    Calico Jack

Salty and gently masculine. Almost a cologne-iness to it, which if I were reading this, would turn me off... but no, don't be scared. This is good. I like this one. A really nice surprise. My imp has been put into regular rotation. I'm not sure how this compares to the other salty scents, since I've only recently discovered that I like them. Perhaps I'll update at a later date.

    Bon Vivant

Wow, truth in description. I put it on and was immediately hit with champagne. This nails that scent perfectly. The champagne scent wafts around. It's so distinctly champagne that I feel strange wearing it this early in the morning. When I smell my wrists directly, its unmistakably strawberries. It's definitely not for me. (I'm no fan of champagne, and wearing strawberry scents make me feel about 14 yrs old again.) Even though its not my taste, this would be a good scent to recommend, because I think a lot of people would like this sort of thing. It's just too girly, too young, and too alcoholic for me. I'm washing it off... but I'll gift my imp to someone who I think will love it.

    Blood Pearl

My imp is aged.. probably a few years by now. It had initially been put in my "no" box, and clearly the aging hasn't improved things. Really thin, almost watery oil, but MASSIVE scent on the skin. It makes me think of a child's novelty perfume. I'm thinking that the orris is the problem here. There's a very thin wisp of dragon's blood-ish incense in the background but that disappears fast. Mostly it's a sweet flowery punch in the face. Nothing else-- no musk, definitely no coconut or anything creamy. I tend to not like sweet scents and this is sweet-cute-overload. It's so artificial... in actual scent, and in what it evokes. I very rarely have to wash a scent off, but I may have to if this doesn't calm the fuck down soon. EDIT-- Ok, it did calm down into a sweet cute dragon's blood vibe. The plastic went away. Still intense. Not for me.

    Mary Read

This is an imp that has been lying around forever, in my nebuluous pile of scents that I wasn't really into yet didn't want to get rid of. I was suprised to find that I've almost used up the imp! Clearly, the appeal of Mary Read grows on me slowly. I love patchouli, leather, & musk and am intruiged by gunpowder. I don't smell any of them here, though. Or rather, they're probably there silently doing their work and making the other elements behave better. I do get the "salt air and ocean mist" in droves. This is really salty. I usually do not like aquatics because they seem so cologne-y... but this one is different. I LOVE the salt element. This is great to wear on sticky humid days-- its refreshing and light, without being at all subtle or tame. I'll use up the imp and I'd be happy to have another someday. I'm also interested in giving aquatics in general a second chance, and I'll be on the lookout for anything else salty. (What timing! I just bought the trade of Cursed Pirate Girl. I'm definitely going to wear this when I read it. Images like these fit this scent perfectly.)

    Pisces 2008

This is the first LE I ever bought. I remember not liking it too much at the time. I wore it today on a total whim (I was late for work and decided that I was wearing the first thing I pulled out, no matter what) for the first time in years. I like it! A lot! I'm not sure if my tastes have changed, or if it's the aging. Like a Pisces, it's hard to pin down and full of contradictions. I cannot identify a note for the life of me. It has nice throw (not too little but not too strong, either). I get nothing typically floral or watery (two categories of scents I tend to not like). This is earthy... and earth does encompass water and plants, after all, so they're in there somewhere. Dark and rich enough for the darker seasons and moods, but yet light enough for this sunny spring day. It's not remotely foody, but I could eat this. It's nice to find a "new" scent in a dusty corner of my BPAL collection. I think I'll put Pisces into rotation. Added-- I swear I get compliments on this EVERY TIME I wear it. The years of aging have turned this into PERFECTION. Bright and earthy, deep and inviting. No notes of anything-- it is its own thing entirely. Signature scent material, here. If I had an unlimted supply I'd wear it everyday.

    Black Lily

I'm not usually a floral person, but with spring in the air I've found myself reaching for my Black Lily frimp day after day. This smells like lilies, with a touch of creaminess underneath to ground it, and a very light almost-spicy scent to darken it and tame the floral. Not a strong throw, but good enough even for someone like me who likes big heavy scents. It's not too sweet or girly or matronly. It's sophisticated but not too fancy, making it appropriate for everyday. It's perfect for this rainy spring we're having. Flowers are blooming and the air feels warm, which always cheers people up... but with day.. after day.. after day.. of rain, the days are still dark and a little melancholy. I doubt I'll buy a bottle, but I would like to replace my imp when it's gone. Eminently wearable.

