BPAL Madness!

Leather, balsam, ambergris, and bay laurel.

Have you ever sniffed Iago and wished it had less vetiver? Then Peter Quint is your man.

In the bottle: Leather and ambergris. That's all I'm getting here.

Wet: Sharp bay laurel with an impressive throw. The leather comes out almost immediately, which is rare for me with leather scents. As it warms up and dries down, the balsam adds a richness and bay laurel adds a spiciness.

Dry: At full dry down, the balsam and leather are front-and-center with the ambergris and bay laurel drifting in and out of the background. Very mellow and together, incredibly balanced, fairly masculine.

I bought a bottle of this while it was still wet on my arm at a Will Call - by dry down I was in love. This is amazing.

Like ladymeag, I tested this at Will-Call and bought the bottle post-haste, and I REGRET NOTHING.

The notes are lovely: the ambergris is warm and musky, the leather is soft and inviting, the bay supports everything, and the balsam sweetens it up. It is seductive and warm, somewhat masculine, but not so much that it howls "THIS IS A DUDE PERFUME" across the moors. Surprisingly, it doesn't have the touch of creepy that I expected it to have, it's just beautiful, spicy, leathery, marvelous.

The progression for me was:

In-bottle: balsam and ambergris; hint of leather

Wet: Heeey leather~ 'ssup? You're pretty sexy. There's a nice ambergris shimmer here, too. The laurel and balsam are present but not excessive.

Drying: Leather mellows out some and the spiciness ramps up.

Drydown: Soft balsamic ambergris* with a soft whisper of leather.

*Ambergris, if it is present in a perfume, nearly always completely dominates the drydown on my skin.

In bottle: Lots of balsam with ambergris as a strong second. The bay and leather are interesting with the balsam and ambergris. The effect is unusual. The leather is quite soft here, the bay giving and herbal edge to the resin. Wet: More bay on the skin, moving up to being almost equal to the ambergris. The balsam’s edges soften, letting it work better with the ambergris accord. The leather comes out more and coallesses better while staying understated. Wet: This wears beautifully. The resins mellow and the leather comes into it’s own. I can’t believe how good this is.

Peter Quint sounds like a dream blend for me, but my bottle smells like bay rum and nothing else. I don't get the leather or ambergris at all, which makes me very sad.

On me, this is all masculine, spicy bay with sort of a musky, aftershave-esque quality to it.

Smells like a very warm, spicy, slightly musky type of men's cologne as it dries down.

I don't really like this on its own, but it might be nice for layering with some other scents.

I almost passed on a tester of this because leather is iffy on me. But I persevered, and wouldn't ya know, this is gorgeous! It starts with balsam and leather - smooth supple leather, not the weird chemical leather. I'm not quite sure what ambergris is (can we have SN Ambergris, please? thx!), but something lifts it from any potential dark depths. As it dries, the bay laurel comes out and rides the balsam. Yes, this leans toward masculine. And I could see where someone would smell bay rum..... Now I smell bay rum. The leather burns off (oh pooh.) and I get a slightly leathery herbal bay rum.

If I can convince the leather to stick around, this might be a bottle purchase.

In the imp: Carnations? Seriously I get carnations and leather.

On my skin wet: A deep floral spicy leather. When it dries down the leather softens.

On my skin dry: Still a spicy leather the ambergris is making the blend smell a bit salty, the carnations are still around.

A spicy unisex leather scent.

Spicy carnation leather.

Definitely soft brown leather. Actually this leather reminds me to Quincy Morris. And splash of bay rum.

Hot damn this is sexy. Unisex, skewing toward the masculine side though.

When this first goes on, I get a strong rum-like note that I really wasn't expecting! I guess it's from the bay laurel, although usually that comes out as softly spicy rather than rum-like on my skin.. so possibly it's the combination of balsam + bay laurel.

Aaaaaaanyway - that rum business goes away pretty quickly, and soon becomes a nice warm base. The leather here is quite a heavy leather - not quite warm and snuggly, and not quite black and shiny.. just somewhere in between, but I'd say brown rather than black leather. Oh ambergris - lovely, softly sweet and musky - it's the star of the show here, and with the leather it's just glorious.

