BPAL for Costume Parties, Halloween Costumes

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, a friend of mine is going to a fancy dress ball. Not really *as* Elrond, but his costume is Elrond-inspired and the pix I've seen look awesome. He doesn't normally wear scent, but I think for this occasion maybe it would tweak his interest ... so any suggestions?

I have Nero and Shadow, both of those could work - maybe something piney or woody? I also have Golden Priapus, I wear that a lot myself. Some of the things he likes are coffee, pomegranates, figs, and strong flavours in food - like prosciutto and gorgonzola.

Thanks for any help :P

ETA, for those of you who post at BUST, please don't "out" me - this is a surprise for coffeecat!

Holy *bleep.* I was JUST about to post that.

Oberon is one of my favourites... woodsy and wild without being too stubbly-manly for Elrond. It's got my vote.

As my fancy dress party at the end of the month is a LOTR related fancy dress oscar party.

That's neat if it is, if not, wow.

Oberon would make a great Elrond scent...

What about an Eowyn scent? Tthough I don't think I could order it in time, it'd be neat to know your thoughts.

I don't know what Oberon *I* must have been smelling...but all I got from it was OLDLADYORCHID OHMYGOODNESSICKYNASTY!!

Based on the scents types he likes, I wonder if he might be interested in trying Oblivion. I tried it yesterday and it was very interesting, rich, warm, and strange...appropriate for an elf king. :P

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your BPAl suggestions.

A friend of mine will be having a Roman, Greek and Egyptian themed birthday party in a couple of weeks and I've decided to go as Atia of the Julii as portrayed in the HBO/BBC series "Rome".

More important than the costume of course is the perfume. :P So... which BPAL to wear? I'm thinking it should be something quite spicy and rich and as sexy as possible. My costume is likely to be in tones of orange and gold if that's any help.

At the moment I'm leaning towards either Saw Scaled Viper, Snake Oil or possibly Shub-Niggurath.

Any thoughts? :D

TO-GA! TO-GA!

sorry, couldn't resist.

I've only tried Shub, and its lovely but perhaps a bit on the foody sweet side. Perhaps something with a strong Wine or Fig note with spices (don't know the scents well enough to know what that would be). Hmmm, here's where a Bacchus scent would be perfect.

Actually, Tum was quite nice on me, very warm and resin-y/spicy with an green olivewood note that seemed quite Mediterranian (sp?) in a warm, sultry way to me.

Of course what's sexy to some smells like toilet water to others so I may be no help at all.

Yes, that was my thought about Shub - perhaps a bit foody. I've got Gomorrah, which is full of fig and date notes and seems rather approriate for Atia; I'll add it to my shortlist. Thanks for the suggestions!

Oooh, i think Gomorrah would be perfect! I actually thought of that one after I posted. It always brings to mind temple incense of ancient times, and is unisex, and sensual enough... Mmmm, excellent choice.

Have a blast at the party, it sounds like so much fun.

Oh, how delightful! I wish my friends were costume-party type people! I may have to insist on it for my next major birthday.

I know that Atia likes food and spices, so a foody-spicy blend does make sense... but.... I'm actually inclined to think that she would go for a strong but feminine rosy floral blend, like Peacock Queen ("This is a blood red, voluptuous rose, velvet-petaled, at the height of bloom. Haughty and imperious, vain, yet incomparably lovely to the eye, but thick with thorns of jealousy, pride and hatred"). I mean... come ON. :P

If you have any of these LE blends, they also seem Atia-esque to me: Bearded Lady ("A seductive and flowing exaltation of femininity: Turkish rose, stargazer lily, violet, honeysuckle, amber, star jasmine and vanilla"), Agony of Longing, Gypsy Queen, and Svadhinaopatika.

Wow, you're right, that description is pure Atia! Unfortunately roses are one of my Notes of Death and Destruction. I like the Svadhinaopatika idea - I've been meaning to try some of the Faces of the Heroine Scents. I shall have to peruse the sales pages. :P

Thanks for the suggestions!

Ah, I love Atia. She can go from lust to spite and from sycophantic socialite to wicked politician in the blink of an eye. She is a woman who is unafraid to follow her passions and it is at once her strength and her downfall. My favorite quote from her is, "I will use your children's eyes for beads." I see her wearing something with musk, slightly exotic with spice, with a touch of fruit or flowers. Nothing too dark or heavy, but nothing too ephemeral. It's definitely something that needs to be noticed.

Madame Moriarty, Misfortune Teller (Red musk, vanilla bean, pomegranate, patchouli leaf and wild plum.)

Bastet (Luxuriant amber, warm Egyptian musk, fierce saffron and soft myrrh, almond, cardamom and golden lotus.)

Bien Loin D'ici (The Scarlet Woman, aglow with sensual indolence: red musk, benzoin, caramel accord, golden honey, and spiced Moroccan unguents.)

