Epitaph

Recommended Posts

Roses and funeral lilies perceived, faintly, through an indistinct, ghostly mist.

First on, wet: Fresh, spicy carnations - yum!

Middle drydown: Yeah, I knew that wouldn't last. Funeral home lilies and nothing but.

Far drydown: Slight scent of lilies under something slightly spicy/woody. This stage is pleasant, but faint. So, Epitaph is a no-go.

I applied this cautiously the first two times and got soft, muted roses, faint green stuff, and a whiff of very nice lily. Not much throw though, and it didn't last very long. So yesterday I decided to go for the gusto and really slather the stuff over lotion... It worked! For a few glorious hours I thoroughly enjoyed smelling like bruised mauve roses - until it turned sour. =(

I still like this and plan on finishing my imp (a little at a time). I'm not buying more though.

On wet this starts off smelling like soil to me. The rose catches up and becomes a little powdery and in addition I start getting the lilies and something faintly green. Rose is my one of my favorite notes, but this really isn't a stand out scent for me.

In the bottle - A soft rose note strangled by a screechy lily

Wet on me - The rose comes through more, but it's still a little high pitched

Dry on me - It disappears very quickly on my skin

Overall - Rose and lily are not my favourite notes so I don't mind too much that this doesn't last

In the imp: Funereal lilies.

Wet: Lily and rose.

Dry: A very light and pretty floral. Not particularly remarkable, but nice, and probably suitable for wearing to work and whatnot.

In the Imp (ITI): Wet, cold funeral flowers. I envision iris and lilies atop a nameplate in a secluded and misty cemetery. This may be an aquatic I like.

Wet: Ah, there is the rose. It’s subtle and at the very top of the scent on my skin. (Could it be that my skin amps rose)? Quickly overshadowing it are large sprays of lilies and just a hint of a watery aspect, but pleasantly so.

Dry: Slightly soapy lilies, but I’m sad the rose has faded away. I think it might be the aquatic quality that makes this one soapy on me as lilies tend to do okay on my skin.

Wet: My skin chemistry is really kind to this one. Nothing is amped or disappears.

It smells beautiful, but in a longing, mourning way.

I don't know how the lab does it, but I get the mist. The flowers smell wet and distant without smelling weak.

Something in this pulls some nostalgic strings in me, but I can't place from where.

Dry: Pretty much stays the same, though the florals both strengthen as the mist drops away.

All scent was gone completely after 3 hours. :(

Would become a staple scent for me if only it lasted longer.

Back in the day..... I used to go on (I freely admit I am a huge nerd) ghost hunts. Outside of Chicago there is the story of the Italian bride. Her grave is very grand and so is her story. Well the moment I opened the bottle of this the scent that wafted up is exactly how it smells near her grave. The whisper of rose and lily. It gave me the chills, to smell it now and to smell it on a late afternoon in the snow at a famous grave. Urgh now I want to go on a hunt.

Unfortunately, this is soap, soap, soap on me. Nothing but. Ugh. Off to the frimp/swap box for you.

This was a lab frimp with my most recent order. Holy crap am I in love with this scent!

In the imp it was kind of scary, not gonna lie. VERY strong, cloying, sweet lily with a touch of ozone and tiny pink rosebuds. It was so sweet and strong I was afraid it might give me a headache, so I applied sparingly. I need not have worried because...

Wet, it blossomed into the most gorgeous, soft scent cloud. At my wrists it was lily and a somber aquatic. At the crooks of my arms the rose was stronger, and it had some greenery to balance out the sweetness. Maybe even a touch of white musk or something else to ground it a little.

The dry down was the real magic. Nothing amped out of proportion, nor did it go soapy as some lily blends can do on me. It's a much more feminine and floral fragrance than I normally like, but wearing it I felt pretty, confident, comfortable, and just the slightest bit aloof. This is the sort of perfume I love best for curling up with a blanket and a book on a rainy afternoon. I wouldn't hesitate to wear this at work or to a formal occasion. It's versatile, classy, and stays close enough to the skin that no one is going to wonder when the funeral is when you walk into the room. If you hate florals, thpugh, give this one a pass.

