  1. Hello, leather lovers! I am new to BPAL. I just tested my sample of The Black Rider and I love it! It's so good. But I find myself wishing it were a little spicier (or something?), and I'm considering a blind buy of Snake Skin and/or Pleasures of the Imagination III. Is this crazy? I haven't tried Snake Oil, and that's one of my biggest hesitations. Any guidance, wise ones?

Yay! I'm just about to order The Black Rider... fingers crossed it'll work for me too :)

Working off limited data obviously but I'd say the fact you like Golden Priapus, The Black Rider and Snow White, bodes very well for you liking Snake Skin (& Snake Oil).

Haven't tried Pleasures III but it does sound like a good match for you. Some leather lovers have been having trouble with the leather in the Pleasures' though as it seems to be a new/different kind. Will come down to how that specific leather plays with your skin chem :)

Snake Skin seems to be going down the better of the two on here. Oh and if you do end up grabbing it and aren't sure at first... let it age and retest now and then. Ageing does magical things to both Snake Oil and Leather :D

  2. Does anyone know of any scents with leather similar to the one in Dead Leaves, Raw Leather, Bourbon Vanilla, and Clove? I haven't come across anything else with a raw leather note in it, but in most of the other leather scents I've tried the leather isn't very noticeable on my skin.

I'd love to know too. The leather in this smells incredible on me; all smokey, sexy and noticeably leather. The leathers in Paladin and Jareth don't show up at all on my skin (though they're in my top 10 anyway ) and something in Fighter smelled so much like hospital chemicals that I couldn't smell a thing beneath it.

Wondering if SN: Riding Crop might be worth a go.

  3.

This spring I'll be wearing the heck out of Jareth, Dorian, Little Lady Frankenstein, Embalming Fluid, and my favourite RPGs... Elf, Paladin, and Vial Of Holy Water (often all together :)). Have a feeling perfumey vanillas will see a lot of action too so Lyonesse, Liz and Pediophobia will be in the rotation.

Snap! Not tried Lyonesse - is it really in the same vein as Pediophobia?

In my brain but possibly not in reality :D Definitely in the perfumey vanilla category though. I'd say the vanilla in it is most similar to the vanilla(s) in Golden Priapus, Tombstone and Snake Oil? More vanilla than Pediophobia on me with lots of ambergris and sea moss.

I can't always wear it, because it's so... salty? but it's fricking amazing. Loads of throw too.

ETA: Looking at the reviews both Ped & Lyonesse have often been compared to Antique Lace. Alas I'll probably never get to sniff that wonderous concoction  but that looks to be the link.

  5. I love light, cool and clean scents for sleepytime; Sonnet D'Automne and Enraged Bunny Musk are top of the list but I do like TKO too. Need to find a GC alternative for the first two cause I go through my sleep scents way too quickly for LE goodness. Keep meaning to pick up some Boober for a EBM substitute.

  6. Dead Leaves and Sugared Cardamom from the 2016 weenies was gorgeous too. It took the cardamom a little while to come through properly (mine started out sweet and almost berryish for the first few weeks) but I adore it now. Gutted I missed out on getting a backup but money is a fickle mistress who must be obeyed :(

Seconding My Little Grotesque too if you can do cake.

  7. Probably strange but I actually adore Sherlock because it comes off as a fresh and clean coat or blanket to me?

It smells like clean, fuzzy linens to me! It could just be what my skin does to it, though.

I just feel really clean and like I'm wrapped in the best blanket when I wear it!

Oooh, I'll have to look into that. Loved the idea of a Sherlock scent but the notes didn't immediately grab me *heads off to scout reviews*

Boober definitely has that clean laundry feel going on maybe in a slightly more floral way. It's heavy on the linden note. I love clean scents and it's a favorite of mine. I've tried Enraged Bunny Musk and I prefer Boober to it.

I haven't tried Enraged Bunny Musk but I will always jump on an opportunity to sing Boober's praises. It's sweet and clean, and the linden blossom is so beautiful.

Excellent, thanks guys :) Will have to get me some Boober. I love linden blossom absolute so fingers crossed BPAL's linden note is similar.

I have now tried Enraged Bunny Musk, and while Boober is not fluffy it's sweeter than EBM on me.

*Opens wallet... pouts... soon my pretty, soon*

  9. I'm kind of in love with Enraged Bunny Musk; it's like snuggling up in sweet, fluffy white towels and perfect for bedtime, but it's not the easiest thing to stock up on. Just wondering if any of the lovely folks who've tried it have any recs for an alternative.

