    2013 Halloweenies!

Haha...I'm havin' some issues. My proserpine decants got here today...and so far I love two of them. And I was sort-of hoping to hate them because that's a lotta bottle. Then I just ordered decants of so below and one of the liliths, and now this update! I'm telling myself well wallet, you knew this was coming. Just give up the ghost. I ordered decants of... A WORLD WHERE THERE ARE OCTOBERS SAMHAIN 2013 ALICE IN THE PUMPKIN PATCH DORIAN IN THE PUMPKIN PATCH And I'm BACK AND FORTH on SNAKES IN THE PUMPKIN PATCH...just because snake oil is such a back-and-forth-dunno-for me. It's honestly between alice and snakes. I can't decide if alice's carnations will smell horrible with pumpkins or not. :/ (Anybody sniff it yet?)

    Dana O'Shee

Agh I'm so torn! At first the almond-cherry note scared me, but it disappears so fast and gives way to a gorgeous milk-oats-vanilla that is like a warm, soft hug. I feel very comforted by this scent, and I LOVE the smell, but... I swear it's gone completely in an hour! I don't know what I could do to make it last because it's breaking my heart that I love it so! Ahhh!

    O

This was one of my first BPAL disappointments! I ordered this earlier as a rec from people on the forums for vanilla and amber lovers. I got snake oil in the same order and LOOOOOVEEEE it, so I figured O would be the same right? Wrong. Ooooohhh so wrong. (Pun!) It smells like cherries. At this point I got afraid because I have since learned "almond" and "honey" notes smell like bad cherry syrup to my nose! (Hony Mone, O, Dragon's Milk, all of them did that!) I soldiered on and put it on anyway. YUP. Ugh! Rancid honey cherry almond! And to top it off the throw is crazy on me so it's in my face constantly. I'll give it this, after a little the honey dries down and the amber comes out to make it slightly less cloying, but still not even close to wearable for me, let alone close to sexy.

    Dorian

Omg. I had this rec'd to me as a vanilla-note and tea-note lover. I'm also a milk-note lover (have you seen my signature??? Haha.) so I had high hopes. Dorian doesn't disappoint. In the imp it smells like lemon tea, which I am all for, because hello massive tea drinker over here. On, it almost immediately goes to cream and black tea, and mmmmm the best vanilla you've ever smelled. Creamy, delicious vanilla. And for me, that's perfect. Now this and Mouse have to fight it out for what bottle I get next.

    Humpback Whale

Oh gosh. I dunno what I was expecting, buying a decant of this when I haven't tried half the notes, but it was probably this. In the imp: Uh oh, that smells astringent. Lemons tend to go lemon cleaner on me. I'm nervous. Wet: HOLY LEMONS BATMAN. I guess it's a combo of lemon cleaner with the mint, but the "bite" is really unpleasant for me. It has this earthy edge that is just grossing me out. (I suppose that might be the ambergris? I did order this blend to figure out what that smelled like, after all.) My chemistry does bad things to astringents and 'aquatics', so bear that in mind. On the dry-down, thank goodness it loses some bite. For a little bit it's sweet, probably from the myrrh, and I mind it a lot less. It's much better balanced on the dry-down. More drydown--thank goodness, now the earthy smells are killing the lemon-cleaner. It's quite pleasant now. Definitely not a bottle purchase for me, but absolutely a "cold mint" scent. Would be great for summer on the right skin, I think. A scent you probably haven't smelled before!

