The Crumpet Rebellion

Recommended Posts

Mmm... not really what I had expected from Crumpet Rebellion. In the imp, it's a blast of berries in sugar syrup and not much else. I think I can detect a little butter, but I'm not sure.

Wet, it's super sweet berries and I think a little pear. The dry down is fast and the scent stays the same throughout it. It's nice, but I prefer my berries tart, like Baneberry. Not particularly strong, and the throw is dismal. I guess I can be glad I didn't fall head over heels with this baby, because what're the chances of me scoring more? Ahh well, into the swap pile.

Thank you to a very generous forum member for providing me with a sniffie of this!!!

Out of the vial: Spice cake! :yum:

Wet: Spice cake with currents and blackberries! This actually smells like something I used to wear all the time years ago. I wish I could remember what it was...it's so so familiar though.

Dry: As this dries is becomes a lot spicier. I agree with the person who said they're detecting another fruit note, like pear. I'm smelling something similar to pear as well. This is like a fruity tart with butter crust sprinkled with allspice, clove, cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg. I think there might actually even be a black tea note in here. This really invokes images of tea parties with trays stacked high with all sorts of delicious goodies.

Overall: Well, I know what all of the fuss is about now  This is drop dead delicious. I hope Beth resurrects this in the future, I'd love to wear this on a regular basis during the cooler months.

On me this smells like..... Spiced berry cake (heavy on the spiced). After a bit, the spices take over and that is all I can smell. These spices are very heavy and in your face. Kinda hurt my nose.... I am so glad that I don't love this scent due to its rarity!

Berries! Black ones, I think. Where blackcurrant usually turns to cat pee on me, this one isn't quite doing that.. however there seems to be a definite brown sugar/syrup or caramel in here, because it's all going horribly wrong right under my nose.

After about 10 minutes, I'm left with faint berries and a buttery cake smell. There's also something slightly nose-tickly in here.. cassia or cardamon or nutmeg, maybe? Not at all like crumpets - I'm a big fan of crumpets, so I know what they smell like :)

This is definitely a crumpet rebellion on my skin.. the crumpet's fighting valiantly to be found amongst the berries and butter and spices but alas.. it's not to be.

Got a partial imp of this from sunshinedaisybliss as a BPALentine; thanks so much again!

In the imp, I'm getting dark brown sugar and berries, and oh god this smells good. It's the same on my skin, and like XCDL13, barring any sudden painful turns, this may be DISOing. This ends up being a dark brown sugar and fruit scent, and just absolutely wonderful.

Fantastically foody and rich, rich, rich. First it's a burst of sticky oozing blackberry jam, and definitely some brown sugar only making it thicker and stickier. As it dries down a wonderful creamy note emerges, I'm guessing sweet clotted cream, and finally a buttery pastry that has to be the crumpet. I know crumpets on their own aren't buttery but adding butter in perfume wont add calories, so I'm all for it! So put those three elements together--sticky fruit, rich cream and buttery pastry--together and you have a total dessertgasm. I absolutely love this and because a little goes a long way, my bottle will last me a really long time!

I smell strong spicy sweet orange with a bit of creaminess. Not what I expected.

Oh my goodness! What a shocker, I expected this to be buttery and heavy on the foodie baked goods notes. Its completely the opposite!

In the imp this is very much like Diary of a lovestruck teen cannibal with less lemon, less candy and more freshly fried foodieness.

Wet on my skin this smells EXACTLY like the autumn fruit Yankee candle wax tart I burn in my room. Whats that all about?! It still has it's bakey charm, but it's loaded with fruits and do I detect a slathering of syrup?

Drying down this is still reallllly fruity. It's the ripest, juciest red and dark fruits you can imagine. It's just bursting at the seams! Fruity buttery pancakes indeed! With a shot of vodka?! Jammy fruity pancakes and vodka, I dare say!

Mostly blackberries, with a little bit of a cakey scent. On me, that's the way it starts, and that's the way it stays.

Blackberry tends to be a fairly overwhelming note on me -- it's one of those ones that's so strong that when I wear a blackberry scent, it's all I smell for 4 hours. But I do like this. I've kept my bottle ever since Convergence. Mostly I'm hanging it on to it for sentimental reasons (going to Convergence was a nice vacation), but I probably would only need about an imp or so.

Got a tester of this today, and I'm very intrigued to try the much-talked-up Crumpet Rebellion.

In Imp: Baked goods and berries! Maybe with a little honey. Sweet and extremely foody, exactly as one would expect. I didn't expect the berries however, and they're very nice.

Wet: This reminds me so heavily of Pancake Breakfast, I'm actually a little surprised. The same hint of maple syrup, the same backing berries, the same fluffy baked good quality from the crumpets. This is a little differently balanced than Pancake Breakfast, and it is really delicious. I love it for all the same reasons I love PB.