Bilquis (Honey, myrrh, lily of the valley, rose otto, fig leaf, almond, ambrette, red apple, and warm musk.)

Blood Kiss (Lush, creamy vanilla and the honey of the sweetest kiss smeared with the vital throb of husky clove, swollen red cherries, but darkened with the vampiric sensuality of vetiver, soporific poppy and blood red wine, and a skin-light pulse of feral musk.)

Ex Lux Fuit (golden amber, heliotrope, vanilla musk, carnation, daisy and sunflower bouquet, neroli, lemon peel, ylang ylang and honeycomb.)

Hi Kraken - oh, she's brilliant, isn't she? I'm firmly on Atia's side in the Atia/Servilia war. My personal favourite of her lines is when she was admonishing a slave: "it would serve you right to be gelded, and I'd do it if eunuchs weren't so unfashionable."

You've actually named some of my favourite BPAL blends there, so great choices! I think Bien Loin D'Ici may now be the front runner...

Scherezade is lovely :P but on me it's not quite domineering enough for Atia. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Atia rocks! I have no idea what she was truly like, but she was by far the most entertaining character in Rome for me.

The first thing that came to mind for me? The Witch Queen! She and Atia have a lot in common. And doesn't wild plum, red musk, tuberose, calla lily, heliotrope, pimento, ylang ylang and beeswax beneath a dark haze of sinister purple-hued incense smoke seem very compatible with Atia?

I'm sure it's no coincidence that most of my other ideas all are from the Diabolus category:

Hell's Belle (Oleander with wet, sweet mandarin, lush magnolia, a rush of deep musk and a touch of spice),

Horreur Sympathique (blood musk, golden honey, thick black wine, champagne grapes, tobacco flower, plum blossom, tonka bean, oakmoss, carnation, benzoin, opoponax, and sugar cane), and

Malice (Ylang ylang, clove, Indonesian red patchouli, and dark myrrh)

It's too bad that you can't wear rose... because Nemesis struck me as a very Atia-like scent too (Cypress, ginger, fig, dried rose, red patchouli, tonka bean and cyclamen).

And it could be that your first instinct may be the best. Snake Oil entices everyone, it lasts forever and has tons of throw, and to my nose it could be an ancient recipe. It's so heady and delicious, but but simple and natural at the same time.

You know that we are going to clamor for pictures of this party, right?

Witch Queen sounds wonderful, doesn't it? I'm intrigued to try something with beeswax in it! I don't have Malice or Horreur Sympathique but they're both already on my wishlist. :D

I've actually tried Nemesis and it wasn't too rosey on me - luckily the fig and ginger toned it down. I'm not that fond of cypress, though.

Oh, I think when it comes to posting pictures you'd have to bribe me with some pretty slave boys or maybe a scantily-clad Marc Antony... :P

How about Golden Priapus? After all, as Atia says, "A large penis is always welcome." :P

LOL! Now if only I could find a naked slave with a gold chain around his unmentionables to escort me to the party...

You see, there is a typo in the title. And here I was trying to think of BPAL that smells like salve :P .

:D I have been staring at this topic for days and finally decided to check it out because I couldn't figure out what kind of *salve* someone was looking for. The Columbus Jones quote in the Perfumed Ferret's signature is something that I can definitely relate to.

There is always Chintamani-Dhupa: * Chintamani-Dhupa, the "thought-mastering incense". If a little of this be used according to the ceremonies prescribed, he who employs it will make all the world submissive to him.

A fumigation for fascination! A strangely sensual blend, exotic, compelling, and commanding, adapted from an incense recipe found in the venerable sex manual, the Ananga Ranga. *

LOL, I only just realised that the title could be read as something totally different! Damn Roman greetings and their damn spellings. :D

I've just checked out the description of Chintamani-Dhupa; unfortunately I'm not too good with pine bark. Otherwise it sounds lovely!

Since Halloween is right around the corner, I thought I would bump this handy-dandy topic that I came up with by merging a couple of other threads started by members looking for recs for their costume-party fun.

If you happen upon a thread that you think would fit well with this one, please report it for me and I will see if it's a good one to merge into this. I only have two eyes and one brain, ya know, so I really appreciate your help and your suggestions.

Right now we have three different threads for character/costume situations, which seemed like logical distinctions to me. Again, please feel free to report threads that seem like they might belong in one of these general discussions and/& or PM me if you have any ideas or comments about this.

We have the thread you are reading for costume parties and such.

This thread is for recommendations for cosplay and characters in RPG.

And, this thread is for those who will be portraying a character on stage or in a similar environment and need a recommendation to help them.

(For those dramatic types, you also might want to see this thread for discussion of the best blends to help you when you need confidence on stage or when performing).

So that's your friendly modly announcement for now.

I am going to be a pirate wench for Halloween - my only problem is narrowing down my choices now that a even more piratey blends have made their way into the BPAL catalag. But I think I might break those chains and wear Storyville. :P