    Voodoo

So in the imp I got HEADY INCENSE, LIME AND A STRANGE ‘BITE’—probably vertiver. And pine too. On application—this is STRONG. Heady incense, but almost an earthly bite (pine and lime, likely) as if the wood is preparing to eat you. It’s creaky doors and alcohol, too. I definitely get almost a booze, but it feels so “deep” and complex, it’s crazy. On the dry-down it becomes spice: clove and vertiver later. It loses the almond and vanilla somewhat. But I still get the feeling of “depth”. This is a verrrrryyy “deep” smell for me. I can SEE this building. Also a lot of the BPAL reviews for Snake Oil, Lust, Dorian, O, etc, are like ‘Omg this scent is SEX. PURE SEX.’ And I was like I dunno, I’ve tried Dorian, Snake Oil, and the other scents people flip out about. Lust smelled like feet. Am I just not getting it? NOPE THIS SCENT IS SEX. THE REST ARE PLAYING AT IT, BUT THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT THE REAL SEDUCTION IS. VOODOO DOES. (It’s like Snake Oil and Dorian think they’re sexy, but they’re so vanilla voodoo is the real hardcore stuff they have never thought about.) Dry: It really dries down to a lovely, creamy vanilla pine vetiver. The throw is still insane.
  7. I have since sampled Eat Me and Hony Mone! Hony Mone went right to figgy chocolate on me and never went back. But Eat Me went to delicious creamy vanilla deliciousness without being foody, so it's actually on my bottle list now. And since trying Harlot I realize I love the rose notes the lab uses too.

    Black Lotus

After trying both this and Blood Lotus I realize the "cough syrup note" is most likely the lotus. At least I figured that one out. I can see the Bubblegum comments, too. Wet it's excruciatingly cough syrup but darker than the blood lotus. After a while the floral-resin-dark-musk smell does come out and balance the lotus, but apparently the lotus is just so nauseatingly sweet to me I can't handle it. I just smell cough syrup under flowers. :/ Of course it has crazy throw on me too.

    Blood Lotus

This went completely and utterly Robittusen cough syrup. In the imp, on my skin, dry, the same the whole way through. I'm almost amazed how much of a dead-ringer it is for cherry cough syrup. :/

    Job Interview Recommendations

This sounds fun. I haven't actually been OFFERED an interview yet ( ) but I'm trying to break into toy design/product design. What do you think would be "GET THE JOB!" scents for that?
  11. I agree with these two recommendations, and add Vasilissa: creamy skin musk and blushing pink musk with soft sandalwood, white amber, dutiful myrrh, and star jasmine. This is great because several of these suggesstions are on my list for my next imps! (Mouse, and Vasilissa especially) Glad to know I'm on the right track here. I actually did try Queen Alice--it was in my last imp order--and it became this super-sweat cherry wine smell on me. Little too boozy for me, but dried down to a nice powder. However today I'm wearing Hellcat, which is supposed to be rum/boozy, and it's dried down to a gorgeous honey-vanilla-almond-spice! Color me surprised, I might need a bottle.
  12. I'm generally a big fan of resin/amber/warm notes. I love honey, cream, and vanilla smells, and on me Alice smells creamy and amazing with carnation spice. I can tell already from my imps I'm not a fan of boozy or thick, choking incense or harsh white or linen scents. (My other favorites are the Night-Raven and Kitsune-tsuki, if it helps.) If you have good recommendations I'd love to hear them!

    Queen Alice

I really wasn't sure how this one was going to go, but Alice is my all-time favorite love everyday scent, so I wanted to try the 'older' inspired version. In the imp: WINE! WOAH! Like smelling a cherry-wine mix. Really strong. Immediately on application: Exact same as the imp. WOW THERE IS WINE MIXED WITH FRESH RED FRUIT ON MY SKIN. Really strong cider/wine combo, super huge throw, too. On the drydown the boozy smell eventually gets tempered by what I assume is the carnation and the amber notes, so after a while it actually does the same thing Alice does on me, which was interesting. (Both scents go to a powdery sweetness I really love.) Not really a fan of smelling like cherry-wine, but it's nice enough.

    Strangler Fig

I totally got this as a frimp with my imp order today, and was kind-of-intrigued. Not really a fan of figs, but eh, why not. I got a definitely almondy wiff in the imp--it reminded me a lot of Florence, another frimp I got. Tried putting it on, and it immediately gave me the VERY DISTINCT smell of chocolate-covered-nuts. On dry down it got even more intense. Straight nuts covered in chocolate. And then it began to slowly turn into peanutbutter chocolated covered M&Ms. I don't know if I have weird redhead skin chemistry, or what. It wasn't an unpleasant smell, it was just straight having skin that smells like choco-covered-almonds!