I definitely want to try Boo when it comes back around but in the meantime I've been eyeing Boober. Has anyone tried EBM & Boober? Curious about Dirty and Wensleydale too but Boober and Boo sound closer to the fluffy softness of Enraged Bunny Musk from the descriptions :)

  10. Hmm. When I look at tracking for my latest order, it's been stuck on "arrived at facility" (in LA) for a week now. Whereas my Trading Post order that shipped several days later has gone through the facility and is "enroute to destination". At what point should I get worried that my Lab package is lost somewhere in the bowels of the US Post facility?

This happened with my last order but it did suddenly start moving again after 6 days or so. Fingers crossed your tracking will spring to life again soon :)

  11. Hmmm Hunter does sound rather nice even with subtle clove... tempting. Was nervous of all the cinnamon in Plunder as I amp it to 11 but it's gotta be worth an imp. Thankyou :)

I generally try to stick my fingers in my ears on unavailable scents but The Avenue and The Imperfect Enjoyment sound amazing! Thankfully vetiver saves me selling a kidney for In His Hands Thy Cruelties Thrive because I LOVE that name. As for The Smiling Spider :thud:. Pleeeeaaase resurrect this labbies *bats eyelashes*.

  12. I'm planning to go through my collection and literally imagine licking them as I sniff from the bottle. If my brain recoils at the thought then  that scent's going in the 'wear me' pile

Okay, so I went through my bottles and there were actually quite a few that gave me that recoil reaction but the strongest were definitely:

    Lyonesse

    Dia De Los Muertos

Witch Dance (this was a reeeally strong one)

    Third Charm

Dead Leaves, Tomato Leaf & Black Pepper

Most of the snakes and Crowley gave me a mild recoil too.

  13. A timely thread for me, as I've just put back on some weight I worked hard to lose *doh*... and Christmas will no doubt pile on a few more pounds. I'm going to have to deploy some appetite suppressing scents myself, for the next couple weeks.

I've found that any strong scent which smells like it might be poisonous/toxic to eat, works well if I wear it on my hands. When I bring my hand up to eat, something in my brain says "bad idea". The first one I noticed this strongly with was The Scales Of Deprivation (Leo 2016 and Exorcist are very similar BTW). I've had a similar reaction to Elf and Sea Of Glass but YMMV.

ETA: I'm thinking Famine might work well for me based on the scent notes (plus it sounds lovely) so tempted to grab a bottle after the holidays and make it my diet scent.

  14. My favourite cloves are:

    Crimson

Dead Leaves, Raw Leather, Bourbon Vanilla & Clove

    Blood

Old Demons Of The First Class

Jack is wonderful too but not hugely clovey on me. Crimson is likely to remain my ultimate scent full stop, never mind my favourite clove, but I'm always in the market for more clove dominant scents :) There are a few unimpables I have my beady eye on right now and I'd love to get an impression on their clove quotient from fellow fanatics before risking a blind bottle. How have you guys got on with these?...

    Hunter

Looming Spectre Of Unutterable Horror (was a tempting rec for this earlier)

    Crucifixion (LiberAmoris' mention sounds promising)

I swear there was another one but my brain appears to have melted :D

  15. When I first got this it was BAM! all spices all the time. Popped it away for a few weeks and it's definitely developed.

Now I get thick, spiced, buttery, caramelised brown sugar. Can't say I get any pumpkin from it but that'll just be my skin chemistry mucking with it.

I don't think it's quite my thing but luscious for someone who likes their caramels.

  16. Wet: Big whacking hit of skittles... happy in a bottle.

Drying: Goes swiftly to citrusy sherbert.

    Dry: Er, gone?

Okay so this almost immediately pulls a vanishing act but I still love it. I use it as an instant cheer me up whenever I need it, then switch over to a regular rotation BPAL once it's gone. Must try it in a scent locket and see if the skittles stck around :)

  17. Trying to decide the next book scent to try... Have had Buggre Alle This Bible for a while and it's so promising but just turns to a cedar palooza on me. I might have to pass it on to my dad for christmas as the story will tickle him too :D

Misk U is crazy sweet, boozy coffee on me so that's a nope but there are still quite a few to choose from. Will definitely grab an imp of Dee now it's back but also tempted to try Philologus, Azriphale & Paranorman's The Book. Just wish they were impable too as fear they may turn straight up woods on me too. Has anyone else had wood amping probs with book scents?

ETA: Sorry dad, just tried layering The Buggre Alle This Bible with Scherezade and it smells like the ultimate, ancient grimoire so it's staying with me ;)

  18. I'm still in my first BPAL year so am sure there'll be some much more experienced recs to follow but here's what sprung to my little brain :D

    KezzieZ:

51 and Elf are beautiful fresh/light scents with names to appeal to one's inner fandom/sci-fi geek :D

Morocco could be wonderful for a sweeter, spicier, grown up scent.

