    Tattie Bogle

TATTIE BOGLE Alane upon the field she stood, The tattie-bogle, tall an' prood. But certie, she wis smairt an' braw, A bonnie lass, tho' made o' straw. Her gowden hair wis made o' oo. Her dentie goon when it wis new Langsyne, hid been the guidwife's best. Sae trigly wis the bogle drest! The beasts they cam' frae a' the airts. (The tod ran tours frae furrin' pairts.) They cam' by day, they cam' by nicht, To see a maist byordnar sicht. An' craws an sparras by the score, A wale o' burds, mair nor afore. The fermer roared an' raged aboot. 'A'll cast yon tattie-bogle oot!' Pair tattie-bogle, she wis wae. 'Eh!' said the houlet, 'Whits a dae?' He flew doon frae the elder tree. 'Noo, dry yer e'en an' herk tae me. 'See, lassie, tak ma guid advice. There is nae yiss ye bein' nice. Can ye nae glower an' skreich an' a' Tae sen' thae cooardie burds awa'?' The bogle grat nae mair: instead 'A'm much obleeged tae ye,' she said 'Ma voice is lood - jist like the craik!' 'Then sing,' he said, ' for ony sake!' It chilled the verra bluid tae hear The bogle's sang : frae far an' near The burds rose up, a' frichtit sair An' nivver cam back ony mair. Sae should ye pass at skreich o' day Alang the road frae Auchenblae, An' hear a strange uncanny soun, That scares the burds for miles aroon, A soon like pincils on a sclate, Be on yer way an' dinna wait. Ye can be shair as onything Ye've heard the tattie-bogle sing. Hay, gunpowder, patchouli, autumn herbs, and sun-baked wood. In the vial, this is a very sharp, dry scent. Freshly applied, it's scorched and desolate. This scarecrow may be in a field, but it's a field that's been harvested and only has the stumps of the plants remaining, waiting to be plowed under. You know those post-apocalyptic movies where there's the obligatory scene with the main character looking out over an utter wasteland? This is the smell of that scene. As it dries, it gets slightly lighter and prettier. The herbs are coming out a little bit. Dry-down, the wood comes out and it turns into high-school wood shop, as almost always happens with wood notes on me. I just keep hoping.
  2. Obatala is soft and lovely: Obatala’s ofrenda is soft, white and pure: milk, coconut meat, shea butter and cool, refreshing water.

    Sweet Barking Cheese Room Spray

Hooray for SSDB and her kindness! This is a really wet cinnamon smell- definitely more like sucking on a red hot rather than sniffing a jar of powdered cinnamon. It's lightly sweet, but just enough to mellow it out some, not enough to make it foody. I getting the eye socket attack pretty quickly but that's probably because I keep spritzing it and then sticking my face in the little cloud and sniffing really hard. Also because of this, I can't smell anything for a while after that initial whiff so I don't have any useful comments on how the scent mellows out. I keep meaning to not do this but apparently I have the willpower of a gnat.

    Looking for something Ruby Guava?

I'm not familiar with Ruby Guava, but Machu Picchu has tropical fruits in the list of notes, and it's one of my favorite fruity scents. Despite the 'steamy blossoms' I don't notice much in the way of florals in it, just fruits and amber.

    Scents for strength and fortitude

From your bottle list, I would probably go with Bastet, as she is caring and nurturing to those she likes but woe to those she doesn't. Alternatively, is there one that you have a really good association with somehow? When I'm in tough situations I like to wear scents that remind me of a friend, like a scent-reminder that someone does have my back even if they aren't there right that second.

what is ruining these scents for me?

Definitely look for ick-notes, but don't rely *too* much on them. For me, the problem with coming up with a list of notes to avoid is that for every one of my evil-doom-stench notes, there's a bpal containing it that I love, so it really does depend on how things are blended, like kakiphony's red musk examples. It could be that musk is fine for you, and tobacco is fine for you, but musk and tobacco together isn't.
  7. I think Pumpkin Queen comes closest to it, which isn't really much help. Layering this year's #5 (Lightly spiced pumpkin pulp swirled with bourbon vanilla, French vanilla, and raw vanilla bean) with Vixen (orange blossom tainted by the beguiling scents of ginger and patchouli) might be worth a try.
  8. Les Fleurs du Mal is my favorite for this. Some people think it smells like old lady perfume but I think it smells like someone who would rip out your esophagus as soon as look at you.
  9. What about layering Vixen or Ravenous with Cathedral? Now I have to go buy this candle.

