This is a dark, rich, earthy fragrance, that smells like fecund black soil. The patchouli in this is very strong, almost hot, and the cinnamon compliments it beautifully. The amber and sandalwood weave together with the patchouli and cinnamon, giving it an earthy, loamy smell. Gorgeous fragrance! Notes include: amber, sandalwood, black patchouli and cinnamon

Starts out on a very fruity, sweet note, like juicy fruit chewing gum. After a few minutes, a warm, velvety peach and vanilla note emerges, followed by a cooling sandalwood and heliotrope. I am not usually a fan of peach fragrances, but this one is very nice, because of the sandalwood. One of the nicest woodsy peach fragrances out there. Notes include: Amber, heliotrope, golden sandalwood, peach blossom and vanilla bean.

This is a superb tea rose fragrance, that smells like a real tea rose - not synthetic at all. It's a very delicate tea rose, and not overpowering. Lovely for those who like tea rose scents.

I wasn't even going to give Kabuki a second thought, as it contains anise, which is an ingredient that I cannot stand in a fragrance. However I received a sample with my order, and I am so glad I did! This is a lovely cherry oil, that is not too sweet. The anise is very subtle, and tames the sweetness of the cherry nicely. A note of red musk compliments these two notes, creating a lovely, dark, rich cherry perfume oil. Very nice!

This is a very sexy fragrance. I don't get incense like the others, but I do smell a very warm, slightly musky scent, that smells like Night Queen and Kush. The orange blossom is sweet and sublime, and the ginger is spicy and hot. Couple that with patchouli, and what you've got is a delicious, almost buttery perfume. Yum!

What a superb incense fragrance - one of the best I have smelled. I adore Anne Bonny too, which to me is the Holy Grail of incense oils but I have to tell you, Penitence is INCREDIBLE! It is a slightly bitter, dark incense, with notes of Frankincense and Myrrh. It is not as dark and smokey as Anne Bonny, but it has a green, herbal note that makes it fresh and beautiful. To me, this smells as though I am walking through a pine forest, and somebody is burning church incense in the forest. Beautiful. You have to try this one!

Dear BPAL, please don't ever discontinue this scent. I think my heart would break!

This is a bold, masculine fragrance, but I think it can be worn by a woman too. It is a dark, almost medicinal vetiver fragrance. The sandalwood balances out the vetiver, and a soft note of musk and violet (very faint violet) tame down the boldness of the scent. Overall, I think this is a well composed oil, and vetiver lovers should try it. Notes from BPAL include: white sandalwood and golden musk with a dark halo of amber, a breath of imperial florals, unbending woods, and the shadow cast by vetiver and violet.

My description: This opens up on a very sweet note of Myrrh. As it dries down, I can smell sweet herbs and a balsamic note. This fragrance smells quite 'sacred' to my nose, as it has a honeyed sweetness that I tend to associate with Myrrh. I feel calm and peaceful wearing it. It is a sublime and beautiful oil - simple, yet complex at the same time. If you love Serge Luten's La Myrrhe (as I do!) you will probably like Anubis. Notes include: myrrh, storax, balsam, and embalming herbs. I can smell a note of lotus, honey and rosemary in this too, although they are not listed as notes.

An interesting aside is that Thyme is an important ingredient in modern embalming fluid and may have been part of the mysterious oils and herbal infusions used for that purpose by the Ancient Egyptians. Thyme is reputed to have an invigorating effect and to cure headaches, although these uses were not noted in surviving Egyptian texts.

I am such a dumbass, when I placed my order last night I ordered 3 imps that I already placed in an order 1 month ago, that I'm still waiting for. Do you think it will be possible to ask the kind folks at BPAL to please send me 3 alternate imps of my choice, as I have already ordered the others? I guess i've been so stressed I forgot to update my bpal wishlist.

I'm in love with Ann Bonny already. I'm looking for dark, smoky, resinous bpal oils, preferably without any floral or fruity notes. Can you please recommend any for me to try?
