How much is in that imp anyway?

When I estimate the level of a less than top-of-label-full imp I usually turn it to the side just until the oil shows and then estimate according to thickness of oil and speed of it moving how far it would go back down when I turn it upright again. It's not perfect, but I think noone could expect you to give more than a vague guess. In order not to disappoint anyone, I tend to write down the percentage of the lower end of my guess, i.e. if I think the level might be between 50% and 60%, I'll put down 50%.
  2. If I remember Pink Phoenix correctly, the part that made for the staying power, reminds me of that aspect of Mme. Moriarty. They are kind of different, though. Have you tried Mme?
  3. Before I dropped it into my bathtub last night, I thought Twilight ballistic smelled A LOT like The Emathides. However, the scent became funny/unpleasant when the ballistic dissolved in the water.

    Recs for Longest Lasting Oils

I think Follow Me Boy has decent throw and longevity. Maybe not as long as red musk scents, but pretty ok. It also smells really wonderful. You should definitely get an imp to check it out!

    Lulu

This is really sharp and soapy on my skin for about 10-15 minutes. Then it softens a bit and I get something really nice underneath the soapiness that reminds of some Lush product. Maybe the gardenia-bergamot-combo? It still smells soapy, especially in the throw. It's driving me mad that I seem to smell something delicious behind that veil of soapiness that I just cannot define or catch for the life of me. I wish I got only that background smell, but as it is, Lulu is probably too soapy-clean for me.

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

My father owns a perfume that costs 300 Euro a 50ml bottle, X by Clive Christian, and I swear it smells just like Three Gorgons. It seems to have a longer wearlength, though (Three Gorgons is awfully short-lived on me). I'm a bit confused because I think X for women looks more like it could be the one resembling Three Gorgons, but from the bottle of X you cannot tell if it's the male or female version.

    Joyful Moon

I'm having a bad cold, and my smelling capacities are probably not at their height right now, but I think I like this. It reminds me of several scents at a time: Phobos and Zephyr for the strong white musk plus fresh white-yellowy things, Black Lace for the almost cotton-y vanilla-musk combo, and Antique Lace out of the same reason. I can also see the comparison to Under The Harvest Moon although that one was awful on me (I blame the grey amber/ambergris). So... the white musk is the most prominent on me and is almost a bit too sharp, but I still like it. The vanilla mixes into that and becomes almost unrecognizable as a separate note. Together the musk and vanilla make for that cotton-y feel, I think. I can only smell the florals very faintly, which might be because of my cold. When freshly applied, I got a very pretty sparkly scent close to the skin weaving in and out of the vanilla-white musk base. I'm looking forward to wearing this again when my sinuses have cleared!

    EPIC BPAL Spreadsheet Thread

Nope, but I do separate my TAL, BPTP, BPAL, and other retailers into separate worksheets. Google Docs used to choke on the spreadsheet after a while, but OpenOffice has worked perfectly for me. Yes, I had seperated TAL, BPAL, BPTP, order planning, and swap organizer worksheets. I started the spreadsheet in Excel some years ago and continued it in OpenOffice. Lately it had been falling apart. Whole entries disappeared, comments got exchanged... comments got deleted by themselves... weird stuff. I've now saved all the data I could except my own reviews into a fresh spreadsheet (yours, THANKS!!), and will stop using comments for reviews. Maybe that will help to prevent the thing breaking down again.

    Witchblade

I usually don't like neither red musk nor metal notes, yet somehow this called my name with the antiqued amber, the frankincense and the adjectives "antediluvian and sacred" in front of "metal". And this really is quite pleasant. Mind, you, still not a scent for me, but I do enjoy testing it. I second Little Bird's House of Mirror comparison. There's something lovely, antique about the metal and amber. It's a precious metal and it's old yet strong and indestructible. The red musk does give a hint of liveliness, and it's not overwhelming at all. I've already added my half decant to my swaps list, but writing this, I think I might reconsider and keep it for myself. It really is a very nice scent.

    War

Ew... I do not like this. Freshly applied, it's so harsh, it made me cough. There's something intensely weird and dissonant about the spices, musks and the honeysuckle. Sweet and sticky, yet harshly firey-spicey with a strong red throw. Something smells like menthol in there, too. Maybe the ginger? And I think there must be cassia, because hardly any other spice is so overwhelming. Not for me. Glad, I got to try it, though.

    Roses, Pearls, and Diamonds

I tested this yesterday and am reviewing from memory only. Short: It's lovely, very lovely. Sweet, powdery, smooth. It's an innocent girly pink powdery scent, much as one would expect. While I really like it, I think I might be bored by its niceness to quote someone's review above. It's a bit too soft and edge-less to be a me-scent, I think. I will still treasure my imp for moments when I feel I need something nice and innocent. The scent is pretty light and would need reapplication IMO. It reminds me a bit of Alice without the dreaded honey.
  12. Maybe try rosewood blends? Fenris Wolf comes to mind. Also: The Magician, Dee. Thanatos is somewhat masculine, but still has a sweet rose note, that might not work for you. Black Rose and/or Blood Rose has a rather bitter, dark rose. Same goes for To A Woman. The Blasphemare Reliquary has a subdued rose IMO, also L'Examen de Minuit.

