  • Favorite Scents
So far in my limited experience: Lysander, Ultraviolet, Dee, Nocturne, The Caterpillar, Jazz Funeral, Aperotos Eros, Schwarzer Mond, Czernobog, Fetish.Goth I am discovering to my amazement that I like certain florals, especially in a dark mix. Favorites include Violet and Neroli. I am still looking for the perfect woody/earthy/herby scent. I tend to go for more masculine and musky scents.

    Faunalia

Coming back from a long hiatus just to review this incredible scent! I went to the will-call event with a list of all the limited editions I wanted to try and the goal of limiting my self to just ONE. I thought I'd have a lot of trouble deciding but Faunalia blew the rest away. I've struggled finding a good scent for the "holidays" that isn't sickly sweet or too foody, while still being spicy, warm, and festive. Faunalia manages to fit the bill perfectly. It's crisp without being bright. Golden, masculine, woodsy, and most importantly, strong. It blends on my skin very well and has a great staying power without morphing too much (it goes ever so slightly musky). Overall I'm so satisfied and predicting wearing this almost constantly through the end of the year.

    Deathrock

I love this scent to death (aha, pun!), but it takes a while for it's true beauty to flourish. When first applied, it is the true equivalent of spraying yourself with hairspray. I patiently sit through this phase, which lasts about an hour or so. Then, the chemical nature of the hairspray fades away and a gorgeous resin begins to take its place. The resin slowly (ever so slowly) gains in strength, and then the true smokey crown-jewel begins to emerge. After about 5 hours this scent is simply glorious. I recall when I first tested it at Bat's Day that I could definitely smell "cigarette smoke," but in my recent tests I can only really detect a generic smokiness (but I'm not that great at distinguishing scents yet). Unfortunately I am young enough that I can't speak to the smell of goth clubs when they allowed indoor smoking, but if it was anything like this, then I am sad that I missed it! This scent is a perfect representation of Deathrock.

    Iago

This was a very interesting scent on me! Just a forewarning, I'm pretty sure what it does on me won't happen to anyone else. In this imp this is, as others have said, pure vetiver, with a glorious edge of leather. When I first put it on, I get a lot more of the musk and leather, and it's smellin' good! Then, weirdness starts. The vetiver turns almost like cocoa, interesting. Not bad, but not necessarily what I want. Luckily, it transforms once again and becomes... BLACK TEA. I swear, I don't know what amazing body chemistry I have to make this happen, but it's good! It reminds me exactly of a black tea called "golden monkey," which has lovely cocoa undertones. In summary: leather, musk, and vetiver are some of my favorites, so of course I love this. And morphing into tea? Amazing! I will definitely be getting a bottle of this.

    Schwarzer Mond

Unsure what version I have... probably 2008.. Nope! It's 2006. Open this and I'm taken back to my incense-burning days... that lovely flavor of smoke that made me kindasorta want to try smoking (I didn't!). Everything is black and dry fragrant leaves. Very resinous and heady. I don't detect any sweetness (but I'm very bad at that) and I certainly don't get a cola/syrup scent. (Thank god!). I'm so glad I was able to track down a bottle! This is definitely one of my favorites.

    Jezirat Al Tennyn

This does wonderful magical things on my skin. In the imp, it smells like what most other people have said: earthy, a bit of zing. I personally smell a bit of a resiny note as well. The moment I put it on, everything good about this explodes! I was walking around with both wrists over my face for the first 30 minutes I had this on. I didn't detect too much morphing, other than it gaining the musky note that every perfume does for me when I wear it. Over-all, I completely love this! It is very wearable for me. I'll have to give it a few more runs before I decide if it's bottle-worthy, but I think it will prove itself.

    Faustus

An infusion of incalculable power and irresistible temptation. Truly an exercise in megalomania and self-gratification: frankincense and cinnamon, darkened by violet. I really don't understand my own reaction to this... maybe I'm actually getting the intended effect! The moment I put this on I immediately thought of how, if a guy was wearing this I'd take him on the spot. o_o There's nothing about it I can pin as really "sexy" or whatever... I just don't even. >.< Other than that vivid desire, this doesn't smell like anything special to me. I'm (obviously) not getting the negative smell a lot of others seem to be getting. I love violet and I've never tried frankincense before, and this works on me. I don't get any cinnamon though.