Before I start this review, let me just say that I'm *really* not into florals. Every floral perfume I wear just channels old lady scent to me :/. That being said, this one is okay. The drydown is reminiscent of a floral perfume from a different company that I had a little sample vial of, and I really liked it. Unfortunately I never found out what the name of the perfume or company was :(. When Epitaph first goes on, it's way too strong and old lady for me, but the drydown is pleasant :). I'll keep my imp, but no bottle for me, and probably wont wear this that often :). 2.5/5

Origin: Ordered straight from the lab

Initial: I am a huge lover of rose scents, and this one sounded different and quite pretty, and I hadn't tried any scents with lily before this one.

In the imp: It's exactly as described, in that the florals are there, but there's this strange, mysterious mist covering them up and keeping them from coming to the fore. The rose is very faint, and I can't really smell it at all, and the scent is a little weird to my nose.

Wet: Ick.. I don't love it. There's a weird sort of aquatic note that tends to come out, and the roses are nowhere to be seen.

Drydown: It doesn't change too much, and stays really quite creepy as a scent.

Verdict: I wore this at work and it really started to creep me out - it's a creepy scent! I was alone in the office and thought I saw something else walking around haha. Overactive imagination. This is the scent that taught me lily of any kind does not like my skin. Gave it to my housemate who loves it. Probably works much better on those who can wear lily!

BPTP just kindly sent me this freebie, though it’s listed here as discontinued.

Wet on my skin, Epitaph is white, misty-powdery lilies and a hint of pale green moss. The mossy, powdery mist quality is like that in The Virgin and the Unicorn.

As Epitaph dries, its roses appear, just barely – pale roses, white or a faint pink.

This blend isn’t me, yet I like it enough to wear with pale outfits for as long as the imp lasts.

This is kind of weird on me, borderline-soapy with a chemical edge. The rose in this is very sweet and I think the lilies are what's ruining it. Half the time they're alright on me and half the time they're not--this is one of the times they're not. Hopefully I'll be able to pass this one to someone else who'll like it.

Roses and lilies are trying to duke it out in this one. It's almost a battle of the granny soaps. Which will emerge victorious? It doesn't matter because they really do just smell like different grans having a polite disagreement of the most ladylike soaps to put out for guests, and forcing each other to just sniff and see that they are right. My brain may be slightly questionable, but that's what ran through my mind. Pretty sure it's a pass for me.

It's funny, looks like most reviewers got predominantly either lily or rose. Lily, in my case. The rose -- white rose? -- is there but in the shade. I tend to amp lilies, so on me this was mainly lily through an evocative sort of ghostly veil, yet unlike most ghostly scents, this one lasted two hours, not 20 minutes. I don't wear many pure florals, but I may keep this is a nice adjunct to my lily collection. I'm so glad I got the chance to try this DC'd scent!

In the imp: Mist, lilies, and rose.

Wet: The mist and lily notes are the first to leap out at me, followed by rose. The lily and rose seem content to sort of meld together and share the stage instead of fighting with one another for dominance.

Dry: The mist note is not as prominent as it was before, and the rose has also calmed down a lot. I'm mostly getting a sweet lily scent now, backed by a bit of mist and rose. Fortunately, it never turned soapy on me at all!

Verdict: This one is nice for a straight-up floral scent, but since there are other lily scents I would reach for over this one and this is discontinued, I won't hold on to my imp.

In the imp: Hmm not sure. Faint scent. slightly watery.

On the skin wet: baby powder. Slightly soapy. don't recognize much of the florals others are describing, if anything a very faint white rose.

After dry down: not much has changed compared to wet on the skin.

Unfortunately not for me.

This is so pretty! It's a beautiful rose scent, low throw which works for me as rose goes to 11 on me. The lily it there, but not too there. A soft, floral blend that to me is white rose dominant. After more time on the skin, it's just a sn white rose. The imp will be enough, thank the gods, since it's DC and I have other rose blends that scratch the white rose itch. :)