    Old books... Books, paper, libraries

That covers books back to the Victorian era but not much older - wood pulping for paper was developed in the 1840's and didn't become the book-making standard until several decades later. Older papers are lignan-free.

Why do scents turn to baby powder on me?!

Carnation is one of the more common florals used in masculine scents, and it's a spicy-powdery scent to me.

BPAL to go with "Eastern Spice" soap

That sounds gorgeous! Maybe Bengal: A sultry and unruly blend that emulates the ambient scent of the markets in ancient Bengal: skin musk with honey, peppers, clove, cinnamon bark and ginger layered with Sri Lanka: Indian sandalwood and cedar, and the dry incense smoke of olibanum, gum mastic, patchouli and myrrh?

Recommend a scent for a specific dress or outfit

Les Fleurs du Mal would be perfect.

    I want Popcorn!

There was one series of CTs that had popcorn in a lot of them, so if this one doesn't work out for you, it's worth posting an ISO.

That outfit looks like Blood Countess to me!

Milk Chocolate, Raw Ginger, and Butterscotch

Oh man, I wish I got the ginger mentioned in the other reviews. It's there, but not that strong, and is more milk chocolate. Not good milk chocolate, but the gross kind that tastes cloying and has paraffin instead of cocoa butter and says 'chocolate-flavored confection' because they can't legally call it chocolate. Finally this fades down and leaves the butterscotch. Or rather, imitation butterscotch flavor pudding, which I quit liking when I was about 3. Yech.

    Dark Chocolate, Fig, and Tamarind

I almost didn't get this, because I was suspicious of the tamarind. Was I ever wrong. When I first applied it, the tamarind stood out and made it tart and fresh, while the chocolate and fig were just strong enough to keep it sort of a dark scent overall. As it faded, the tamarind calmed down and it turned into a rich, lucious chocolate-figgy heaven. Like ladyjc said, it does fade quickly. So I'll just have to get multiple bottles.
  18. If Siren wasn't in your order, definitely get some next time! I love that lotion too, and I think Siren is by far the best match. It's less fruity, and apricot instead of orange, but still fantastic. Be warned that it smells horrible when you first put it on, let it rest a few minutes before you judge it.

    All Saints'

2010 version- almost entirely dried rose, with just enough resin to ground it a little bit. I'm really picky about roses, but I love this scent. I think it's the same rose note as in my beloved Les Fleurs du Mal. As much as I love it, though, I was hoping for a little more incense, and lo and behold, layering it with Midnight Mass makes it the exact scent I was hoping for! They're so gorgeous together that I'm going to stock up on All Saints in the hope that MM comes back for Yule.

    Archipelago Burl Wood Candle Smell-Alike?

Hmm, Ventriloquist Dummy is the woodiest scent I can think of, but it's not teaky... maybe a mix of that and Antikythera Mechanism?
  21. Thanks, raisin! I'll try to find those as well.
  22. Thanks, Little Bird! I'll find those for her.
  23. I don't care for wood or green scents at all, and that makes it hard for me to analyze them, I just go "Yuck!" and run away. I just gave my decant of Toad Hall to a friend who I'm working on enabling, and she loves it. I was hoping people who are into those types of scents could make suggestions of other things she might like. Odin is mentioned in the LE comparison thread but any other ideas would be appreciated as well! GC or less-rare LE are both fine.
  24. I second Aizen-Myoo, and would suggest getting it from the lab, and unless you're going to use it quickly, just get an imp. I bought a bottle, and after about six months it mellowed out a lot. I still like how it smells, but it's not that crisp, saucy scent it was when it was fresh.

    EPIC BPAL Spreadsheet Thread

Yeah, some are there but a lot of things in SN/announcements don't have the prices. I think I'll wait and just deal with it once I'm unemployed.
