And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it oh so gently! And then, when I had made an opening sufficient for my head, I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed, that no light shone out, and then I thrust in my head. Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust it in! I moved it slowly very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old mans sleep. It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed. Ha! would a madman have been so wise as this, And then, when my head was well in the room, I undid the lantern cautiously oh, so cautiously cautiously (for the hinges creaked) I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye. And this I did for seven long nights every night just at midnight but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye. And every morning, when the day broke, I went boldly into the chamber, and spoke courageously to him, calling him by name in a hearty tone, and inquiring how he has passed the night. So you see he would have been a very profound old man, indeed, to suspect that every night, just at twelve, I looked in upon him while he slept. Midnight observations and false cheer: moon-shrouded indigo musk illuminated by a thin, wavering amber light, punctuated with erratic bursts of nerolis sharp affability. This is definitely going on my list of most favorite scents ever. The amber is deep and warm, and the combination with the musk reminds me somewhat of Haunted. The musk is hard for me to describe but it's cool-toned and narcotic. I get just a little halo of floral from the neroli. It's such a beautiful and addicting scent.

Sweet and darkly warming. Testing this directly on my skin as a moisturizer. The pomegranate is sweet, velvety, and dark. The clove is very, very light. It spikes the pomegranate just enough to give it some warmth make it festive. Overall it wears pretty light on my skin and I could get away with wearing it as a moisturizer on my whole body, I thought it was going to be too overpowering. Simple and lovely.

Dead Leaves, Bourbon, Black Cherry, and an Orange Twist
puellacaerulea posted a topic in Halloweenie
[No additional description provided.] In the bottle, this is intense black cherry and bourbon. Super sweet, super boozy; can't make out the dead leaves at all. After applying, the dead leaf note amps up a lot and balances out the sweetness/booziness nicely. The orange note also comes out more, but it stays mostly in the background. After a couple hours the cherry and bourbon notes are still there, but they're much more subtle and blend well with the dead leaf note. Overall, I'd say the black cherry is the strongest note here, but the dead leaves keep it from getting into sickly sweet territory. The notes balance out in such a way that the end result is a warmer, sweeter take on the Lab's dead leaf note.- 8 replies

[No additional description provided.] In the bottle all of the above listed notes kind of smash on the nose equally. The effect is similar to a drink I'd order at a Manhattan cocktail bar that would probably cost as much as this bottle -- a spicy pineapple margarita with smoked salt. IMMEDIATELY on the skin the notes fall into rank, with the pineapple's sweetness soaring high above the others, and the dead leaves effectively blanketing the patchouli and vetiver so they're muffled to a dull roar. This is among the least "dead leaves-y" blends from the collection IMO, probably because the pineapple note takes it in a direction one doesn't associate with "autumn." Ten minutes after applying, I'm getting a sort of dead leaves reverb effect whenever I go to sniff, which suggests that note will last on the skin long after the bright, sunny pineapple has perished. Brava!

Mist-shrouded pine and moonflower creeping over flaccid opium poppies. One of the best things about this Tell-Tale Heart collection is that each of the scents really do paint a picture of the exact scenario described, covering a wide base of moods and private horrors within one person's swift descent into madness. The palette of each blend includes flashes and colors and characterizations that set it apart from the others, but they're definitely all part of the same story. I'm a sucker for a pine scent and am wild for Black Forest, so I was very curious about this one. Whereas most of the collection depicts the character's internal state, this one is a reminder of the story's setting. As such, it is a bit smoother and more calm, though the pine note reaches upward in a way that communicates the rising dread of being awake and alone late at night. That piney nerve-jangle consistently pokes through the blanket of mist and dark flower base notes. In the bottle, all I get is the pine -- not the dry scruffy pine of "This Is Our Wilderness," more like the damp juicy pine of Black Forest. Within a few minutes on the skin, the poppy and moonflower and mist have all risen to cloak the pine, just as in the description, creating a landscape where the only dominant effect is darkness. So, if you're worried about smelling like a Christmas tree, this one shouldn't be a problem for you. (That comes later, with the Yule update!) Whereas Black Forest dries down to a sweet black musk, I can tell already that I'm going to be left with a gentle whiff of opium as this evaporates.