I totally agree with the lovely Ms z_z up there ^^ because this really does remind me of Quincy Morris - the leather is definitely similar (if not the same) but it's the balsam + bay laurel that creates a point of difference with the herbal tones. And the soft spiciness reminds me of Spanked. Another comparison here would be Banshee Beat - this doesn't have that syrupy dark vanilla, so it's not really a BB-alike at all, but the balsam + bay laurel smells similar to the hemp component of Banshee Beat on my skin.

After about 30 minutes on my skin, Peter Quint has softened up and mellowed out quite nicely into a warm spicy leather. Like Spanked layered with Quincy Morris

I don't love this enough to buy a bottle - I pretty much have my leather needs sorted already - but if you've never had a chance to get any of BPAL's classic leather blends like Quincy Morris or Brom Bones, then Peter Quint should go on your things-to-try list

Kind of clove-like at first, then after a bit I'm getting a touch of leather of the brown leather jacket variety, though it's still mostly all about the clove or whatever smells like clove. I like this, though it's a bit too masculine for me, and I wish the leather poked out a bit more, because it is a lovely leather. I may hunt down a decant to try on a guy.

On me Peter Quint is mostly clove with a little tiny bit of leather. I really love clove, so it's wonderful. Very warm and comforting. As it dries more, I get a bit of the piney balsam. I love this scent. :wub2:

Wet, Peter Quint was spice, leather, and balsam, in a masculine, but not heavy way. Unfortunately, as it dried, it turned into powdery, powdery laundry detergent, and stayed that way. :/

I would swear there was clove in Peter Quint. There is something here that combines to smell within the same family as my beloved Velvet Bandito (anyone else here waiting impatiently for a sweet clove SN? ;)) It's spicy and dry, but I actually don't find it that masculine because it's very warm (which feels unisex to femme to me personally)

Anyway, I get mostly this clove scent and leather.. a nice soft leather, not harsh in the least (of course I love leathers any way I can get them). Which is a delightful surprise being that clove and leather are a couple of my favorite notes. The throw is not great, but that means this will be a delightful slathering scent.

Quite happy I snagged a bottle unsniffed-- thank you to my fellow reviewers, above, for leading me to this blend!

first impression: GORGEOUS, sexy, awesome, yum, where can i buy a second bottle.

i am reminded a little bit of hellhound on my trail even though reading about the notes, i learned that bay laurel is a totally different species from the bay tree used to produce bay rum. it doesn't matter, it's still amazing.

the leather here is gorgeous and soft. it is not a shiny black leather but more like soft worn brown leather. it's a little sweet, a little spicy, masculine without being super crazy manly… just gorgeous!

to think, i almost didn't buy this bottle!

Omgomgomg -- I am In.Love. I want to make out with myself, it smells so good! My scent-oriented co-worker thought there had to be pepper or fig -- there's a kind of oozy sexiness to this that belies the 'simple' four notes. I don't get leather, not really, just a warm, slightly herbacious/outdoors-y ambergris that makes me want to scream. Actually, it makes this lesbian wish there was a guy around so I could slather it on him. Gorgeous.

ITB: It's faint, but I get leather and ambergris. That combination is almost comforting, which is odd.

Wet: The bay laurel is stronger here, to the extent that I can't smell the other notes. The scent itself doesn't have a great deal of throw at all.

Dry: Now that is has dried, the balsam is the top note, then leather, which is fabulous with the rein. Finally, there is a little dryness caused by the bay laurel at the end. It would smell lovely on a man.

In the imp: Balsam and bay laurel?

Wet: This one's full of stuff I'm either unfamiliar with or that doesn't work on my skin so I have no idea what's going on. It's sweet and a little peppery.

Dry: Wow, this really reminds me of a horse stable in the best way. Sort of like sweet, damp hay, worn leather and warm animal fur, it's so strange. I'm so surprised with the leather note, it's not screaming at me and it works! I dunno how the scents in this series can contain so many notes that usually smell like absolute crap on me and make them work so beautifully.
