    Marquise de Merteuil

I think I'm broken. There is no almost no peach here, no amber, and no vetiver, which is disappointing because those are three fragrances I love. I'm getting a very sophisticated floral blend, probably the jonquil, but I like my florals, um, childish. It's spicy, and there's a little bit of peach on the drydown, but it's definitely not me. Guess I'll have to wait until I grow up to appreciate it

    O

The scent of sexual obsession, slavery to sensual pleasure, and the undercurrent of innocence defiled utterly. Amber and honey with a touch of vanilla. My skin seems to go for honey and vanilla scents, so I tried O. Unfortunately, it came out way too sweet and cloying on me. I could smell the amber and vanilla, but it was so heavy I almost felt like wheezing. It's not a bad scent at all, and it's sort of comforting in the winter because it's very warm, but it's not me. After half an hour it was baby powder with a little honey in the background.

    Undertow

I wanted to love this scent, because I'm a sucker for anything with mint in it, but I gave up on Undertow. It goes on clean and dark and minty, and thirty seconds later it's entirely what I *think* is lotus, but I'm not sure. Whatever it is, it smells like plastic on me and gives me a headache. I ended up washing it off and I'm going to swap my 5mL bottle. Sad. I think I might turn the imp I have into a room spray, though, because the mint is lovely and my husband and I both really like the scent.

    Blood Kiss

Interestingly enough, this scent didn't change much once I put it on. The cherries came through a bit more, but the overall scents remained, from strongest to weakest, clove, vetiver, cherry, and vanilla. I didn't get a lot of honey, but I'll live. I was in it for the vetiver and vanilla, anyway. Also, six hours after application, I can still smell it on me, which is very unusual. Most scents have either faded to powder or disappeared completely on me in two hours. After it's dry, it's more sweet than smoky and the cherry and vanilla balances the clove more. I'll definitely go through my 5mL bottle. And the description makes me want to sit down and write vampire erotica.

Best BPAL blends without floral notes

We have very similar tastes in scents, it seems. Have you thought about Undertow (clean mint and juniper, very refreshing), Nocturne (aquatic notes, lotus, I think?), Glitter, Seance, Sea of Glass, Dirty, Delirium, Jack, Lightning, Verdandi, Envy, or Absinthe? I don't think any of those have rose notes, and I specifically look for scents without jasmine. (Most of these are on my wishlist.)

    Moon Rose

In the vial: it's Crabtree and Evelyn Rosewater and Glycerin soap/bubble bath, which I grew up using. Fond childhood memories are never a bad thing. It's pleasant and light. Drying: I think I put too much on. The rose scent is still very strong. I think the scent is very feminine and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes rose scent, but it's not me. Dry: Ick. It's gone to plastic on me and there's something very synthetic behind the rose. Glad I got it in a swap. Overall: For those who like rose, get it. It's not overpowering but still very sweet. I think I'll stick to my light, slightly more masculine scents. Try: I put this on over Bath and Body Works Cotton Blossom lotion and called it Rosie Cotton, and it wasn't bad until the rose went funny on me.

    Blood Lotus

In the vial: Ow! There's something in it that goes straight to my sinuses, and for a minute I thought I might be allergic to it because there's something in it that makes my head hurt. I had two imps, though, so I figured I'd dilute one and try it, and trade the other if it still didn't work. Diluted: It's sharp in the initial application, partly floral, part...is that cherry?...and part vetiver. It's a little smoky. Drying: It's becoming much more floral and feminine, and whatever gave me the headache is going away. It's almost a little like Unseelie, though Unseelie was much heavier on me. Dry: My husband likes it. Says it smells girlie and floral. I agree with him on the florals, and that it's sweet. Overall: I don't love it, but I don't hate it, either. I'll probably use the second imp, but a big bottle isn't in my future.

    Absinthe

I've never smelled absinthe (I live a sheltered life), but I did like this fragrance. Initially, it's quite strong and a little minty, with the anise and lemon strongest. When it dries, the anise is still strong, but it's balanced out by the other scents. It's clean and refreshing, even on drydown, where more of the lemon comes through. The only thing I didn't smell was the cardamom, but that's probably mixed in with the general wormwood scent, for all the sense that makes. Will probably put in an order for a 5mL of this with my next order.

    Shattered

I need a 5mL of this. Right. Now. The scent didn't change much once it was on me, but that's okay. I loved it. The grapefruit came through as the strongest scent, followed by the lotus, then the aquatics. I didn't get much mint, but still, no problem. Even though the notes are scents that I associate more with summer, I liked this in the winter because it reminds me of sunny days. I didn't get a sense of it being sharp so much as refreshing. It was a nice pick-me-up on a cloudy day. This is a very clean scent, which makes me a fan, and it's nice to wear if you just want to smell good and not say "Hi world! I'm wearing perfume!" My only complaint is that it didn't last as long as I'd like, but I think that's something in me: scents in general don't last long on me. Still, for when it did last it was very nice. Enough citrus for those who prefer citrusy scents, but not so citrusy that those who prefer a lighter scent couldn't get away with it.

    Ultraviolet

I haven't a clue as to how the Lab made this smell like winter, but it absolutely does. The violet and eucalyptus blend beautifully in the bottle, but the violet comes through more on my wrist. I love sharp, cold scents and this one did not disappoint. Don't laugh, but this goes with my personality: I'm a black-haired emaciated goth in a blonde, blue-eyed curvy prep's body. The violet mellows the sharpness and works more with my closet full of pink sweaters, but the mint keeps me on edge. Definitely will buy again.

    Jack

Jack's not bad, but not my favorite, either. I generally prefer clean, light scents, or mint, but I'm a sucker for anything that smells like autumn so I tried a swipe of Jack. I definitely smell the pumpkin and cinnamony scents, but the butter is really overwhelming on me and for some reason it smells like chicken soup on the drydown. I think I might like this as a room spray, though, since it would go quite well with my pumpkin and cinnamon spice candles.

    Alice

I have come to the conclusion that I have no ability to describe scents, but I will say that Alice is my favorite and I'm rationing my imp so it will last until my 10mL bottle arrives. It's very sweet on me, but floral sweet rather than sugar sweet (like Lush Rock Star soap or Creamy Candy Bath, neither of which I like), and it dries to a honeylike powdery scent. I layered it over Lush Potion and that adds to the carnation and helped it last longer. (Also, I think I mixed the body spray too weak. Must make it stronger next time.) I didn't get much bergamot at all, which is all right because I'm not generally a fan of bergamot. I want my whole life to smell like Alice.

    Unseelie

Unseelie is Chanel No. 5 on me, all the way. And I love it. It's powdery, a little floral, a little herbal, but really more than anything else it's bringing up childhood memories of playing with my grandmother's Chanel No. 5 powder. There's a jasmine scent, too, and that's probably the strongest after the powder. I mixed it into a perfume spray and it's lasting quite a long time, so yay for that. And Mr. Cedar likes it

Recs for those who can't do sweet perfumes?

Of course "sweet" scents are in the nose of the beholder, but I'm wearing Unseelie right now and on me it smells very spicy, even a little bit like Opium perfume. Have you also tried Envy? I didn't get any sweetness at all from it, just herbs and lavender. I haven't tried Nocturne, Shattered, or Sea of Glass yet (still waiting on the order), but those sound like ones you might want to try, too.
