BPAL Madness!

Recommended Posts

The Goddess of Persuasion, Seduction and Sexual Wiles. A member of Aphrodite’s retinue, she is also Aphrodite’s daughter and sister to Tyche and Eunomia. Lusty myrtle and jasmine with red sandalwood, stargazer lily, and clove over an opulent, rich bed of warm musk and bourbon vanilla.

Mmmm, complex beatiful scent, totally worth the mild allergy. A bit sharp on the dry down though

Second round - not very good at first, a little chemically slightly bitter - a while later it's nicer if a little powdery, not as complex as I remember

This is very heavy lily, with a little bit of jasmine and vanilla. No spice at all. No musk. It is definitely soapy, like ultra-feminine floral soap. It stays close to skin, but it's reasonably long-wearing. I find that it layers well with more mainstream perfumes and lotions: Creed Love in White, Chanel 22, Lorenzo Villoressi Teint de Neige. BPALs that work with it: Hunger, Water of Notre Dame.I will keep some of this for layering purposes. 3 stars out of 5. 4 stars when added to other scents. This is very heavy lily, with a little bit of jasmine and vanilla. On the skin: Mostly smooth florals. Not too high pitched at all! This is a very warm scent. Makes me think I am in a flower garden. This is a very happy and girly scent! Not bad at all, but not something I would wear too often. I would rather go to L'inverno for my stargazer lily needs!

Lily, jasmine, and clove in the imp. This will probably not end well. On my skin, jasmine and lily and maybe the myrtle? Really soapy.

In The Bottle

All I can smell is jasmine :-(

On Application

Jasmine and lily. Ugh!

Dry Down

I would swear there is call lily in this blend as well. Starts off as nasty jasmine based floral (don't get me wrong, I like jasmine - on other people). I was hoping the musk and vanilla would come along and save the day but apparently they don't like jasmine either.

1.5

In the Imp: This sounds like it's going to be too floral for me, but from the imp it's actually an extremely light lemony (myrtle) musk.

Wet: Softly sweet jasmine and lily with lemons. Nothing is overly astringent or in your face; it actually kind of reminds me of a tea. Surprising, since lily is usually a note that overwhelms (and ruins) everything else for me. I think this imp is fairly aged so maybe it's calmed down over the years?

Dry: Pleasant. I'm not a floral fan so I wouldn't wear it, but I could tolerate it easily on someone else. It really is very notable how soft and sedate the florals are in this, as they're usually cloying and overly sweet. To me this is simply an agreeable, delicate citrus/floral blend.

Overall: Think I'm one of the lucky ones - if this was too crazy on you initially you may want to let it age a while and see if it softens up, because once it does it's quite nice.

This was a frimp in my last BPAL order and it's never even been on my radar. I was pleasantly surprised. I definitely get myrtle, jasmine and lily with a touch of musk in the background. I get no clove, no sandalwood and definitely no bourbon vanilla. On me, it's a nice floral but not too floral, not cloying and not sweet. Surprising as most florals are all of those and too much for me. I just wish it had better throw and lasted a bit longer. Jury's out on going for a 5 ml or not...

Imp: Spicy, floral, sweet - like an oriental perfume.

Wet: Jasmine, lily, musk and resins.

Dry: Like an oriental soap.. I guess that smells somehow like grandma to me. icon_redface.gif

I got this as a frimp with my first order. Didn't work out for me, but at least I learned something from it. Before this I had tried to convince myself that I liked jasmine. Now I can finally fess up that, while it's not terrible on me, I don't really care for it or find it that interesting. Something else of note: I tried this blind and wrote the experience down in my Day Book. I've added in which notes I think caused which aspects.

First Sniff: Jasmine. Absolutely jasmine, no other way to describe it.

Second Sniff: Still jasmine. I can't make out any other scent, but the jasmine isn't pure. It's a little obscured and softened at the edges.

Wet: Jasmine dominates but there are other notes coming through. A little menthol (I think this was the Myrtle) and some powder (that would be the musk)

Dry (30 mins): Soft powdered jasmine. (musk and jasmine)

Dry (1.5 hours): It's a bit sharper (clove), and more powdery in smell, but the strength of the perfume is faded.

Dry (3 hours): Faint. Mostly powder with a Jasmine twang.

Throw: none.

Colour association: Mauve.

Had you asked me what was in this when I tried it I would have said Jasmine and Myrrh (the other note that powders on me). I never would have guessed any of the other notes, and unfortunately they didn't have a strong enough presence on me to make this an enjoyable blend. This is off to the swaps.

Wet:

Gorgeous. Mainly floral on me, especially in the throw.

Closer to the skin you can detect the "darker" base notes, which deepen with a spicy-smooth oriental base it without ruining or overpowering the florals.

Definitely one to get a lover to nuzzle in close.

Dry: Please no. :( It's turned into a huge, cloying, headachy mess. Can't really make out any individual notes at this time. They have just morphed into a dense haze.

One for my oil burner or hair. Definitely willing to work with it to keep the wet scent. :)

This must not work well fresh on me, because I found 3 frimps in my swap box. it smelled ok in the vial, so I swiped some on.

Fresh, I get vanilla and flowers. Not bad at all. One of the flowers is jasmine, which usually hates me... but the vanilla knocks out the evilness. Lily gives it a gentle, almost soapy, quality. There is musk and sexy red sandalwood, but it's mainly vanilla with a touch of jasmine - glowing jasmine.

Wow! Age has done wonders for this. Verdict - swap one imp, save the other 2.

Imp: The Lily pops out to me very strongly, but the jasmine is obviously there as well. There is a twang of spice too, but it is very faint.

Wet: Lily and Jasmine all the way. Nothing else.