Dry: Yep, Pancake Breakfast without the butter or the extra strong maple syrup. All in all this is a really nice foody scent, exactly as I expected, edible and delicious perfection. If more comes my way I will, of course, leap at the opportunity to own it, but as such, Pancake Breakfast is a nice substitute. 5/5

This smells wonderful in the bottle. Blackberry jam and brown sugar with a hint of buttery crust. On my skin, a generic "spice" note comes out making this smell a bit like an Autumn candle. It kind of reminds me of what the Blue Pumpkin Floss proto would smell like if the cinnamon note wasn't there.

Hmm. I'm not sold on this, so I'll have to test further and possibly put up for swaps. :cry2:

Origin:

Partial 5mL bought on LJ.

Preconceived notions:

I've had the worst case of BPAL lust for The Crumpet Rebellion. Normally, I'm not a big fan of foody scents, but I've got this fantasy in my head of a dark berry (blackberry or black raspberry) version of March Hare. Whether Crumpet has any chance of living up to that fantasy remains to be seen, but that's what it would smell like if I ruled the world. ;)

First sniff:

Hmm...well, that's not quite what I had in mind. This reminds me strongly of the taste of frozen blackberries cooked into a cobbler. I know, that sounds bizarre and it's hard for me to explain. It's got a sort of slightly sour, slightly "off" smell to it that's the olfactory equivalent of the way that those berries taste. Mixed with the berries is a pie crust sort of scent. It's somewhat like the pastry note I get from March Hare (which isn't listed in the notes, but really shows up with age), but drier and less buttery.

Wet on skin:

Same as in the bottle. I feel like there's some orange zest in here, plus the dark berries (blackberries, maybe even a touch of mulberry). There's a certain sweet, citrusy zing to it that I also get from Hexahedraon v3.

Dry down:

Still the same. I was hoping that things might improve once Crumpet had a chance to work the kinks out on my skin, but it's still a slightly "off"/sour dark berry note mixed with sweet orange zest and pie crust. It's somewhat like The Knave of Hearts without the rose and with extra berry added.

The bottom line:

Not quite what I'd envisioned, but it's not bad. It just didn't fulfill the fantasy I had in my head, which happens sometimes. You get an idea in your head of what something is going to be like and then it turns out that reality doesn't quite live up to the fantasy.

I'm keeping my partial bottle (I got it for a good price and I don't regret grabbing it), but I won't need to track down any more of this one. Which is good because I'm already in love with enough HTF scents as it is. :)

OK, VERY puzzled.

When I first sniffed this bottle back in 2007, I got the cakeyness, and the berries, but was overwhelmed by the creamy, buttery notes and firmly screwed the lid back on. I really can't stand anything at all buttery, it really makes me gag.

Put the bottle away with the intention of swapping it.

Years pass! Having a clear-out, I ask my FB friends if anyone wants this bottle, but there are no takers, so I start to list it on Ebay.

Get part-way through writing my description, and decide to check the reviews here. Someone mentions Sugar Skull, so I open the bottle for another sniff, as I love Sugar Skull '07.

I sniff. Terrifyingly like Sugar Skull, but without the candied lemon peel.

After all these years, I cave in and test it on skin.

You know what? It smells like that on my skin, too. Sweet, brown-sugary spices. A hint of something rich in the background, perhaps the ghost of blackberries.

What a surprise! Waiting to see how it changes, but still liking it, ten minutes in.

Was hell-bent on selling, but now I'm not sure! Argh!

I just got to try this sucker out after long-term curiosity and found it pleasant, but not of Super Covetous BPALicorn status. If I'd been at that Convergence, I would be keeping the heck out of it because Memories, but since I wasn't...XD

Wet, it was oddly chemical, but once it dried, yep, buttery crumpets and fruity jam. It dries down like a less cakey Eat Me or, yes, Knave of Hearts minus the rose. Delightful, but I can stop eyeballing the description with heart eyes, because there are GCs that make good substitutes. :)

Can't believe I was able to get a bottle of this in a swap!! Been wanting this for a long time and almost gave up!

In bottle: I get a berry pastry. Yep, smells like a delicious crumpet.

On skin: stays close to the skin, but I get the berry note, but it is berry jam....a little less pastry and more baking spice to it, but they are soft.

Dry down: Stays the same and I really love this!! Medium throw to me, and it is foody to me. Anything berry-ish can either work for me or go completely plastic, but glad this one doesn't!! So happy!!! :wub3:

Wet: Oh wow. NOT what I was expecting. I expected pastry, but not this beautiful dark sweet/tart fruit scent. YUM. Reminds me maybe of less sweet, zingier version of Eat Me. Uh oh. I did not expect to like this this much, I just wanted to try it. I maybe in trouble here!

Dry: Luckily, this gets quite sweet and buttery on me, and I don't like it nearly as much, so I won't have to begin the impossible quest of trying to find more! It is quite nice though, I just don't love foodie scents like I used to.