Almighty God! no, no! They heard! they suspected! they knew! they were making a mockery of my horror! this I thought, and this I think. But anything was better than this agony! Anything was more tolerable than this derision! I could bear those hypocritical smiles no longer! I felt that I must scream or die! and now again! hark! louder! louder! louder! louder! A pulsating dragons blood and blood musk bath fizz. Vegan, handmade, cruelty-free bath bombs crafted by Dream Drop Bath Bombs. OMG FIRST? I will take the plunge (heh heh bath joke) simply because right now I'm just completely fakakakakakata verklempt over this scent! I am massively regretful that I only bought two ... I had a very good feeling about the combination of dragon's blood and blood musk fizz, but you never really know what something will smell like until you get it. I will try to describe ... it's shmexy, sensuous, ever-so-slightly sinful smelling. The musk is, indeed, somehow fizzy and bloody and the dragon's blood (which often to me smells like a lush hothouse white flower, which is not a bad thing at all) just blends with this to make it smell like ... well, a spicy hot incensey resiny boudoir that you never ever ever want to stop sniffing. This is maybe the single most truly huffable scent ever ... The bath bomb itself is GORGEOUS ... with little tiny "droplets of blood" I think on top LOL ... If you love your bath smelling sexy and sensuous and kind of the way I'd imagine Theda Bara's baignoir would have smelled, and you can get your hands on one or more of these babies (or perhaps Puddin' will consider taking this amazing scent and offering an entire line of bath goods in it ... bombs, bath oils, lotions, candles, you name it, I'll buy it!) DO NOT HESITATE ... and I promise you that if you get it and don't love it, I'll take it off your hands

Crystallized glittering shards of lightly spiced pumpkin sugar. Origin: Straight from the Lab Initial Thoughts: I love me some Pumpkin Spice Everything hair gloss, but it is STRONG. I have to be very choosy about when to wear it because it WILL make my husband sneeze. I am hoping this will be a quieter version that I can wear more often. In the Bottle: A very sweet version of pumpkin and spice. Side-by-side sniffing says there's more sugar and more vanilla in Pumpkin Sugar compared to Pumpkin Spice Everything which definitely has more of the "spice" vibe with nutmeg and cinnamon. Wet on hair: The vanilla is really coming out for me. So much so that it goes through a plasticky stage. After blowdrying: It softens back to real vanilla, sweet and gently cinnamon over the pumpkin. Verdict: This was almost exactly what I was hoping for. The scent is gentler than PSE and something I can probably wear any time I want. If you are a fan of all the pumpkin things, you should try it. I got two bottles and will probably get more in my next order.

White chocolate and marshmallow pumpkin floss! Yum! This is the lightly-spiced pumpkin floss note mixed with a light marshmallow note. As it dries, the marshmallow gets stronger and the pumpkin tones down a bit. The white chocolate comes out in the drydown. This reminds me of a past Weenie favourite, Marshmallow Pumpkin, but more subdued and with a touch more spice. The throw is somewhat light and the staying power is moderate, but it's been my experience that pumpkin scents age beautifully.

A gleaming auburn chypre shot through with streaks of pumpkin. This smells predominately like butterscotch, vetiver, and patchouli to me, with straps of gleaming black leather. It is the olfactory equivalent of drinking a tumbler of scotch neat, caramelized and raw with an aftertaste of peat. Or like eating candy in old study haunted by the ghosts of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hemingway making out on the desk. Sexy, sophisticated, gender-bending. The far dry down of Pumpkin Chypre is gorgeously huffable, but I still think it needs aging to come into its full glory. Strong throw and wear length. I received a rather startled compliment for this one, perhaps because I dont have anything else like it in my collection, but it is in roughly the same vein as other warm, brown, sultry scents such as The Antikythera Mechanism, Perversion, and The Old Goblin.