Dry (10 minutes): The lily is still the star of this show, but the sandalwood and vanilla are starting to peek through. The jasmine is just barely there. This smells very old fashion to me. Not in the sense its old, but that it takes you back in time. Its very feminine and soft.

Dry (3 hours): The smell in general has gotten a lot fainter, I'm gonna have to apply it heavier in future uses. Its now a nice, warm vanilla scent. The lily still remains hushed in the background and the musk is appearing slightly; but you wouldn't know it if you didn't have foreknowledge of it being in the ingredients. I'm really loving this scent!

Dry (5 hours): Scent is pretty much gone. I can still get some of the floral tones if I put my nose on my wrist, but its pretty much done for the day.

Consensus: This is less Greek Goddess and more Importance of Being Earnest. If Gwendolen Fairfax was summed up in a perfume, it would be this. I think I may need to get a bottle of Peitho....

In the imp: Soft amber herbal floral. Well, I don't know what myrtle smells like, but I can smell the jasmine.

Wet on skin: Almost a jasmine one-note on my skin. It's very pretty, but I hope some of the other notes are going to come out to play soon.

Dried down: Mmmmm...... Jasmine and bourbon vanilla, jasmine on my wrist, and vanilla on the throw.

Throw: Vanilla-y bourbon vanilla. Mmmmmmmm.............

Verdict: ***** I may have to get me some of this.

PEITHO

Blind tested two days ago but bumped to the head of the review queue because it's on the March cull list. This frimp is one of a rediscovered stash from Will Call last April so it is aged at least ten months. The oil is yellow.

In Vitro Bright floral; plumeria?

Wet A strong white floral with some throw when freshly applied. Not plumeria, sadly.

Drying Fifteen minutes on this was still a sweet floral but with an additional sour note. As the scent faded over the next hour, the sour note became equally strong and then receded leaving the floral only.

If nothing else this test suggested that jasmine and/or stargazer lily are notes for me to avoid because boy howdy, they stomped over everything. Peitho was vaguely pleasant but I would have preferred to smell the other components in this blend.

I get pretty much nothing but jasmine here (not even my pal clove, where are you?!). It's the sort of stinky jasmine too-- like is in Melisade and Dia De Los Muertos, and that's coming from a jasmine lover. I was hoping for some musk and clove, but I cant find them. This could be a gorgeous and complex scent I think.. I dont know if it's my skin, or something lacking in its blending, that is making it fall short in my opinion.

  • ITI: That is some strong jasmine right there. granted the lily white well and toned down the over quality of the jasmine whereas the sandalwood adds a nice, subtle tone as a whole. It's strong but I think its okay so far.

Wet: The jasmine at this point is almost overwhelming, like industrial bathroom sanitizer. As it starts to settle I get a bit more lily but it's just too much.

Dry: It reminds me of a lily and said jasmine Glade plugin. To the swap pile it goes.

Oh, lusty, heady florals right off in this one. Ah, yes, that would be jasmine and lily with myrtle. Considering that this has a lot of my death notes, overall it's not too bad. The clove is barely noticeable on me and it softens a bit into a mostly sophisticated floral scent.

I got this with a load of imps recently from a forumite. I have no idea how old my imp is, but I find Peitho lovely.

On me, it is a soft, silvery floral with a similar vibe as The Phantom Wooer. It makes me think of a clandestine twilight garden.

I pick up mostly lily (softer and less perfumey than the white variety), musk, and mellow sandalwood in the background. The jasmine is soft and just adds some depth to the lily. I get some vanilla in dry down, but it reads more as just sweetness.

I don't know if it's b/c my imp is aged or if this just works with my chemistry, jasmine and sandalwood both like me, but I really like this. It isn't soapy on me, and its very calming. A shame it's discontinued. :-(

All these notes are lovely on me, except Jasmine. Oh jasmine. I keep trying though....

Wet: Cat pee. But the jasmine is settling and receding a bit...maybe it'll be ok?

Dry: Not ok. So much jasmine, it's all I can smell. Another jasmine fail! How is it that it ALWAYS overpowers all other notes?? I smell nothing else.

This was my only DISO. Found and purchased a blue bottle from forums 8/2017. Not as luscious and jasmine-y as the bottle I had before it was discontinued. Has gone kind of flat and dusty with hardly any jasmine, so this was definitely not a blend that aged better. When fresh (or at least younger than this) Peitho smells like the perfect Easter church flowers and made everything feel like spring. It smells more like a funeral now—but if that's what you're looking for, it's perfect! I may end up tossing this one. Whomp whomp.

I get mostly jasmine from my imp. There is a little lily and a touch of vanilla, but for me it's almost entirely a full-time jasmine scent. I was hoping some of the clove might have stuck around, or any of the other warmer scents, but it's a straight floral. it's not bad, but I think it would get more love in a different home.

I was enthusiastic about all of these notes except for jasmine, so of course Peitho is practically a single-note jasmine on me. It's a nice jasmine, not indolic, and with the vanilla in the background reminds me rather of La Prostitution et la Folie, which I tested a couple of days ago. Actually, it's a surprisingly beautiful jasmine; it's just not something I'm going to wear.

In the imp: I’m getting jasmine, what I think is the myrtle, a bit of red sandalwood, and a soft, bourbon vanilla.

Wet: The floral notes are the most prominent, backed by the warm musk and a light bourbon vanilla. I’m not getting any of the red sandalwood or clove on my skin.

Dry: Musk and florals, with the jasmine being particularly prominent on my skin. Just a breath of vanilla, only a hint of clove, and some faint sandalwood far in the background.

Verdict: I really wish the floral notes and musk in this let the vanilla, clove, and sandalwood shine more. Alas! I’m glad I was able to try it, though!
