    Minotaur

Reminds me a bit of Schwarzer Mond, but more--threatening? Instead of the 'almost sparkling' note that I get from Schwarzer Mond (is that the amber? It somehow kind of reminds me of rootbeer), this has a hardness to it. This scent is no-nonsense & unbending, but there seems to be a warmth underneath, and a tad of sweetness that has me hooked. I imagine this is what Dr. Cox from Scrubs would smell like. So glad I ordered another bottle last night.

    Milk Moon 2007

Hmmm... Don't know quite what to make of this just yet. I like it, but it seems like it could be cloying after a while. I smell the sweet, warm milk from the previous Milk Moon, but now the white grape lays atop it, super-sweet & almost effervescent. I don't know that I can pick out the fig, date, & pomegranate--perhaps the honey is morphing them, lending to the super-sweetness that I've been attributing solely to the grapes. Long story short, to me this is old milk moon sweetened waaaay the heck up.

    Monster Bait: Ventriloquist Dummy

I really didn't expect to like this much, but surprise, surprise! Mostly I get the woodiness, but this is no mere twigs-n-branches--no, this is the smooth, polished wood of a dummy who has been pain-stakingly well-cared for, even loved. Spiced wood, reminding me of Mum Moon a bit, though they really aren't all that much alike. The other notes are just there. It's like the ventriloquist had an apricot tart sitting on the kitchen counter that he was looking forward to having for breakfast, but the next morning all he found was the dirty tart dish & the dummy sitting in the corner with just a smudge of gooey goodness at the corner of his wide, silent mouth. I really, really like this, and I am so glad I picked up a bottle despit having serious doubts.

    Monster Bait: Bloody Mary

This reminds me quite a bit of Lady Macbeth. It is very red & very candy-like. Wet on my skin it is super-sexy, just like Brianne said, and I get sweet, ripe, juicy berries. After a few minutes it settles into both sweet & tart, but I don't necessarily get cherry, per se, just red candy. I like it, but doubt I'll need both bottles I purchased, so one is likely to find its way to swaps, eventually.

    Temple Viper

This actually reminds me of this incense I used to buy from Spencer's called Ancient Perfumes, if I remember correctly. I swear that stuff always cast some sort of heady spell over me; and so does Temple Viper. I am at its complete mercy, forced to bow in supplication before it, under the control of the intoxicating enchantment it has over me. The name is apt. It does start out smelling kind of like grape kool-aid, but as it dries down & the other notes emerge, the mezmerizing effect it has over me begins. It's so odd, I can't explain it. It's absolutely hypnotizing. There is something slightly sharp (?) in the blend that won't let me float completely away & I'm thinking it's the frankincense. Whatever it is, it threatens to pop the balloon in which I'm floating ever upward, but it only threatens, never follows through. Thank goodness. I want to float away on a cloud of Temple Viper forever. I'm going to need a lifetime supply. This is to be my drug of choice.

    Australian Copperhead (2006)

Oooh! this hard! I smell berries immediately. After a few minutes, it's creamy berries! No Snake Oil can I find in this blend, & honestly, I don't miss it; the 'creamy-berry' scent is so ungodly beautiful on it's own, it doesn't need any help from SO. I'm so thankful the cardamom didn't show up for me. It always ruins everything when it makes itself known. I felt kind of crummy when I woke up to a rainy day (which I usually love; go figure), but I put Austrailian Copperhead on & it brought me up right then & there. AC makes me happy, just like Drink Me. Now I have two cheery scents for blue days instead of just one. Yay! Ninety-five percent positive I'll have to snatch up another bottle before CD uproots & takes off, but thankfully I have awhile. I feel like I love this more with every sniff. It's so mellow & pretty. eta: Two hours later & here comes the amber! Or did I just miss it earlier? Either way.... I need at least another bottle of this, probably more like two. Insanely beautiful.

    Mr. Jacquel

This reminds me of Schwarzer Mond! Don't remember seeing amber listed in the ingredients, but there it is, or so it seems to me; that warm scent that almost seems to sparkle or fizzle or twinkle like stars, if that makes any sense. The kind of amber that is in the Lion, I would say. In Mr. Jacquel, though, there is something with a hard edge that seems to be trying to turn this blend into hairspray (this is where the likeness to Schwarzer Mond ends). This hairspray element teeters right on the edge--to be or not to be; it shifts between hairspray & something softer & incredibly beautiful every second, it seems. I'm rooting for the latter, of course, but Mr. Jacquel appears unable to make up his mind. Is he facing some kind of internal conflict? It seems so here. I think maybe that is the doing of the egyptian spices, based upon previous experiences. Still, I Mr. Jacquel & could easily see myself buying another bottle when this one ran out.

    Cathode

I was frimped this, & had tried it before, but it wasn't a must-get-bottle for me, so it was just "meh". But, I liked the concept, so I decided to try it again...and I think I might have to get a bottle afterall, because come summer, I can see myself reaching or this one a lot. I tend to like the way Beth's mossy notes smell on my skin, which I never would have dreamt of when I first discovered BPAL, but that's part of the glory of BPAL for me...you never know what you will discover. At first, the minty & watery notes are what's noticable on my skin & I really, really like this stage. In minutes, the mossy notes subdue the others (although they remain present in the background). It smells clean & cool & earthy, maybe a murky brownish-green if I had to describe it as a color.