    Crowley

How did I not review this yet? I've had it for a few years. At first, I didn't like it much. I just thought it smelled "red" without much complexity. I don't know if it's the oil that changed or my nose/taste changed (probably both, but especially the latter), but now I love Crowley. It smells great on my husband-- the leather comes out more on him and it smells so masculine. When I wear it the red musk is the stronger note and it smells appropriately sexy and feminine. (I used to not like red musk, but lately I've been craving it. I have no clue why, but I ain't complainin'.) I am so glad that Crowley is a GC blend so that my husband & I can both slather it with abandon.

    Gift Certificates?

I was spreading the gospel of BPAL to my friend's new girlfriend. He wanted to buy her a gift card rather than try to guess what she'd like and was really disappointed to find that BPAL doesn't sell any. I offered a list of suggested imps, but he ended up buying her something else instead because it was too complicated. I'm just sayin'. If there were gift card/certs, BPAL'd get a lot of business from well-meaning but clueless gift givers!

What do bottles and labels look like?

 Oooh, these look promising... and potentially wallet-busting! I can't wait to see more of the pretty vampires!
  10. Try him on Bow & Crown of Conquest. The leather in it is so smoothly wonderful, and there's the lavender which isn't floral at all. He also might like Black Rider. At least with those 2 you can usually either find an imp for sale on the forum, or order it from the lab. I second the recs for Bow and Crown of Conquest and Black Rider (though the opoponax & tobacco combo in Black Rider went crazy-sweet on me, I know a lot of people get a strong leather from it). I also would suggest The Red Rider. It's the GC leather blend that reminds me most of Brom Bones. I'm crazy about leather scents and that one is a strong, sexy, dark, masculine leather with a woodsy touch <3. Awesome, thanks for the suggestions. I was eyeing the Riders just after I asked. Bow & Crown was totally off my radar. I'll look into these!
  11. Any suggestions for a replacement for Brom Bones? It is about the sexiest thing ever on my husband, and he slathers himself in it regularly. (He described it as "subtle," lord help him. Brom Bones is about as subtle as a monster truck.) He won't heed my warnings about using it up too quickly. He looooves the leather in it. I've suggested Crowley, Krampus, Galvanic Goggles (all of which I already own) but he hasn't cared for them. The only other BPAL he's worn regularly was Odin, which he liked... until Brom Bones came around, and now that's all he'll touch. While, to be honest, he's not really the rugged masculine type, he clearly likes to pretend to be. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. (A GC would be great, but even a potentially-reoccuring LE would be doable.) Thanks!

    Love Me

My imp is at least a year old. When I first got it, I put it in my "stuff I don't really like, but I'm not totally sure" pile. I went back to it on a whim a few days ago... and I've been wearing it every day since. Fortunately, I don't smell any dragon's blood, which is among my least-favorite notes. My guess is that the dragon's blood is what caused me to not like it when new.. but it disappears with time. This scent ages wonderfully. Its not as complex/morphing as what I'm used to wearing, but when I smell this delicious, that's a good thing. I'm awful at pinpointing notes, but I do get something cinnamon-y (but not in a firey, red-hots, or foodie way). The throw is good, but not too strong. I like a strong scent, and I get it with Love Me without having to worry about overpowering everyone around me. This scent was a big surprise. It is excellent stuff. Yes, it is bottle-worthy when aged.

    Meskhenet, the Vulture Maiden

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet. I've had it for about a year, and while I loved it from the start, it has become one of my Top Ten Favorites. It's especially great for warmer weather when something airy and dry is appealing. Yes, light, dry, airy, feminine, strong. Meskhenet is the scent of a desert wind. (Or how I imagine the spirit of a desert wind. I've never been to a desert.) Warm and cool. Weightless and grounded. Sand and feathers. Big throw, long wearlength. Great for warm weather, or for heading into an unknown situation. Like a job interview or a party/function where you don't know anyone and aren't sure if you'll be dressed appropriately. Meskhenet's got your back.

    Quirkiest, most bizarre oils

I'm happy that I have bottles of the two weirdest BPALs I've encountered. Even if they don't get worn much, due to said weirdness: --War, which is ZOMGPEPPERSPLOSION. Beware: sniffing the bottle too closely may set your brain on fire. Or at least singe your eyebrows. --Faeu Boulanger, which I think is carbonated, and may in fact contain helium &/or neon gas. It is the smell of Smurfs.

    Fascinum

Delicious. Warm and golden. Cinnamony-but-not cinnamon. Medium/average throw, which makes this really appropriate for everyday wear. I wish it lasted longer, but oh well. You still get a few hours out of it, so no real complaints in that department. This is sexy sunshine in a bottle. Well, imp, in my case, but I'd love a bottle.