Pomegranate and maraschino cherry pumpkin floss! This one is a knockout winner for me. It almost had to be: I adore all pumpkin scents, pomegranate, and maraschino cherry. Add floss to the mix and there is almost no way it could NOT work for me. The first hit is that rich, sweet pumpkin scent I adore, with pomegranate adding a tart note. Those two notes seem to be a bit at odds at the beginning, but after it warms up for a few minutes the cherry and floss join the party and smooth everything together. Fruity, not too heavy and not too sweet. I will wear this one a lot all year around.

Sweet orange candyfloss with a hint of lemon peel and a husky breath of candy corn. Super strong throw on this one! It opens with a blast of citrus (more lemon than orange for me) with just a hint of candy corn underneath. I'm not getting much pumpkin from this, except maybe just the barest whiff of cinnamon at the edges. As it warms up, the citrus backs off a bit and I get more of the waxy candy corn. Still only a little bit of pumpkin, and I'd like a bit more for depth. Hoping the pumpkin shows up more with a bit of aging, but as a major citrus fan, this is definitely a winner for me!

Now this is the point. You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded — with what caution — with what foresight — with what dissimulation I went to work! I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him. Percolating with derangement: flashing spikes of orange blossom, neroli, lemon, and bitter clove in a bubbling mass of opoponax, patchouli, and thick, black vetiver. For now, neroli and clove are the stars of this scent, with a base of opoponax and vetiver. It's not a patchouli-heavy fragrance, though time might bring that note forward a bit more. I feel that the orange blossom and lemon make the briefest appearance when it's first applied. It's kind of cozy and appropriate for cooler weather, without a lot of throw, but it has good staying power on me. Even though there's no wood in it, I can feel the wooden floorboards that creak beneath the narrator's feet as he goes about the week before committing the murder. There's something familiar about this, maybe like a soap that I once used, and yet it doesn't actually smell at all soapy. It feels somehow more expensive than it is. I think it would suit all genders. I have to say that I don't get any impressions of madness, but maybe I'm just a little too familiar with madness to notice.

Espresso, pumpkin syrup, smoky vanilla bean, milk, raw sugar, and a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg. I always have to try anything the Post (or Lab) puts out that has coffee in it. Again, my sniffer is working at about 96%, so I will do my best. Sniffing, oh yum...I get the espresso and pumpkin first! Very rich and so good. Sprayed in my damp hair, I get all the notes right away! After a few minutes, I get the milky and smoky vanilla. The espresso and pumpkin take a back seat, but this is still so very good. If you loved this in perfume form, then get this. It is also surprisingly not heavy... present, but it stays close to me and has a low to medium throw. Again though, my nose isn't all there. But I think this is a wonderful winner!

Fermented apple juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, clove, lemon zest, butterscotch liquor, and orange slices. Oh this is good....and I am going on a nose that isn't working 100% (thanks to a cold! ) Sniffing in the bottle, it is surprisingly....light. I sniff the butterscotch....apples... orange... lemon. It is a crisp cider to my nose. In my hair. it stays the same...it has a medium scent, not too heavy as I thought it might be with the sugar, clove, allspice and nutmeg notes, but this really is....sweet, not cloying, and a tad refreshing. You can totally wear this if you work in close range with people. After a few, the apples and butterscotch are prominent. But so not cloying. I will edit/add to this as my hair dries more and my nose is a bit better. But if you are worried this would be too heavy and spicy, it so isn't!! This, to me, is a year round wearable scent.

[No additional description provided.] As a lover of violets, sugared florals, and dead leaves, I just had to get a bottle of this without sampling. It is everything I hoped it would be. A sweet floral that edges more on the sugary than the floral side with a gasp of cologny-dead leaves behind it. It's an unusual fall scent, and I think it could be worn year round, really. Another violet winner! Definitely pick it up if you think even one of the notes would appeal.

