BPAL Madness!

Recommended Posts

All mystique and thrumming power: gurjum balsam, Sumatran dragon's blood resin, olibanum, galangal, oleo gum resin, and frankincense.

Mage smells like the inside of the big tote where I keep all my Christmas candles. 🤬

On my skin, Mage is a swirl of indistinct spices, sweet berries and fruit, with a slightly waxy but oddly "fizzy" top not (I think that's the galangal and gum resin combo at work). But the dragon's blood resin makes the scent a little darker and deeper than your average waxy christmas candle scent. I'm going to blame skin chem...and probably the galangal/gum resin. 🙃

Just got an imp of this along with a few other RPG scents. I was expecting something more distinct from the descriptions I've read here. Honestly, from bottle to dry it seemed to stay a generic perfume scent to me. Without a doubt the most basic perfume scent I've gotten from BPAL. Like discount rack at T.J. Maxx. I may just have an indiscriminate nose, but I just got a shifting mix of floral bouquets, a smattering of green herbs and a splash of something kinda aquatic. Where are the resins, musks and spices? I thought I knew what dragon's blood smelled like, but can't find it on my wrist. I expected something a bit more masculine, I think. Unfortunately it didn't last long either. About an hour after application it had almost completely faded from my wrist. While it was there it didn't have much throw either. I'm going to let it sit a few months. Maybe the warmer weather and a lil aging will awaken this bad boy.

Edit: Perused more reviews and I suppose the floral smell is the dragon's blood, and galangal the greenish note. I just assumed dragon's blood was going to smell like the musky incense I sometimes burn!

Based on the description I was expecting something much sharper, but this is very mellow and lovely. Sweetly spiced resin and incense, with not a lot of throw, but I can’t stop huffing my wrist. I can see how people are making the fall comparison, and I’m really interested in attempting to layer this one.

This is the sweetest incense- and resin-based scent I’ve come across. From looking at some of the other reviews, I suspect it’s the dragon’s blood? It’s a lot fruitier than I was expecting from the description, almost as if there’s some pineapple or other tropical fruit in the mix.

I’m not getting the balsam coming out on my skin, and am finding myself wishing for more wood and smoke.

Overall, it’s a nice scent, but not going to be my go-to for moody incense - and dragon’s blood might be getting some hesitation from me in the future.
