  1. I second Embalming Fluid. Kumiho would also be great, or Arkham, though it's a bit more masculine, but very light and refreshing. Baobhan Sith is also a nice summery, light citrus floral.

    Loviatar

I got Loviatar as an extra with my last order. I probably never would have ordered it on my own, but I'll try pretty much any scent at least once. It started out as one of the most fascinating BPAL scents yet, but I had the same misfortune as Effluvia and it quickly became more and more powdery, rapidly progressing to baby powder.

    Jabberwocky

After the initial blast of eucalyptus, this mellowed into a nice bright foresty smell. The orange sweetens it a bit, but in the end the pine was just a bit too masuline for me to wear as a fragrance. However, if Blackrayne & Beth conspire to make a Jabberwocky soap, I'll definitely be getting some.

Preview of the June 1st Update

I'm going through a major episode of May/June gloom right now. We've had so much rain in recent weeks, thunderstorms again today. At least everything will be lush & green. I know what Ted's talking about, though. Once it gets hot, rainy days are my happiest summer days.

Preview of the June 1st Update

Hooray! But poor Brian, you guys are gonna be slammed with orders.

    Villain

I was so excited to get my wayward February order, because I was dying to try Villain. It is as delicious as I hoped, but unfortunately the musk did its usual dirty trick of turning to baby powder on me. So, now I have hopes for Whitechapel which is in a recent order, though if that doesn't work, I may ask Beth if I can commission her to make a Villain without the musk (maybe a Rascal or Scalawag).

    Dandelion

I don't know how Beth does it, because this smells exactly like a dandelion. Pure summery backyard goodness, and as it dries down there seems to be a touch of something spicy. Very nice!

Hippiesh, spicy, musky scents - without patchouli

I can't remember, do you like carnation. I just got an imp of Masquerade and I like it very much. Normally patchouli does not work on me at all, but in this one it does.

    Bacchanalia

I must have the complete opposite body chemistry of almost everyone on the forum, because civet actually smells smoky & sexy on me (whereas anything with even a smidgen of musk turns to a hideous baby powder smell). I don't smell any grape in this one, unlike Puck, which I liked until it overwhelmed me with grape. This is an almost incensey smokiness that reminds me a bit of Chanel No. 5. I like it very much and hope it doesn't turn to cat pee or baby powder (which is actually worse than cat pee in my opinion).

    Baobhan Sith

I would say Baobhan Sith could be Embalming Fluid's little sister. It starts out with a nice grapefruit kick, but then dries down into a lovely soft floral. It is a perfect light fragrance for warm weather. Unfortunately, I was looking for something with a stronger grapefruit presence, so I will probably pass this on to someone else.

    Laudanum

This one is soooo good. Several people have said that Old Morocco is like Snake Oil without the vanilla. I would say that this is like Snake Oil without the sweetness (Old Morocco was still a bit too sweet for me). To me this has the tingly spicyness of an old-fashioned root beer before they started ruining it with corn syrup and god knows what else. On second wearing, I agree with the first few reviews, there is definitely a medicinal feel to this and it has a bit of an intoxicating effect as well. Maybe it's the black poppy, I'm not sure since I have no idea what poppy smells like.
  12. I tried on Allegory tonight and it was totally incensey on me, which confuses me, because none of the listed ingredients suggest incense. Maybe it's the civet, I'm not really sure.

Blackrayne and Black Phoenix Collide: SOAPS

Is there any chance your collaboration would lead to Beth doing a perfume version of the Sweet Earth soap? It is such a delicious and relaxing fragrance I think it would make a most excellent sleeping potion. It knocked me out last night.

Blackrayne and Black Phoenix Collide: SOAPS

Embalming Fluid would make the best morning shower soap ever! Saturnalia & Greed also get my vote.

    Greed

Now this is rich and sexy. It makes me think of the kind of woman who is sexier in trousers (and can probably kick some butt if she has to), like Lauren Hutton, Sigourney Weaver or Marlene Dietrich. Usually patchouli does not work on me at all, but as Andrabell said above, there is a sweetness that mellows the patchouli. I got this once as a extra and thought it was way too strong so I swapped it. I got it a 2nd time as an extra and I'm so glad I gave it another try.

    Saturnalia

I love this! I've had this one lurking in the back of my mind for some time. I don't particularly like violet or vetiver, but the name and description somehow enticed me, and Beth made the decision for me by sending me an extra imp of it. I can't properly describe it, but the violet and vetiver somehow combine to make an end result that is much greater than the single notes that go into it. It's somehow soft, spicy and green without becoming at all baby powderish.

Choosing a BPAL for your dog

Pain might be good, terrible as it sounds. I think it's lavender and pennyroyal and pennyroyal is supposed to be a flea repellent. I would dilute any oils because animals (especially cats, I'm not so sure about dogs) can be very sensitive to essential oils.

    Cordelia

I was loving the spicyness of this, it was a slightly carnation-like smell, but within 5 minutes the inside of my arm started burning and turned red. Is there some cinnamon hidden in this one?

    Cheshire Cat

I can't get enough of the opening grapefruit and lavender (and currant?) combination. Unfortunately, it dries down into a sweet powdery smell. I think it's the musk. I'm going to have to try some single note grapefruit.

Since I seem to need to reiterate it...

I end up cutting off the ties on the imps I keep, too, so I wouldn't mind doing away with the ties altogether. It's bad enough that Beth has to scatter her energies on a crappy day job. She shouldn't have to be worrying about imps ears ties at this point. I think any changes that would allow her to focus on her creations instead of tedious details would be an excellent idea.

    Puck

I love this one too, but was almost afraid to admit it. I find it to be very cozy and mossy, though the grape may make it a bit sweeter than I would like. I also only wear this at home for fear of other people saying "what is that smell?"

    Succubus

I've been having trouble coming up with a proper review for this one. I love it, but I honestly can't say that I recognize a single element of it. To me it smells wonderfully light, clean and airy. I guess I would have to say it's delicate & blossomy with a touch of almond (for me at least). I wish I had laundry detergent that smelled like this, because I find it very soothing and dreamy.

    Séance

Normally I steer clear of all sweet and/or powdery scents, but I find this one to be delicious. It starts out as a sweet, boozy smell when wet, then dries to a creamy, slightly powdery coconutty, almondy, figgy sort of scent. I don't know how else to describe it, but I'll definitely be getting a bigger bottle.