When I had waited a long time, very patiently, without hearing him lie down, I resolved to open a little a very, very little crevice in the lantern. So I opened it you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily until, at length a simple dim ray, like the thread of the spider, shot from out the crevice and fell full upon the vulture eye. It was open wide, wide open and I grew furious as I gazed upon it. I saw it with perfect distinctness all a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow in my bones; but I could see nothing else of the old mans face or person: for I had directed the ray as if by instinct, precisely upon the damned spot. A dim ray upon the vulture eye: smoked violets and bulbous orris, threads of crumbling lavender, and wet iris butter. These are still settling from the trip to me, but I just had to review. I'll change this if the scent changes when it settles down. This is an incredible violet, iris, and lavender blend. Dark and spectral at the same time. The iris and lavender blend so perfectly that while I can smell both, I can't tell where one ends and the other begins. The violet (which I assume is also orris here) gives it just a hint of sweetness, but it's a darker and smokier violet than I've encountered in any BPAL violet scent other than Bruised Violet Compound. In fact, this is like a lighter but slightly menacing version of BVC. Throw length seems to be about average on me, but my skin likes to devour oils, so ymmv. Definitely pick it up if you like any of the three notes. It showcases each of them really well.

The officers were satisfied. My manner had convinced them. I was singularly at ease. They sat, and while I answered cheerily, they chatted of familiar things. But, ere long, I felt myself getting pale and wished them gone. My head ached, and I fancied a ringing in my ears: but still they sat and still chatted. Rum cakes and black tea, blueberry scones and biscuits. On my skin, wet: Kinda sour, a little bit boozy On my skin, dry: Boozy fruity muffins After several hours: Sugary fruity muffins with a splash of booziness

With a dribble of caramel and flecks of white sugar. The Post has made yet another spectacular hair gloss with this one! It smells like fresh, caramel drizzled apple slices with a squirt of sweet crystalizzed lemon. Buying backups of this one too. ::snuggles gloss and goblins::

Pumpkin floss with threads of dark chocolate! Just got this today... also, forgive me, I am trying to get over a cold, so I might need to edit this later! But just can't wait to dive into it! In the bottle, there is a light chocolate to me, and something spicy... mildly spicy... smells a bit cinnamon-y. On skin, if you have smelled/tested Pumpkin V 2009, it reminds me of that, but more of the cinnamon coming out. It isn't overpowering, but my nose might be lying to me now. Dry down, I get more of the chocolate emerging, but it isn't crazy heavy.... it is light and the spice backs off, but still there. I don't get pumpkin from this. Doesn't last long on me...even as I am writing this, it is fading already. BUT again...might be my stuffy nose not wanting to cooperate. It is yummy and not too foody or pumpkiny.

Swirled with caramel and topped with sour cream frosting. A pumpkin I can wear! This is so delicious and not a drop of spices to make it smell like a candle. eta: There is a little bit of something that smells a little spicy as it dries down, but it doesn't really smell like cinnamon. Anyway, I decided to take one for the team and slathered it on my inner elbows directly after a bath. No reaction! I get massive painful welts from cinnamon, especially when I'm fresh from the shower, so I don't think this is cinnamon I'm detecting. I have no idea what it is though.

[No additional description provided.] Disclaimer: The bottle was *very* cold sitting out in the chilly 40's of Minnesota. In the bottle: 'Juicy' clove. Not straight up identifiable fruit, but a chewy undertone. Interesting. On me: Whoah clove! This is a strong warm spicy clove, with a slightly smokey touch (the ouhd and leaves is my guess). The fruitiness is gone. I'm a bit disappointed as I really wanted a plum heavy blend. But I'm going to let this warm up and settle for a few days, as I've had blends change after a couple of days. But I am going to try layering this with some plum heavy blends like Bordello and The Soul of La Travata. Verdict:While this (at this point) isn't the spicy plum of my dreams, this is surprisingly nostalgic inducing for me. I was a teenager in the 90's, and this is bringing me back to days of dancing at clubs and raves, when smoking indoors was legal, and my friends and I all smoked clove cigarettes. I can smell them. Hear the R&B by R. Kelly, rap by Snoop Dogg and Warren G, and grunge rock by Stone Temple Pilots and Bush. Makes me want to buy some Djarums, open a wine cooler, pop the earphones in and listen to the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet. Keeper.

