Astraphobia v1

Recommended Posts

Unreleased prototype, no scent description given.

Astraphobia, also known as Brontophobia, Keraunophobia, or Tonitrophobia, is an abnormal fear of thunder and lightning, a type of a specific phobia. It is quite common in humans (particularly the young), and especially dogs and cats. Ceraunophobia is specifically the fear of thunder, but not lightning.

I was expecting something with ozone but what I am getting is eucalyptus and menthol.

This has a guise of eucalyptus and it took a while for that to ease up in order to explore the rest of the blend. When that veil does lift, it's amazing! I can't quite pinpoint it, but there's a bright yet soft floral-citrus-ozone. The eucalyptus lends a "charge" to this blend, much like an approaching thunder and lightning storm just crackles with energy and tension.

Astraphobia opens up with a giant blast of menthol, which quickly burns off. There is definitely peppermint and spearmint in this blend, and I'm guessing lemon and eucalyptus. It dries to a slight lemon herbal background.

Sniffed: EUCALYPTUS, peppermint, spearmint, maybe some cucumber and/or melon? Very green and mentholic/medicinal from the eucalyptus, but slightly sweet from the mints.

Wet: VICKS! Whoa, very mentholic & sinus-clearing. More minty, too. Not getting much ozone, alas, or else I'm insensitive to it, or the eucalyptus has beaten it into submission.

Dry: The eucalyptus is definitely fading, while the mints hold. Maybe a fresh (white?) ginger note - that's what my roommate thinks, and he may be right.

Later: Eucalyptus is gone, and a slightly soapy edge has emerged. I'm vaguely reminded of some minty cleaning product. Also, I'm getting some of sort of white pepper or maybe wasabi note that's going a little dusty.

Summary: Starts out very strongly mentholic but quickly dries down to relatively faint, clean, herbal dusting of mints. It's somehow very familiar to me, like how Envy dries down, or maybe Cheshire Cat?

Wet: I totally agree, this is overwhelming eucalyptus

Drydown: It takes quite a while to settle down, and until it does the eucalyptus is in the forefront. Within an hour or so, it burns off, and I'm left with a softly sweet scent. Like a dusting of powdered sugar on my arm. I  morphers, and the transformation on this scent was especially surprising.

Wearlength was only 2-3 hours (but I didn't moisturize my skin first & we're in the middle of an extreme drought where I live, right now).

Inside the imp, eucalyptus.

Wet on my skin, eucalyptus, peppermint, and medicinal. And, yes, this will clear your sinuses in a hurry.

Dries down to a soft peppermint. If you can get past the initial blast while wet, it really does turn lovely after it fully dries.

Astraphobia v1 - In the bottle and wet on my skin, this smells like lavender and eucalyptus. It's quite strong and pungent. However, both notes burn off very quickly on my skin, and five minutes after I apply, all I smell is a very light, clean scent -- so clean it's almost soapy...but not. It's slightly floral, but I can't pinpoint what type of flower -- definitely something very subtle and soft around the edges. It's a nice scent, and perfect (after the initial blast of scent fades) for those who love soft, light, clean scents.

Holy moly, this is bracing and cooling and would be a fantastic scent for a hot sticky day! I kind of wish it would stay the way it is when it's wet -- might try it in a scent locket to see if it works out.

Wet, it's incredibly cool, brisk eucalyptus and maybe a little menthol/camphor. I love this -- it's almost an electric shock of chilly scent. Wakes you up and cools you right down.

On my skin, the eucalyptus hangs on for a while and the menthol/camphor starts to back off, and after a while it starts to gain a slightly cucumber-ish edge.

On dry-down, it becomes a little more floral, with only a little edge of eucalyptus left behind. It's a little sweet, a little herbal, and loses all of its brisk/chilly aspects. It's nice at this stage, but I really like the wet stage best.

Oooh... Nuclear Wintery.

Menthol, Eucalyptus, maybe tea tree. Very sinus clearing. I think it suits the name well, without being bitching ozoney.

Great throw at first, then mellows down and warms to the skin. Relaxing.

(I can't wait for the Phobes to be released! Quite exciting.)

Fresh on the skin this is minty and chilly. Maybe a mix of peppermint and cornmint, eucalyptus and I wouldn’t be surprised if menthol and a wee small drop of pine or fir were present as well. It actually feels cooling and slightly tingly on the skin. Well done!

After it’s been on about a ½ hour or so, it’s faded in strength and the mints have quieted down. Now eucalyptus is dominant. I don’t think this will last much longer on the skin.

Now at an hour, it’s pretty much gone, but what is left is soft and clean smelling.

This smells just like Vicks Vaporub on me at first. It's a medicinal, chilly, menthol/eucalyptus smell. As it dries down, the menthol quiets a bit and it starts to smell like spearmint gum and a hint of soap on me. It makes me feel like I've splashed mouthwash all over myself, lol. It's a clean and cool sort of scent, but it's not something I'd like to wear...

I only got a small tester of this, and that's probably all I'll ever need. There is a mouthwash/astringent/whatever in the south called Dr. Tichnor's and this smells juuuuust like it. Very mediciny and mentholy. It eventually dries down, hours later, to something slightly minty and herbal. Just not my cup of tea.

ACK IT'S ON ME GET IT OOOOOOFF is my initial reaction to applying this oil. It actually chill-burns my skin a bit, and the first whiff of it is just awful, like a high shrill scream for my sinuses. The eucalyptus is a high, lemony-sour note that makes my nose wrinkle, and it's insanely strong. I get a small amount of mint and maybe pine in the background.

As the EEK EUCALYPTUS dries down, a milder, innocuous herbal-floral note starts to emerge with that same almost-citrusy character. What is that? Lemon balm? Rose geranium? It's something lighly sweet and innocuous that reminds me of my mother - which is funny, as my mom hates lightning storms - and while I don't actually like any permutation of this scent, I keep sniffing my wrist to see what it's doing now.

I would have believed that this was a TAL blend to overcome astraphobia, actually. Wet, the oil seems to imitate cold fear; as it dries, the sharp top notes vanish and leave only a kindly warmth behind. It seems to have a medicinal, not-for-smelling-but-for-using kind of energy that fits TAL better than BPAL.

I can't imagine anyone actually wearing Astraphobia as perfume, but it's interesting - olfactory art, certainly, and worth trying for the experience alone.

A frottle from the Lab! ❤️

Ooh, that's powerful! It goes on big and loud, a burst of scent. It's eucalyptus and mint, and yes, a little medicinal - sinus-clearing! A bit cough-drop-ish. That's not necessarily a bad thing; as someone above said, it's a very bracing, wake-up, clean and cold scent. It's also very literally chilly: my arm does feel colder!

After about 20 minutes, it's quieting down somewhat: still present, but not shouting loudly anymore. It's a little more herbal now, more like crushed mint leaves are coming to the front, though the eucalyptus is still hanging around too.

It definitely evokes the chilly brisk air around a thunderstorm! Especially outside in an herb garden full of leafy mints and things. I actually kind of like it, despite the slightly medicinal hint - I feel like this would be great on a hot humid day, especially. It might also be an interesting room scent, maybe in an oil warmer, as opposed to wearing it - cooling everything down in the heat of summer.
