Red Queen, not the dark cinnamon cherries of DB. Cherries and sweet musk and sweetness and goodness and oh my... And it stays that way for all of about 5 minutes after I put it on before something goes terribly, horribly wrong and it becomes a sickly bitter, soapy... awful smell. Just bad. I don't think I've ever been this disappointed in a BPAL scent.

    Azathoth

I really can't quite pick out very many of the notes as I'm not familiar with many of them, but this strikes me overall as very herbal, to the point of being headache inducing. I really can't come up with much else to say about it.

Just got this as a frimp... This is a sharp, soapy, heavy floral scent and it hates me.

    Malice

I don't know why, but this just is... okay. I wanted a dark, twisted scent like Perversion in this and I was a bit disappointed. It's a nice scent, but not as dark as promised. It smells like... I guess that's clove in the imp. I don't know. I've encountered all these other notes before and like them, but something in here is wrong. After I put it on, that wrongness calms down and becomes manageable... and then the florals appear. I hate florals. These are somewhat tolerable, and over all it's a nice scent, but it has some weird phases before it gets to a point that I like. I might try this a few more times, as I'm a bit confounded as to why it changes so much.

    Bloodlust

I heart blood. I don't think a dragon's blood scent could possibly be wrong, and this one is one of the best I have tried. The rich cherry cinnamon DB scent ir right up front, but underneath it is... more goodness. Deep spicy patchouli, and something that reminds me of Perversion. Leather? Or maybe some other spice? I don't know, but it is wonderful. Deep, spicy, sexy.

    Black Phoenix

Oh man, I've never posted a review of this? I was leery of buying this since I have a very picky nose and there were no individual notes listed. I really have no direction to go on to describe what I first smelled. Incense, of some dark and overwhelmingly heady sort. Patchouli, and maybe myrrh. This and Hellcat are the only two scents that have ever done this to me, but they were both so overwhelmingly incensy that I couldn't wear them. At all. So I threw it aside for a few months, and then tried it again. By this time, it smelled wonderful in the imp!! Cherry almond goodness. It was beautiful. But it all but disappeared on the drydown. I couldn't find it on my skin 2 hours after applying. I was a sad Sky.

    Imp

Ahhh!! My first real fruity scent. I was a huge fan of fruity and other foody stuff before joining BPAL, and then I discovered how wide the olfactory world was and have since been favoring scents containing blood, leather, musk, and other darker things that just feel more sophisticated to me. SO anyways... I ran across the description of imp somewhere and decided to give it a try. I do love fruity scents and have been estranged for a while. And the verdict is... this is SOOO worth a bottle. I am so glad I decided to grab a few fruity scents. This is deep and sophisticated like all the other scents I've been coveting, but with sparkling white peach right in front of it all. I'm in love. I love it. Did I say this is wonderful?? It also has a beautiful drydown, where something almost tonka pokes it head in for a while, and has great wear time and pretty decent throw. I love it. Sorry for rambling.

    Hellcat

The first time I tried this, for some reason, it was nothing but overwhelming asthma attack head shop in a bottle incense. It actually bugged my nonexistent allergies. Weird. So I threw it aside for a month or two and tried it again, and I could actually smell what it was supposed to smell like. It's lovely! It's a tad bit boozy, but it's definitely sweet butter rum and not any kind of bitter alcohol scent. It's very sweet but not overwhelmingly so. I get just a hint of incense now, which makes a nice deep, dark base for all the sweeter scents in this blend. I love it! Just have to remember to store any future hallcats for several months before applying.

    Masabakes

I'm very envious of the other reviews here because this sounds like a wonderful scent for other people. I just got this as a frimp, and was excited to try it after I read the review of it, but bug repellent seems to sum it up pretty well.

    Delight

This is one of the scents that reminded me (quite painfully) that I can't wear florals. This was all soapy bad perfume on me.
  16. OhioSky

    Harlot

I really shouldn't be able to wear this. I hate flowers in a bottle. And yet, after the initial overwhelmingly soapy-floral drydown, this is very nice. The cinnamon comes right out and tones all the roses down and makes this a fairly pretty blend. I'm not sure how long it's going to b worth it for me to suffer through the drydown, though.