When your favorite GC blends are discontinued

This might be completely off, but if you like rose, maybe try Psyche. It has lavender and Chinese white musk and orchid. It also has frankincense and sweet Bulgarian rose and is quite a bit sweeter and more incensey and less elegant-soft-fine as Yvaine, so I'm not sure it would work. But parts of the scent strike me as slightly similar.

    Paper Kite

Coconut, white sugar, angelica, and black pepper. It makes me want to eat my arm. I'm seconding "toasted coconut" and also "maple syrup". This is what people who can do brown sugar and caramel must feel about those scents. It reminds me of Vietnamese coconut candies, and I love the toasted edge from the pepper. The sugar is ok in here, not tooth-achingly sweet, just edible and delicious. There's something fresh, and almost green, but only if I sniff the spot where I dabbed it on close. I'm on an anti-sugar diet since Saturday, and I'm not sure I should wear this before I've been going steady without sugars for a little while longer... It makes my mouth water.

    Gypsy

Of the three moths I've tested today, I think I like this one the most... It's not as sugary sweet, a more wholesome sweetness with the vanilla and musk... At first I get Egyptian musk, and it's a bit sharp and a bit paper-y to steal the expression from previous reviewers. It feels dusty and light, and at this point I don't see how anything interesting could come out of it. But after some hours, the spot where I applied it, has a lovely soft and warm-sweet skin-vanilla/tonka-musk scent Still a bit of dustiness/powderiness, but it's all warm and envelopping now. The sugar isn't really noticeable anymore, even though the vanilla and tonka seem to be sweeter than in other blends. I love the tonka in Gypsy. It's really noticeable, and I think the tonka is, what the scent dried down is most about for me. There is some sparkly dustiness... soft spice with a citrus tinge that I can identify as Cardamom, too. My review is completely incoherent, I know. Let me put an end to this by saying that I am definitely going to try to get a bottle or two... or three. :runsofftostalkswaps:

    Luna

Again with the sweetness, just like Rosy Maple... only this one is green-yellow fruity instead of rosey-pink. I immediately get the sweet pear. It's dripping pear syrup with some brighter notes. I found this slightly less unnerving than Rosy Maple, but am still not sure that I feel completely alright wearing something this sugary. A very unwholesome tart and sugary scent. Might try again, but I don't have much hope for Luna and me. Fun to test, though.

    Rosy Maple

I tested this today after I had been slightly headachey the whole day, and its sweetness didn't really favour my condition. The scent - at first - is pleasant, very pleasant, candy-ish sweet... But the sweetness is a bit too much for me. I also had the feeling that it somehow toppled over on my skin, and that the result was a weird, off scent very close to my skin. The throw was still probably good smelling to people standing next to me, but it kind of got on my nerves pretty soon. Pity. I know my skin amps sweetness in many blends, so maybe I should avoid the very very sweet ones.

    Fledgling Raptor Moon

I gave this a quick test yesterday, and will have to update later, but let me just say this: Bird feathers. Birds. More birds. More feathers. Amazing. Not sure I'd wear it much at this point, but as far as capturing a concept goes, this is fantastic. First summary: feathery rather than powdery, but very reminiscent of powdery... with the added oily talc that's on bird feathers... something greenish that I wouldn't have suspected from the notes list... soft, not sweet... It does have a similarity to The Little Sparrow, but is much fiercer and much more distinctively bird musk.

    Bette Noir

This is deliciously deep and full-bodied - ripe fruit and orange blossom and benzoin - in the decant vial, but turns soapy/perfumey flat on my skin, too. Maybe the amber, or something in the combination of the fruit and floral with the myrrh. I might try it in a scent locket, because I really like the scent in the vial.

Thanks Kristana! I'll take you up on that if I reach a point when I am not yet fed up with uploading images and have run out of them.

    EPIC BPAL Spreadsheet Thread

Thanks, Twilighteyes, I'll only use yours for now - next time I find time to enter stuff, which will probably be next time I am procrastinating something more important. (I should have been working on our departments' BA programme flyer illustration yesterday.) MeiLin, I'm on perfoom, too, and started to enter things (I think ). I'll certainly help later on. For now, I want to see some stuff on ScentBase complete.

    EPIC BPAL Spreadsheet Thread

No need to be sorry, stellans!! Question: Does anyone have the images from past LE Salon blends (or other past LEs that came with pictures)? I'm uploading pictures to ScentBase since Cam has made me an admin (probably seeing that I'm running full virgo mode on the website, adding stuff like whoa and bombarding her with e-mails every time I couldn't do something in normal user mode. ).

    EPIC BPAL Spreadsheet Thread

My spreadsheet is completely messed up... Ever since I switched to Open Office, it's been giving me problems, being slow and constantly getting hung up in order to save the data... Now I've noticed that many comment fields, which included the original scent descriptions and my review comments, have simply disappeared, and lots more have miraculously switched places, so that now the Eshe comment sticks to the Pit and the Pendulum, the comment of which is stuck with Tum, and so on. I think I'll completely abandon my spreadsheet now. It doesn't seem to get along with the amount of data that is in it. I'll copy paste the reviews I can save to ScentBase and try to manage using only that. Alternatively I've thought about splitting my spreadsheet into several smaller sheets. One for TAL, one for BPTP, one for BPAL LEs, one for stuff already tested, disliked and swapped... But I'd hate to have to jump between files. Anybody else having problems with spreadsheets breaking down from too much data?
  25. Khryseê, if you can find some? I'm sorry, that's the only thing that comes to mind right now...