    Dark Delicacies

So weird! This smells just like Niflheim once it dries down on my skin! Murky, smoky and earthy. When I first put it on, the tropical flowers are in the foreground, but it is not very long at all until they are overrun by the Niflheim element. Seeing as how I really like Niflheim, I think this will be a keeper for me.

The Saddest, most Melancholy & Wistful BPALs

Ode on Melancholy & Shroud for me. Just reading this thread makes me want to try everything that has been mentioned, even if I have already tried it before! ETA: It's been a while since I've tried it, but Asphodel, if I remember correctly, seemed sort of quiet & sad.

    Drink Me

I never would have been interested in this from the description, but when I was gifted a frimp in a recent lab order, I kept it around, because I remembered that the reviews had been pretty favorable. And I cannot believe how it has grown on me. I keep reaching for my imp. For the days I prefer something a little less foody, usually, but I love to slather this on in the evening when I am kicking around & just relaxing. It smells just like pineapple-upsidedown cake, and though I usually don't think I'll care much for fruitier scents, I really like this one. The sweetness becomes more subdued after a little while. I will definitely be tossing a bottle in my next order.

    Werewolf scents?

Under Diabolous there is Kitsune-Tsuki , which kind of fits the bill, maybe: Kitsune-Tsuki are malevolent Japanese spirits, akin to western werebeasts: women are possessed by the spirits of foxes, who compel them to perform acts of wickedness and mischief. Asian plum, orchid, daffodil, jasmine and white musk. ....and though it's not necessarily werewolf, there is Wolf's Heart under Voodoo Blends: Grants courage under extreme conditions, helps overcome fear of death, and strengthens the fortitude of artists and businessmen, enabling them to further their goals.

    Horreur Sympathique

Oh, man am I glad I got a bottle of this based on the description! It is wet, full-bodied & sweet. At first it smells a whole lot like grape koolaid on me, but soon I am getting the plum. A little later, I'm am picking up something reminiscent of Hellion beneath the grapes & plum. After a few hours it kind of all blends together in a perfumy dissonance, a sweet cacophony of unrecognizable notes. I have no idea why, but for the first few seconds after application...I get a really sexy, brazen feeling from it. Maybe it's the grapes....it just smells so....voluptuous. I actually got a rush of naughty thoughts right after I put in on, both this afternoon & again tonight. Oh well, go figure. ETA: I can really smell the honey in this. I don't know how I could have missed it before. Unfortunately it makes this too sweet, & I can't see myself wearing it very often, so off to swaps, I guess.

    Snow-Flakes

Like Absinthetics, I am strongly reminded of Snow White. Upon application there is mint too, but it is quickly subdued by the Snow White scent. It's got that same note that smells like celery to me--crisp, cool, airy. Except there's something pulling this scent down, muting it's vibrancy...a perfumey-type scent. It gives it a dark edge that SW doesn't have. Kind of odd, but if Snow White is the crisp, fresh air after a night's snow, Snow-Flakes is the landscape of The Shining or Misery; breathtakingly beautiful, but with a sense of impending something, something sinister. Hmmm, I dunno; this is the imagery I got from SF. I like it, but I think one bottle will probably do me. Now if only I could get the image of Jack Nicholson's frozen face outta my head

    The Brides of Dracula

The first time I tried this it started out as honey & spices for the most part, but after a little while faded to slightly honeyed white florals. Today when I put it on I was seriously beginning to think of swapping it--I get mostly white florals now, period, & it is reminding me quite a bit of Al-Araaf, although that's more of a pinkish scent to me, with maybe a bit more honey (a bit less aloof & more cloying). But when I got out of class & got back into my car, the whole car smelled of lingering Brides & it was soooo pretty. It smelled warm & floral. Oftentimes floral gives me a raging headache, but this scent doesn't really threaten to do so at all, and though I really don't think I slathered, I can really smell this scent on me. I don't think I'll be needing a backup bottle of this (thank goodness), but I will keep this one around. Very feminine. ETA: Seven hours later & still going strong! Not too bad in the way of staying power!

    Cockaigne

This reminds me a lot of Trick or Treat--a caramelized sugar/maple sugar type of scent. I got a kind of edge right at the outside of the sniff (though somewhat elusive) that I am thinking might be the wine. It's kind of sharp, but very subtle, & maybe a tad berryish. Fresh on my skin it smelled like syrup & pancakes, but after a few minutes it's more a burnt sugar or burnt caramel type smell. It's not bad, but I can't wear it. That's okay, though, because it's off to a very lovely forumite who I know will be able to give it a better home than I can.

