Food-y Scent Recommendations (Help Me Find A Scent!)

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I am new to the indie perfume world, and - frankly - it's been something of a rough start. I have around 25 imps and perfumes, but so far, I've only liked 2 (Snake Oil and Eat Me), and even those two are a little off at times. Sometimes I like how they smell, sometimes they turn a little "hotel casino" on me. Other non-BPAL scents that I thought I'd like but ended up not liking all that much are Solstice Scent's Black Forest and Rose Mallow Cream (although between the two of them, I like RMC better. BF is WAY too strong). I thought I'd like white florals and roses, because I like them as scents in general, but discovered that while I think they smell nice on me, I usually get sick of them within a few hours. I'd probably wear them when I'm feeling pretty or elegant, not when I want to feel everyday-nice. Turns out, rose smells too old on me.

I seem to be leaning more towards gourmand scents, so I'm wondering if any of you have any tasty-smelling recommendations for me. I'm in my early 20's, so I don't really want anything too sweet (marshmallow, cotton candy), but I also don't want anything too dark - unless, of course, you strongly believe a scent is an exception. I'm open to trying stuff!

Wow, that's quite a range to start of with. But, super helpful. Eat Me, IIRC, has a vanilla note that might turn plastic with your skin chemistry. Snake Oil is also one of those that people either love or hate, especially between aged or new. As for SS Rose Mallow Cream, at least you know you enjoy rose, but can get sick of it, so that opens a lot of stuff to try. I would love to send you some imps, if you don't mind. I have a ton, and I'm always looking to help newbies try new stuff. Message me if you're interested.

Immediately what comes to mind is Cocoa Pink since the majority of her scent catalog leans towards the gourmand side. And I really adore Solstice Scents for their fruitier stuff. Do you know if you like any fruity stuff? I like BPAL for strawberry stuff, but SS for blueberry. And her Violet Mallow is amazing. Not too foody or floral (same with Rose Lime Kulfi and Cardamom Rose Sugar). And I recommend Nocturne Alchemy for vanilla or musky vanilla. Oh, and for white florals, I recommend BPAL for Snow White. It's an LE, but gets re-released each year. Another good one is Long Moon Night. If you're trying to find suggestions for BPAL General Catalog (always available), I would specify that. Mouse's Long and Sad Tale is easy to like, too!

Nooooo!! 😭 The sweetness of Eat Me and Snake Oil are what I like about them!

I've heard of that! My worry is that the sweet pea, even if it smells wonderful, will bore me quickly. I like food-y scents because I will always willingly accept food. I may not always willingly accept flowers. I loved Deconstructing Eden's Juliet, but soon grew bored of smelling like sweet pea. I'll still give it a try tho!

Do you like fruity scents or baked goods? If so, I might have some suggestions. :)

Yes, please!!

I can only comment on BPAL, and baked goods and fruits don't often work on me personally, but I'll try!  BPAL has a gourmand imp pack that contains, besides Eat Me, Bliss (chocolate), Blood Kiss (I don't consider this one gourmand but I love it -- ok, it does have cherry and honey and vanilla but it goes in a different direction with the vetiver), Knave of Hearts (blackcurrant tarts and rose), Cockaigne (the baked goods note that doesn't work on me), and Miskatonic University (Irish coffee in a library, love this one too!).  There's a fruit imp pack too, and a vanilla one, and a citrus one if you enjoy citrus.  Read the notes of the scents in the packs and see what you think.  Other GC foodies you might like include Drink Me, Shub-Niggurath (evil gingerbread), Hellcat (hazelnut, buttercream, honey mead, rum and sweet almond), Vice (chocolate, cherry and orange blossom), Halfling (porridge, kukui nuts and pastry), Sudha Segara (milk, honey and ginger), White Rabbit (spicy milky tea and linen)...

If rose seems too mature for you, you might like Alice, which is very young at heart:  Milk and honey, rose and carnation and bergamot.  Maiden is a sister scent:  white tea, carnation, rose.  Both feel youthful to me.

Do you like spices?  Booze?  Those open up whole new categories.  Baron Samedi is a take on bay rum.  Port-au-Prince: buttered rum flavored with almond, bay, clove and sassafras.  Chimera is likened by many to red-hots. Jack (pumpkin, peach & spices).  Plunder (all the spices a pirate's boat might carry). Bengal (honey & spices). Inferno (can't wear this, it burned my skin).  Kill-Devil (rum punch). Elegba (coconut, tobacco and sweet, sugared rum).  Grog, what it says.

Once you start mixing foodie elements with other components, your choices increase dramatically.  Al-Shairan: clove, peach and orange with cinnamon, patchouli and dark incense notes. Voodoo: myrrh, patchouli, vetiver, lime, vanilla, pine, almond and clove.  Eclipse, Wrath, Antikythera Mechanism, Bastet, Sin, Uruk, O, Dorian, How Doth the Little Crocodile, Tombstone, Good, Paladin, Velvet, Centzon Totochtin, Tezcatlipoca, Intrigue, Belle Epoque, Desire, Fae, Imp, Aglaea, Tamora...  Just go to the website and search a component you like, say vanilla. If you try Dragon's Milk, which is dragon's blood & vanilla, you'll find out if you like dragon's blood.  If you like apricot and try Depraved, you'll get a pretty good handle on whether you enjoy patchouli.  And so on.

Unimpables and LEs expand your horizons even more.  Just with chocolate, there's Chad, The Other Hot Chocolate, Candy Butcher, Boomslang, Wulric, Gelt, Dia de los Reyes, all the 13s,

My best advice, if you're on a budget, would be to buy a lot of $1-2 imps from the sales pages here on the forums to get a better idea of what works on you.  Most buyers will include frimps, as does the Lab -- skin test them all, even if you don't think they're your style.  You can always wash them off, but you may be pleasantly surprised (Troll...).  Then once you have a lot of GC under your belt, you can join a decant circle with more confidence.  And for me, I really enjoy not just the end result of the perfect scent, but the learning process and the opportunity to try lots and lots of different things.  But I'm a Gemini.  Have fun!  And check back in with what you like because that will really help people tailor recommendations to you.

Gourmond isn't 100% my cup of tea, but you may enjoy Halfling, Knave of Hearts (Eat Me plus roses, imho), Pink Snowballs (somewhat similar to Rose Mallow Cream, and the snow note is that creamy, near almond Snow White note)... good luck!

I know we''re a few months out from those lovely fall and winter scents, but there are usually some good fruit and food scents then, in the  Halloweenies and Yules. :)  Samhain has an apple note and Snow White has a sweet coconut scent to me. Eat Me is yummy for GC scents. The imp packs can be helpful! In June, I hope for the Lunacy blend, Strawberry Moon. Reading reviews is good, too.

I'm going to leave this link here and necrobump the thread.   I think you have officially found your tribe.  We may be quiet lately because we are probably sniffing ourselves in dark corners all Gollum like.  There have been many,  many gourmand scents released recently and it's been relatively easy to score decants on the sales threads.

Enjoy the read.  I try not to read when hungry BTW because, triggering!