All three are GC and impable :)

    tinyvulture:

Crimson, Witch Dance & Scherezade sprung to mind right away for you (I hope you like Red Musk :D)

While they didn't react the same way on my weirdo skin... Druid and Elf are both lovely, walk in the woods scents that you might enjoy.

And actually Dead Leaves, Raw Leather, Bourbon Vanilla & Clove might be lovely for both of you if you don't mind a soft, skin scent without throw. I adore it :)

  19. Yup this is pretty odd and also darn powerful. To my nose this is a blend of wild, herbal smelling florals (chamomile? hops? That sort of thing) it's neither sweet nor bitter, just softly white and herbal. I'd bet good money that the oils in this are of a sedative, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant nature and will be deploying this under the lavender, sleepytime BPALs when stress or insomnia strikes.

  20. On me this is very grapefruit forward, with a flutter of something like white musk, bamboo and lightly minty ozone in support. I just adore this blend; it's light and refreshing without being shallow or pulling a vanishing act after 5mins. In fact this is just what I wanted Baobhan Sith to be.

  21.

Ooooh so many yummy recs :D thankyou! Those Lupers sound stunning, will definitely keep an eye out for them (blatant newbie question... what's a DSLE Fairy?). I love me some frankincense.

Have fallen completely in love with Sonnet D'Automne recently so very eager to pick up some more when I can. Have been thinking about grabbing some All Saints from Etsy as it didn't come back this year, so great to hear a rec for that . Did grab some Dia De Los Muertos a couple months back but it was the crazy floral one (2007 I think?) so tempted to try it again if it comes back next year.

Really want to try some Cathedral when it comes back in stock, hadn't thought about In Templum Dei before though so will definitely go check out reviews. Mildly obsessed with the Crimson Peak line at the mo so will have a good look at Ghosts and A Specific Abberation. Just ordered Mother Ghost with my weenies as it sounded so different to anything in my collection and Crimson is officially my favourite BPAL now

Keep meaning to put an imp of Coyote in my orders and totally forgetting so thankyou for the reminder! I hadn't heard of Relics Of Herself or Ded Moroz but they sound absolutely beautiful!

Just tried Elf and Paladin... yup it's awesome :D Had a full bottle of Paladin sitting in my cart already but will have to slip a full Elf in there too now, curses. I really like Paladin with a dash of Dorian too if you fancy an experiment.

Thankyou so much for all the thoughtful recs guys.

dsle is the dirty south lunacy event. there's a pinned thread for it in the top section of bpal chatter and I think there are often fb pages for the individual events (???)

my dia (2015?) is indeed quite florally compared to my other bpals, and i don't normally reach for florals, but the hint of creaminess from the candy and the smokiness made it complex and comforting and intriguing to my nose. it might not be your jam!

mother ghost is stunning. one of the CP scents I reach for the most. I hope you enjoy it. and yes crimson is AMAZING.

Ah of course, thanks :) I like my dia, it's just a bit "whoa jasmine". Keep meaning to try layering it with something more incensey/smokey. Yay! A few unknown quantities in Mother Ghost for my skin but have heard such wonderful things about it, I just had to blind bottle it.

  22.

I've been really enjoying scents that read as fresh/light & incensey on me recently. I would love to know if there are any GC or recurring LE scents that have given you the same vibe :)

The Scales Of Deprivation, Paladin and Leo 2016 are three I'm really enjoying with that feel.

under the mosquito netting and the contrast are 2016 lupers. not the recurring LEs you asked for, but possibly still easy to find either second hand or from a DSLE fairy (they are both listed as being available still!) they are gorgeous scents if you love frankincense.

other recurring scents that feel to me (and I love dark dark dark stuff, so what reads as light to me might be on the darker end for others) like light with incense are weenies All Saints (incense and pretty rose), Dia de los muertos and sonnet d'automne.

cathedral and in templum dei are both light and more straight-up incense.

ghosts and a specific aberration from the crimson peak line are beautiful and delicate with a suggestion of incensey resin happenings.

you might stumble upon an old phoenix anniversary, relics of herself, which is very light in feel, very much a waft of incense smoke.

I'd say coyote is light, but not bright (aka from lemon, if that makes sense).

ded moroz was gentle amber and woods, dusted with a pretty snow note.

have you tried elf with your paladin?

Ooooh so many yummy recs :D thankyou! Those Lupers sound stunning, will definitely keep an eye out for them (blatant newbie question... what's a DSLE Fairy?). I love me some frankincense.