    Samhain

06 version Wow! I am so glad I went with the impulse to go ahead & get this one! It is actually reminding me a lot of Hexennacht, which I love. It's got that "honeyed" note. The difference is that this one is a bit fruitier, I guess, & Hexennacht is a bit more woods, maybe? Samhain is a bit "brighter", if that makes any sense, like being near the sunlight-dappled edges of the woods as opposed to Hexennacht's clandestine-fevered-revelry-deep-in-the-woods-at-night type feel. Less sexual, more ...autumnal? ETA: Ah! Just before I clicked on "submit", I saw sookster's review below & she had the exact word I was seeking--"depth". Samhain is, to me, Hexennacht with a bit less depth.

    Count Dracula

When Order of the Dragon was first released, Count Dracula sounded really nice, but some of the notes reminded me too much of Dracul, which went horribly wrong on my skin after a few minutes. Still, after reading the reviews (CLOVE!!!), I was convinced to let the Count hop a ride along with White Moon & her entourage--and am I ever glad that I did! The first time I tried this scent, it was all clove, and as much as I love clove, it started to become a little overwhelming after awhile. I wasn't sure it was a keeper, but to be fair, I decided to give him another chance, especially since I had about nine other scents scattered about on every spare inch of arm I had. However, when I wore the Count today, it quickly morphed from pure clove into a scent I always associate with amber--at least, it is a scent that I often get in the other bpal blends I have with amber in them, so I guess I'm really just assuming it's amber. I don't know what note was the culprit, but I loved getting soft whiffs of it for a few hours until it faded to a soft, pleasant scent on my skin. Think I'll have to snatch up another bottle before he disappears for good. eta: After my next experience with the Count, it seems the amber I was getting was coming from some left-over Schwarzer Mond that I had worn the previous day. Odd, it survived the morning shower & everything! Or even more odd, perhaps it was that rare phenomena where a scent seems to sink right into your bloodstream & eminate from your very pores, even a week after you've worn it last. Dunno. Either way, the next time I wore CD, he was all clove after the drydown, clove with a hard, burnt edge. I kept one bottle & swapped away my backup; I like him enough, but it isn't true love, I think. A scent for specific days & moods, only.

    Peach, Peach Blossom, Apricot, Nectarines

If I had to choose only one fave apricot & one fave peach they would be March Hare & Fae, respectively.
  20. sixthsentinel

    Niflheim

Somber & introspective. I think of the cool stone of crypt walls. A light floral scent permeating the moist air. The flowers would be grey or light blue/white, I'm certain of it. The sky is always overcast here.

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?

In my experience, these blends have been similar in some respects, enough that wearing one immediately & often brought the other to mind. : King of Clubs --> Viola Red Lantern --> Wanda Chaste Moon --> Temperance (Tarot) Frost Moon --> The Fool (Tarot) Smut --> Scherezade
  22. I know it's an obvious choice (which makes blatantly obvious my lack of creativity), but La Petite Mort smells like sex to me. It's a little bit powdery for awhile, but after that wears off, in my experience anyway, I can definitely smell the heady scent of sex-sweaty skin &...um... afterglow, I guess?

    Glamour

Is there dragon's blood in this? I swear I am picking it up, at least for a bit after putting it on, but it's herbal, too, or....something. Vague, I know, but I still lack the skill of picking out notes so well like many of the lovlies on this board are able to do. However, after it dries down, all I get is Easter candy (and I mean this in the best way possible! ). It smells exactly like opening a bag of those Brach's marshmallow eggs, you know the kind....pink, blue, purple, white, yellow, green & orange. Every year I buy a bag then force myself to eat them because of some sweet childhood association--but they *do* smell good. But that is not the best part of this oil. Oh, no, not by a long shot. But to keep this review G-rated, I'll just say, the boy was unusually amorous last night, in a way not seen in years. He was all kisses & sweet nothings, & you'd better believe I was thanking Beth in my head the whole time....wait--that sounded creepy. Still, I am chalking this one up to the oil, because, this was seriously one for the history books. As a matter of fact, I plan on writing an erotic novel based on the experience & becoming filthy, stinking rich. Keep your eyes peeled. Yeah, big bottle purchase all the way. ETA: I wore this again & could not believe I didn't notice before how similar this smelled to Blood Rose to me!

    Chimera

The fiery, volatile scent of cinnamon, thickened by myrrh, honeysuckle, and copal. Oh.My.God. Why did I wait so long to try this?! I think "cinnamon" scared me away. I was thinking of a woody, dry cassia cinnamon scent. But this?--- Took me right back to the doughnut shop where I used to work. I would come in at 2am to fill/ice the doughnuts, & by the time I got there, the baker would already have trays upon trays of them sitting & cooling on the racks where he kept the cinnamon crunch he made for the whatchamacallits (silly name, yummy pastry ). Chimera is what the little shop would smell like when I walked in the back door. Cinnamon sugary. So good. Haven't you tried it yet? Whassa matta wit ya? I'm getting a bottle for sure.

    Springtime scents

I don't know if it's been suggested yet or not, but Temperance from the tarot collection is very pretty for spring, & I tend to be quite sensitive to a lot of florals. It has such a creamy light yellow feel to it. I wore it the other day & forgot about it--then kept thinking I smelled Chaste Moon. And it really kind of does remind me of CM without the milky note. So pretty.