    Aperotos Eros

I got this as a PIF from Drarra and I am SO glad she sent it! I never would've thought to get this for myself based on the description. This is LOVELY. It reminds me very much of the general incense smell of Metaphysics/New Age stores. This is a scent that has been comforting to me since I was a child (because those places were my havens). Wearing it, I can definitely detect the fir and myrrh. All the other notes blend together to create a very nice support. The musk become a little more prominent after a while, but that is definitely not a bad thing. Over all, I love this! Thank you so much, Drarra!

    Hurricane

To me this smells wet, plain and simple. But like a black wet. A wet piece of the color black. ; I actually really like it. It doesn't morph much on my skin and remained smelling exactly as it did in the imp. Of course, when I was wearing it, a girl next to me said she kept smelling cleaning supplies and I really hope it wasn't this! To me, this is a definite favorite though. ^^

    Dracul

When I first smelled this in the imp, I thought, "meh." It was very complex, but nothing stood out to me. Then I actually tried it a few weeks later and whoa! This is actually very nice. I love the combination of the tobacco, musk, and mint. Everything complements each other. I'm a little concerned that everyone is saying this is a masculine sent--I could definitely see myself wearing this a lot. I like the bit of metallic vibe I'm getting. Over all, I could go for a bottle!

When your favorite GC blends are discontinued

Thanks for the help. I have a feeling I might end up liking Ultraviolet more, but I wont feel certain until I've tried The Coil. It's off to the sales and swaps forum for me!

When your favorite GC blends are discontinued

Thanks for the responses. I'm more wondering just how similar Ultraviolet and The Coil are. If there's not much difference, I'll be content with my Ultraviolet. If there is, I want to keep making an effort to find The Coil. Basically, if you've tried both of them, are the indistinguishable? Or what are the differences?

When your favorite GC blends are discontinued

So I was all excited to buy The Coil based on its description when BAM. Discontinued. After a few weeks of mourning I went ahead and bought Ultraviolet because it sounded similar. I have fallen in love with Ultraviolet, so now I'm wondering how similar it actually is to The Coil. Is it worth still looking for a bottle?

    The Caterpillar

When I smell this I immediately imagine burrowing deep into the ground and being surrounded by damp fragrant dirt and moss. Which is a good thing. Strangely comforting. Also makes me think of the movie Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind, but I may just be taking the "caterpillar" thing too far. I'm still a perfume noob so I can't really identify what notes make me like this so much. It may be the neroli. It is very damp and green. This scent also reminds me a bit of moth balls, which I may be a little weird because I like that. Over-all, it depends on what my family thinks, whether they can smell this and get the same positive reaction as myself. I would definitely go for a bottle!

    Voodoo

A midnight scent, evoking images of flickering golden firelight reflecting off the sheen of glistening skin and the jerking shadows of bodies suffused with spiritual ecstasy. A deep, powerful, resonant blend of myrrh, patchouli, vetiver, lime, vanilla, pine, almond and clove. I am reviewing this based on how it smelled on a friend because I would NEVER put this on my skin. Personally, I opened it and immediately was assaulted by lime. I hate lime and citrus. I seriously couldn't smell anything expect lime with rotten undertones. I offered it to my friend and was amazed to hear her say it smelled sweet and that she liked it. She put some on, and then the oddest thing happened! Less than an hour afterwards, the scent on her skin had completely morphed into musk. Pure musk. No lime or anything else in the ingredients. I actually kind of liked it then, but it was an astoundingly complete transformation. Overall, definitely not for me.

    Lysander

This is definitely one of my favorite scents that I've tried from BPAL. In the bottle it is incredibly complex. Maybe my nose is just weird, but I don't detect any of the sweetness others have mentioned, which is good because I hate sweet scents. When I put it on, it blends and morphs to something approaching mineral oil, but still with deep, dry woody tones. This is personally a really great scent, it matches me very well.
