The Miller's Daughter

Recommended Posts

Spun gold, tear-soaked straw, and rose-infused amber.

First time posting, so be gentle with me
This one is so pretty, and doesn't seem to have as many reviews as others... I couldn't resist.
I normally would not have bought something with rose, but I really wanted to try something with the straw/hay note, and I loved the description. This is really beautiful. The rose isn't the powdery, grandmotherly scent I was afraid of, and on me at least, the rose is just a soft dusky background to the warm, salty-sweet hay. Its more of a golden warm smell than a watery one.
I'm really not usually a fan of soft, feminine scents, but this has just enough salt and metallic gold to give it a little edge and keep things interesting. I love it, and I'll be buying a full bottle :wub3:

On me, this is a very light rose with a bit of amber and straw. Sadly, this rose is not one of the ones that plays well with my skin.

Soft and pretty rose powder. I wish could love rose but no this is not for me. I was hoping for some similarity to Copper Phoenix but they have nothing in common for me.

EEEPP! Rose. Rose and more Rose. I just slathered this imp on without reading up on it first or really giving a good huff of the vial.

wet- warm (amber i'm guessing) rose. I am not friends with rose. I don't think we will ever have a good partnership.. sadly

drydown- so far really hasn't changed on me. still just amber/ rose

later- It's just pure amber now.. powdery amber. At least the rose is gone, hahaha

This one was a total fail on me. 1 out of 5 cause I do like amber just not this much.

Sigh. I've been obsessed with the "rose-infused amber" part of this description and really, really wanted this scent to work. Sadly, however, it really doesn't play nicely with my skin.

In the bottle this is a blast of rose scent, but on my skin it disappears almost immediately into a salty, metallic aquatic. I'd imagine that's the tears and gold talking. The aquatic blasts for an hour or so (strong throw) until it's overtaken by something bitter/scorched smelling... and that would be my skin doing its thing with the straw scent. (This happens to me with anything in the "grassy" family, much to my chagrin.)

What's so frustrating is that, underneath the scorched smell, I can make out the loveliness that would be the rose-infused amber. On me, it's more a soft amber with very little rose. Interestingly, I got little to no rose out of this scent the entire time I wore it. I guess it really depends on your skin chemistry!

Oh well, chalk one up to a learning experience, and I'll know to avoid hay, straw, grass, and so on in the future.

I was worried about the rose, but it was a frimp, so worth a try.

In the imp: Amber base, but with a bright thread of rose running through it. More rose than I would like, but wearable.

Wet: ROSE! What happened to my beloved amber?

Dry down all the way through several hours later: Rose. Rose. ROSE. Even after washing it off, both with soap and water and with alcohol, I still smelled it.

Overall: Even I don't normally amp rose this much. And my skin normally loves amber, amps it right up, but not this time. Enough throw my aunt could smell me in the next room, when I prefer very light throw, and nothing but rose that I'm not particularly fond of. On the right person I'm sure it would be lovely. I'm just not that person.

Amber, and a bit of hay I think in the imp? On my skin, I'm getting the hay note. Hrm.

The Millers' Daughter: this has that "rainy day in a barn" feeling to me. It does smell metallic and tangy in the bottle but when I have this on it is soft rosy amber with just a twinge of the metallic (the gold) that makes it a winner for me. My bottle is over a year old now and it has aged so nicely. The throw on this is moderate and it has long wear length, at least for me. Very evocative of the story.

an innocent, golden scent; a beautiful rose & a dusting of baby powder sifting over its petals in the golden rays of a late afternoon sun. no hay for me. :(

i love rose and so i have dozens of other bpal rose scents, and a small handful of them also do the powdery thing on me (though this one is slightly warmer & dustier than they). unfortunately, this one just isn't unique enough to warrant keeping, so it's off to a better home . . .

I like The miller's daughter because of Its smell of fresh rose, just like a rose picked up freshly from a dewy garden early in the morning. Not too green, not even metallic on my skin but dusty and sweet, really It has a reference to the wet straw.

I smelled so many rose parfumes and I find this very pleasant and long lasting.

I mostly get rose at first, with a touch of sweet aquatics and a bit of green. It's kind of sharp and sweet and not exactly my taste at first. I was about to put it in the swap pile.

However, once it starts drying, the amber comes out, and it's very lovely. Amber doesn't always smell amazing on me, but this does. The pretty rose/amber combo is what I'm left with.

I did note that this smells a lot like P.S I Love You from Bath and Body Works. I really like that one, so it figures I would like this too.

This didn't work for me at all. The rosy amber is dominant on my skin, but the tears make this scent distinctly salty and there's a metallic edge from the gold note. I can't smell the hay at all. The salt and metal notes just made this one smell sharp and odd to me at first. It does dry down to a very nice resinous amber and rose scent, but I'm just not into wearing resinous scents as perfume.

The Miller's Daughter

On: Amazing. Dry straw, but with a sweetness and warmth to it.

2 hours in: So pretty. Dry and slightly sweet. Very nice.

6.5 hours in: A bit sharper, but still pretty. Definitely dry straw and something sweet.

Overall: This is such an interesting dry/sweet scent. I really liked it a lot. Very pretty.

In imp: a sad sort of sweetness, definitely. It makes me think that it could be happy, but it's a bit cloying and heavy and a shade darker to be actually happy.

Wet on skin: mostly the same as the in imp smell, but turns very powdery on me. (Likely the amber? Being only the third scent I've tried and the first one with amber on it, I'm not yet sure yet what's happening.)

Dry: very, very powdery. The rose notes are clearly coming out now, but the powderiness is somewhat overpowering--it's a womanly sort of powdery though, not too bad. Gone after two hours.

Verdict: Not yet sold on this one, because of the powder thing, but I'll probably give it another shot later on to see if it grows on me.

sweet, like sweet grass or alfalfa flowers. I can smell the salt too. very light, close to the skin.

Sniffed: Dry, sweet and glowing.

On skin: Wet on skin, I smell a sweet yet dry, light note, slightly glowing: this must be rose-infused amber. I'm not sure what notes comprise "spun gold", but I don't smell them clearly, nor the straw. The scent becomes even drier with drydown, and I'm now getting hints of another note that may be the straw. Over time the scent develops a glowing, radiant body, that reminds me of sunlight piercing a dusty barn full of golden straw. Ultimately, The Miller's Daughter is a simple blend: all dry amber, sweetned lightly with rose, touched with straw.

Verdict: Eh, boring. The Miller's Daughter is a beautiful showcase of amber, but I need something a bit more substantial to keep my attention.

Rose and amber are great on me in nearly all incarnations, so I was devastated to come across this one only after it had sold out. However, I kept an eye out on eBay and in other places where people tend to sell/swap, and, amazingly, I found one a few months ago. The dry, herbal, sweet straw note doesn't overpower the well balanced rose and amber; it's very quickly becoming my most frequently worn BPAL scent. The Marchens so far are 3 for 3 as far as how much I love the ones I've tried!

In the imp: I'm getting salt, rose-infused amber, and some hay from the imp.

Wet: Lots of salt and rose-infused amber! I believe the rose component is a pink rose. Then the straw note emerges, but it is not as strong as the rose-infused amber, and the amber itself is starting to gain strength. I think it's a golden amber note.

Dry: This is now a primarily salty pink rose-infused amber and hay scent.

Verdict: I generally dislike the combination of rose + resins, but this one is actually nicer than I was anticipating, probably because of the use of a golden amber instead of a darker resin, along with the straw. It kind of reminds me of a saltier Jacob's Ladder, but with perhaps more rose. I don't think I'd ever reach for this, but I'm really glad I got to try it.