    Haunted

This is sooo not what I was expecting from this blend. It's the perfect vanilla. No amber, no musk, just vanilla. Dusty vanilla, but in a good way, if that makes sense. This is a wonderful scent, but so unexpected. Wear time is decent, throw is... subtle. Like someone near you could catch a whiff of this from a few feet away, but they would think there was an open window somewhere and they had by chance caught a whiff of someone baking with vanilla a few doors down.

I have no idea what it is that I smell when I wear this. I sat here, trying to come up with a more clear review, or pin down some of the notes, but I can't. All I know is that I cannot wear this. I guess it's probably the aquatic thing, but I've never encountered that note in a BPAL before so I can't say for sure.

    Centzon Totochtin

This is sooo worth a bottle. It's a very sweet scent on me, but somehow not foody at all. Without looking at the scents, I would have guessed it had tonka in it. Maybe my nose contorts the cocoa a little bit. I can pick out the tobacco and wine, which gives it a sexy edge, but most of the scent is fairly sweet and light. It's definitely made it onto my bottle list on the first wear.

    The Red Queen

I recently got this as a frimp, and it is wonderful! And to think, the description never even appealed to me! This is one of few scents that actually smells good to me in the imp. That warm, bright cherry smell is right up front, and stays there for a while after applying. One the dry down: Cherry cordials. I think the almost almond-chocolate scent is the woods that transform on me for some reason. It's almost woodsy, but kind of nutty and bordering on foody somehow... it's a weird note, but it is lovely! This is the first Mad Tea Party blend I have tried, and I am pleased!!

    The Antikythera Mechanism

This is just gorgeous. I love vanilla scents, and BPAL makes the deepest, most complicated vanilla scents! This isn't a foody candle style vanilla, it's more like vanilla flavoring for baking, which is awesome. I didn't know what to expect of the teakwood because I've never really encountered that note before, but as soon as I put it on I had no problem picking it out and identifying it. Smells just like it's name. This oil really smells just like it's description. The vanilla and tobacco and teak are all there, in fairly equal parts to my nose, and so well blended. Beautiful!

    Ars Moriendi recs

I have only tried Haunted and Twilight from this area of the site. I love Haunted, can't stand Twilight. Smells like soapy florals on me, though no one else in the reviews seemed to get flowers/soap out of it. As someone who has worked in a funeral home for almost 2 years, though, I will admit that I generally steer clear of the Ars Moriendis. There's not much that smells good about death, especially Embalming Fluid. I can't see myself ever trying this, even if I happen upon a free imp. So, that being said, even though you asked about Ars Moriendi specifically, I find some other scents to be way more Fall-ish, like Pumpkin 1. Have you tried any of the Halloweenies?

    Blood Amber

Wow, is this a wonderful scent! I've been dying to order this for a while now, but you know how it is trying to narrow your order down to 6 imps... well, it finally drew itself to the top of my list and I am glad!! Wet, this is a wonderful bulging, thick, sweet, cherry scent not unlike Dragon's Blood. As it dries down, a little of the amber comes out and I can smell some sort of very light, subtle incense as well, but I have to look for it. Without sniffing at my skin, I still get the cherry scent very strongly. It's only been on my skin for a little over an hour, but the throw is pretty decent so far. This is definitely my favorite Blood scent so far!

    Marquise de Merteuil

This is definitley a rulebraker scent on me. This is the first thing with dominant florals in it that doesn't give me a headache. It smells moslty of peach, which is just a beautiful scnet, and the flowers are there but are not soapy or in any way offensive. The flowers turn more... light? sugary? on the drydown and mix very well with the peach.

    Pumpkin IV (2008)

This is oddly.... Dragon's Milk on me. I think I adore it, though I have similar scents that are longer lasting, so i think I will have to wear it a few times before I decide if it's bottle-worthy. It's predominantly vanilla on me, but the cherry tobacco comes through beautifully. It's woodsy, but it's not green like walking through a pine forest, it's a brown woodsy like sticking your nose in an old cedar chest. It is definitely lovely.