Muffiny! Pumpkiny! Big oozy lumps of blueberry! I FREAKING LOVE THIS! It's just as advertised, blueberry pumpkin muffins! I get sugary sweet blueberries, just barely spiced pumpkin, and a good douse of bakery muffin smell. definitely back-up worthy, as I see myself wearing this ALOT!

Fear of Blood Crimson splatter, pulsating with blackened vetiver. On wet, I get red skin musk and almost a red wine note. The vetiver is not in your face at all. Just adds a subtle suggestion of smoke. I feel like this isn't straight up red musk but as it dries down, the muskiness comes out more. Almost goes a little powdery sweet but I don't mind that. I feel like maybe there is orris in this? Or at least something that does things similar to orris on me. That actually could be the vetiver now that I think of it. If so, than this vetiver is reminding me a lot of orris. All in all, a sweet earthy red skin musk. That's my impression. ETA - this reminds me a lot of blood pearl without the coconut

I knew what the old man felt, and pitied him, although I chuckled at heart. I knew that he had been lying awake ever since the first slight noise, when he had turned in the bed. His fears had been ever since growing upon him. He had been trying to fancy them causeless, but could not. He had been saying to himself — “It is nothing but the wind in the chimney — it is only a mouse crossing the floor,” or “It is merely a cricket which has made a single chirp.” Yes, he had been trying to comfort himself with these suppositions: but he had found all in vain. All in vain; because Death, in approaching him had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim. And it was the mournful influence of the unperceived shadow that caused him to feel — although he neither saw nor heard — to feel the presence of my head within the room. Unutterable dread: thick black patchouli, shadow musk, myrrh, and threads of hot saffron mired in sweet, viscous labdanum. Mournful Influence reminds me of Midnight Mass plus saffron (paella on Christmas Eve?). The saffron and myrrh are very pronounced with an overall vibe of dark, dusty, and slightly sweet. I believe it needs to age some; right now there is very little throw. I like this scent a lot and shall certainly wear it when striking fear into old men's hearts and chucking.

We do lie beneath the grass In the moonlight, in the shade Of the yew-tree. They that pass Hear us not. We are afraid They would envy our delight, In our graves by glow-worm night. Come follow us, and smile as we; We sail to the rock in the ancient waves, Where the snow falls by thousands into the sea, And the drownd and the shipwreckd have happy graves. Thomas Lovell Beddoes Yew berries and cypress boughs, ropes of kelp and sea spray. I haven't tried any of BPAL's other sea/themed scents, so I can't say how this stacks up to them for comparison. I tried this at New York Comic Con with no plans to make a purchase, but I ended up buying a whole bottle because I couldn't think of any BPAL scents I've tried that smelled like this! In the Bottle: saltwater. Wet: Salt and cut greens. There's an astringent quality on the edge of the salt that immediately reminded me of The Beer from the Marshwoman's Brewery -- which made sense when I looked up the notes, because they both have yew berries. Dry: The cypress comes out here, but it's wood drenched in salt water -- like standing at the edge of a dock in the winter, or being underway on an old galleon. If you've ever been to a maritime history museum which recreates historical boats and their construction, this will immediately put you in mind of that. For lack of a better word, it smells nostalgic. In Sum: A unique scent that stands out for me among all of BPAL's products that I've sniffed over the years. I would recommend it more as a room/atmospheric scent than for use on yourself, but it's immensely refreshing and bracing. If you want a little bit of the sea to keep in a bottle, this would be the scent for you.
